It is very frustrating when you find out that the aircraft that you designed and built does not fly properly. It may be tail heavy and stalls or it may be nose heavy and dives and crashes nose first into the ground. Sure, you can always add a bit of weight to offset the situation but adding weight changes the aircraft’s performance. In this video, we will look at where these nose up and nose do...

Design Your Own Aircraft for FREE with These Tools (2024)
Best introduction video in 2024!!! Crystal clear!!!!!
Elliptical wings are not the lowest drag, it's the bell shaped. See Albion Bowers research at NASA, or the video where he presents it or his published papers. YT "Flying with birds - meeting Albion Bowers"
The landing gear contributes a lot of drag even though its small compared to the rest of the aircraft. Because of its shape. Which is interesting. The tadpole shape is actually not used that much I think. Even in smaller general aviation aircraft, I think its somewhat tapered like the tadpole shape but its not really a tadpole. Practical reasons I guess. Lift induced drag is actually kinda complicated. Higher aspect ratio wings have their limitations. A longer, thinner, lower chord wing has more bending moments involved to carry the weight of the plane, requires more structure weight. Its a numbers game, trade-off. Also reduces fuel capacity depending. And maneuverability, but that might not be too important unless its a fighter or aerobatic. Keeping the CG close to the wing is good for efficiency. But the CG has to be substantially ahead of the wing's 'resultant lift point' or center of pressure or whatever, to ensure longitudinal stability. What do we mean by belly landing ? Also there are 2 prisms. The one shaped like a bullet I'm not sure about that shape. If its a prism. Which side is facing forward, against the relative wind ? And if the curved side is facing forward, why would it have a higher drag coefficient than the other prism ? Engine cowlings are good of course. But we have to make sure the engine has adequate cooling and intake airflow.
As always great video!!!! Can you also make a long length video on how to design, analyze and build an aircraft from scratch? I know you have another video on this topic, but i'd like a more elaborate and detailed video. i am absolutely loving these videos. If i can help in any manner, I will. Please keep up.
3 view drawings ❌ Blueprints ✅
Cool I need one for navy ship ww1 ,ww2 etc would anyone know any site
Thank you man, i really needed this
I never needed this, I probably won't need this, but, I see plane, I click plane.
Trying to run using online matlab, but does now work. Any idea what should be done?
Did you install the Aerospace toolbox and Statistics and machine learning toolbox first? I am using the downloaded MATLAB student version, and I am not sure if the app will work in the online version.
@@AircraftDesignToolbox Yes both toolboxes are installed. The error is like following: "Error using view (line 43) When specified as a graphics object, first argument must be one or more axes objects. Error in AID (line 1061) [AZ,EL]=view(ax{1}); ^^^^^^^^^^^ Error in Initialize_GUI (line 748) AID(0,0,'update') ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Error in AID (line 87) Initialize_GUI(choice) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Error in AID (line 125) AID(0,0,'initialize',L), return ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Error while evaluating Menu Callback. "
Sorry, I don't know how to resolve this issue as of now.

Are you working off a .PDF of the Q2?
I am using the 3 view image of the Rutan Quickie from this site: richard.ferriere.free.fr/3vues/R-3vues.html
Thanks for the video, will include a link from this video as reference in my next video.
Sure, I am excited to see what you build next!
Is the neutral point like where the resultant net lift or moments act thru ? And I just thought I would throw this out there. How come you don't see too many 3 surface aircraft out there ? I did hear from one person that the Piaggio Avanti has some stability problems but I only heard that from one person. But I guess its tricky to design with having to mitigate the interference effects, and to make sure its always stable and controllable, able to recover from stalls etc.
Neutral point can be thought of as this: If you place the C.G at the neutral point, the aircraft will be neutrally stable. Neutral stability means that if a disturbance (like a gust of wind) causes a nose-up, the aircraft will remain in that nose-up orientation until another force acts on it. If you put the C.G behind the neutral point, you will get an unstable aircraft (one where the nose up continues to happen and the aircraft stalls). If you put the C.G ahead of the neutral point, you get a stable aircraft (one where the nose wants to come back down after the initial disturbance). Yes, 3 surface designs are not very popular. Mostly, the design is used to shift the main wing aft, to increase the cabin space. There is an interesting discussion here: aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/80690/why-arent-3-surface-aircraft-more-popular-in-general-aviation Hope this helps!
Yes that helps thanks
i think i found a gem!!was searching for channels to learn basics aircraft design principles. i have a question, for all the data u used in this video, what was the wing air-foil cross-section? I believe the design of the air-foil effects the clmax heavily.
Thank you for your kind words! The data I used in the video is mainly from the book "Basics of RC Model Aircraft Design". You are right, the airfoil affects clmax value, however, for most RC plane wings, the clmax value is close to 1. This is more of a rule of thumb, which can be used for initial sizing. Moreover, for "real" wings (finite span wings), we don't completely achieve the theoretical clmax value of the airfoil (which we get from the airfoil plots). Also note that the wing loading values for different models suggested in the video is for one particular type of construction method. So, in practice, the wing loading must be chosen according to what similar planes of similar construction have.
Very interesting! Have you written a technical paper describing your methodology? The URL in the description isn't working.
Just to be clear, I have not developed this tool, I have just shown how to install it and get started. If you want to see the user manual, you can see it when you open the Aircraft Intuitive Design App in MATLAB by clicking on the "help" tab. A pdf of the user manual will open containing information about which methods are used in the background. If the link is not working, you can just search for "Aircraft Intuitive Design" in your browser. Hope this helps!
thanks for the video
I would highly appreciate if you make a video on Reynold's Number
Sure, I will try to make one!
Please make more of these...
Dude, I should say this, You deserve the best, No beating around the bush and why is this video not at 100k views atleast..?
Thank you so much!
Where I can sell my 3D design of small airplane?
Maybe you can look into sites like CGTrader. You can even sell 3D files on Etsy. Hope this helps!
I just found the channel I've been looking for for so long. Liked, Subscribed. 🔥👍
Thank you so much!
Are there specific units that need to be used in the CG calculator?
No, works for any unit as long as you use consistent units
Please if it's possible to do a video about designing a 3 lifting surfaces aircraft like the Piaggio Avanti P180. Thanks!
Sure, I will try :)
I'm i the only one that wants to make the Valkyrie shuttle/ tav-37
If I ever need something like this your are my go to option
Thank you so much!
Excellent information!
Thank you!
Can designing things there really work in real life?
This is just one of the initial steps, and the design acts like a starting point for further analysis. Right now, I only create 3D models (which can be later used to visualize/present/3D print the idea). A lot of important steps come next, based on which we iterate the design. As it is said in aircraft design, "you never build the dash-1". (It is easier if making an RC plane, because the design can be built, flown and tested without much investment).
not really, there will be a lot of things that couldn't be fully built in 3d means, you will also have to measure different things about the craft, such as center of gravity, drag lift coefficient. could use simulation games such as flyout to build it thou :D
Does this work for latest version of matlab?
Yes
How can I design on mobile so easily?? Can I use this in mobile?
I used the desktop version of MATLAB for running the application. It may not be possible to run this app on mobile.
@@AircraftDesignToolbox ok thanks 😅💔💔
Looks cool.
keep up with the great work! is there a way to test those fuselages after modeling?
You can check out VSPAero, I am currently looking into it as well.
