    Great insights, but Hitler and NSDAP were the result of the treaty of Versailles, humilating Germany, especially rel.to Russia, which lost the war against Gemany, but Versailles took away the German eastern territories. Furthermore the coup d'etat of the abdication of Wilhelm II amid a ceasefire created the Dolchstoßlegende, as Germany never surrendered

    • @michaelfreiherr
      @michaelfreiherr 21 день тому

      At least the perception of Versailles had a big impact on Germany. However, every party opposed Versaille, some just as strong as the NSDAP. So this alone cannot be the explanation for the rise of the Nazis. The point about the Dolckstoßlegende is a good one! I never considered that the Socialist's eagerness for revolution played a big role in that.

      @michaelfreiherr In one of the surveys done after the war in 1950 of 1000 people as to what they believed was the main reason why Hitler got into power. Less than 9% of the surveyed Germans answered with the Treaty of Versailles and "national humiliation" being the main reason. While 32% claimed that the main reason was unemployment and the economic crisis, 28% claimed that the "good will toward the people" and their party programme was the main reason.

    Der Aufstieg der DAP (NSDAP), ist die Folge des "Versailler Diktats", Also das Ziel der Westaliirten (USA, GB und Frankreich) Deutschland auszupressen und wirtschaftlich zu zerstören. Deshalb kam Deutschland nach dem 1. Weltkrieg, während der "Weimarer Republik" nie auf die Beine. Ohne "Versailler Diktat", wären die Nazis nie an die Macht gekommen und die Geschichte wäre ganz anders verlaufen (einschließlich der Judenverfolgung), so einfach ist das.

    • @michaelfreiherr
      @michaelfreiherr 21 день тому

      Diese Beschreibung in ihrer Einfachheit bezweifle ich sehr stark. Natürlich spielt Versailles eine Rolle, doch ist es alleine nicht ausreichend. Jede andere Partei hatte ein Problem mit dem Vertrag, manche nicht weniger als die Nazis. Außerdem habe ich auch Quellen gehört, dass Versailles und die nachfolgenden Anpassungen eigentlich relativ lax waren, aber dazu muss ich mir erst noch ein Bild machen.

    I believe that the National Socialists just had the luck of calling exactly for what the average German wanted at the time. Socialism, but not Bolshevism, Security and Stabilty rather than fragile Democracy, and Nationalism. As even the Social Democrats supported their nation in the First World War. I think it's mistaken, as is often done, to see this as mere propaganda and lies. In my opinion people just felt, especially with the great depression ravaging Germany, that the National Socialists were correct in their assessments. The National Socialists must have felt validated too by the crisis. As it ultimately was an international banking crisis. They were of course wrong, but that knowledge would require hindsight. This would also explain the sudden rise in popularity from 1929 onward.

    • @michaelfreiherr
      @michaelfreiherr 21 день тому

      Locally, the rise started before the crisis of 1929. So it was not a purely economic issue. There must have been some cultural shift. Falter hints at something like that but provides no details our sources whatsoever. There definitely a general trend towards socialism, furthered by the war, on the one hand but also being afraid of full blown communism.

    • @celestialoof6346
      @celestialoof6346 21 день тому

      @michaelfreiherr When approximately did the National Socialists start to gain support locally? It surely must have been after 1928, since in the election they only got 2,6%, the lowest of their election turnouts. My guess is that they were widely known previously despite their relatively small size but then the Depression made people turn to them in 1930.

And I appreciate very much that you allow people who don't speak German (like me) to get a peek into them. 2) You go for the juicy nitty-gritty details, demonstrating policies these parties actually stand for and what they did, instead of hiding behind vague nonsense. Even if it's not all the details that there are (and I don't think that anyone watches a 30-min believes it's all there is) it's still much more than I can learn anywhere for free - a dish that the world could use much more of. Sorry for answering so late. I didn't get any notification about your comment. I have not read anything about "holding the families hostage". The only thing that comes close to that is that if one soldier deserted, a relative would be drafted in his place. If there was none, someone from the soldier's village would be forced into the military. Often, a son of the mayor would be on top of the list to motivate the local dignitaries to recapture the escapee if he tried to return home. Of course, this only worked during the conscripting and training phase. I do not think, there was much pressure on the families when the conscript had already arrived in the Americas.

    Dear Mi Fre, UA-cam prompted me to your channel yesterday, guessing that I might be a candidate for entering your club. Indeed, I find your channel unique; however, a unique channel means a unique audience, i.e. not for commerce. Please, make the videos that you want (not what sells) and make them how you want (not how it sells) - to preserve the unique value of your channel for your club members. If you need to make a living on that, then create a parallel channel "that sells" (it is not difficult to find out what sells in the field of history). Sincere regards from your new club member Tomas from Prague.

    • @michaelfreiherr
      @michaelfreiherr Рік тому

      Greetings to Prague and thank you for your advice! I will produce videos on topics in which I am interested only. For example, I am not generally interested in the recounting of battles unless they are truly exceptional. Therefore, I will never make a video that reenacts a random battle In this sense, my channel will stay unique. However, bad view counts also tell me that some things about my videos could be improved, and that I should make the effort to find out where my videos lack. If, let's say only seven people watch a video (this has happened) it also tells me that I am wasting my time and energy. I promise you, I do not intend to change the character of my channel but try to find and remove aspects that lack quality.

    I wonder if an Austrian-dominated Germany would have resulted in better outcomes for Germany and Europe in the 20thC. I expect so. The Austrian Habsburgs were civilian, politically moderate and more focused on diplomacy and balance-of-power politics than the Prussians. They had long experience of leading a great power, so it would not have been as great a change as it was for the Hohenzollerns. They would have handled it better.

      Never underestimate Austria's ability to screw things up. I say this as an Austrian. For example, the Empire triggered WW1, although Europe would have found an alternative starting point for their useless slaughter. There was a reason why Austria fell way behind Prussia and maybe it being a big and tough to control Empire was part of it.

    Another Prussia fanboy turned history youtuber I see 😏. The second thing that was dissapointing about this war was that so few evil normal people died. You can call me many things, but I am certainly not a Prussian fanboy. Actually, I think Prussia had a big part in "destroying" Germany. • @michaelfreiherr
      @michaelfreiherr Рік тому

      It did make a lot of sense ... for Austria, that is. And that is why it made no sense at all to the other parties involved. Although the exchange would have constituted a power shift, considering that Bavaria was little more than an Austrian puppet during the Coalition Wars until 1806, I am not sure if the impact of the exchange would have been that great. Napoleon would have just taken it away from Austria like he did with Tyrolia and given it to a Wittelsbacher loyal to the French Empire. However, we cannot know what would have happend when peace returned.

      Saxony was certainly unhappily situated between Austria and Prussia. Peculiar how Eastern HRE was so much less fragmented than western HRE. I suppose early HRE Emperors wanted to keep nobility who bordered the slavs and magyars to retain large duchies and margraviates so they could raise comparibly large armies in times of outside threat. Or maybe those duchies were poorly populated and yielded low revenue so that they would become undesirable if divided up for the sake of rewarding loyal supporters.

    That’s seems to me a most reasonable plan! I know you put a lot of research work in the videos but the presentation was too dry for most people. The historian’s craft channel has a similar presentation style but in his favour is that he makes regular appearances in his videos and randomly features his cat. Also his topics are more mainstream(3.Reich, Roman Empire, Japan) and it surely helps that he’s a native speaker. And still he struggled years and years. On the other hand the purely Roman history channel of Maioranus: he creates flashy videos with the same clips of the bbc Roman history show, sprinkles stock photos of 19.Century history paintings over it, puts a bombastic musical score to that. Then a title like „What if Rome industrialised“ and a catchy thumbnail of the forum Roman with industrial chimney stacks. That’s ridiculous and a sell out but he created 10 thousands of views in a few months.

      It seems like UA-cam did not post my answer.. Would you be willing to elaborate a little bit more on your points? 1) What exactly do you mean by "too dry"? Is it the "voice acting" or am I presenting to much data? In my newer videos I tried to add some jokes and switch to a more meme-like presentation. Did that work out? 2) Im am considering the option of adding sound elements. What do you personally prefer? Low-level music in the background of the main audio track or some seconds of music between the segments of each video. I am definitely going to switch my style to story telling instead of presentation.
