My passion is flying STOL backcountry planes.
I love the adventure - exploring the hinterland, discovering new grass strips, testing my skills but most of all having fun in my STOL plane!
If you are a like-minded pilot, want to join me on an adventure, or just want to know more about flying bush planes and STOL (short take-off and landing) in the UK’s hinterland then please make contact - I'd love to hear from you.

Learning backcountry flying - STOL, beach landings in a Top Cub and Carbon Cub FX3
I flew 4,912 miles from the UK to the USA to learn more about backcountry flying. I wanted to enhance my flying skills, learn new techniques along with meeting some true backcountry aviators plus enjoy that American hospitality and a Texan BBQ!
On my week's backcountry training course in the Texas Hill Country, I tested my flying skills on farm strips, perfecting STOL (short take-off and landing), tackled deep sand on beaches and sand bars along with flying low and slow to identifying areas to drag and land.
I flew the CubCrafters TOP Cub which reminded me so much of the Super Cub I learnt in. Along with this, I flew a CubCrafters Carbon Cub FX fitted out with ACME AERO landing gear and Airframes Alaska Alaskan Bush Tyres. Wow what smooth no bounce landings you can make with this gear!
Since getting back to the UK I've had the chance to use my new found backcountry flying skills landing on farm strips throughout the Midlands and the East of England, along with this I ventured up to the West coast of Scotland in my Aviat Husky to really put my skills to the test.

Trying out Cubcrafters X Cub - take off from Llano airport Texas. What a great plane, extremely quick, very comfortable and handles very well - a significant comfort up-grade from the Super Cub I learnt in!
Short take off from sand bar in STOL plane

Out and about in the Top Cub landing and taking off from sand bars. The sand is so deep but the 31' Alaskan Bush Tire could deal with it. When accelerating you could feel the initial drag on the tire and the tailwheel.

Dragging the beach on Garret Island in the Top Cub before making a full stop landing. The ground was soft and bumpy but the Alaskan Bush tires could cope with it.

I spent an afternoon flying a Cubcrafters X Cub in the Texas Backcountry. This is my first landing of the X Cub at Fredericksburg - I think that was okay... nice and smooth on a wind day. This plane is so refined and very easy to fly, extremely comfortable with superb endurance.

Training with TacAero - spent the day flying around Lake Buchanan and landing on Garret Island beach and a few sandbars. The Cubcrafters Top Cub was great fun and reminded me so much of the Piper SuperCub I learnt in.
Another fanatic STOL training day - short takeoff

Off on another fantastic STOL training day with TacAero. I spent a fantastic week with TacAero in Texas learning about backcountry flying. I flew the Top Cub and the Carbon Cub FX throughout the Texas Hill Country, landing on farms strips, gravel bars and also beach landings on Garret Island. Here is a short film of me taking off from our base at Gillespie Airport with my instructor.

Texas STOL backcountry, short takeoff from a sandbar in a Cubcrafters Top Cub

The day was hot and the sand was extremely deep on this sandbar - it took a lot to get going especially as we were two up and the tailwheel was buried! However, the Top Cub is a very capable STOL / backcountry plane - a delight to fly. I spent a week with the backcountry flying school TacAero. The week was full of fun, landing on farm strips, sandbars along with flying through the Texas backcou...
Short take-off Aviat Husky backcountry STOL plane

This is the first time I've taken-off from my new 750ft grass strip. The Husky left the ground after circa 130ft, a very light 6mph headwind helped. The Husky is a USA built STOL backcountry plane - it is unstoppable with its 180hp engine.

As part of my Backcountry flying training course with TacAero I dragged many sandbars on the Llano River, Texas before landing. Here is a fabulous spot which I dragged and then landed on. Dragging is a procedure to check-out the conditions of the strip before landing. It allows you to check the firmness of the sand, spot obstacles such as, rocks, tree stumps and identify a clear path for landin...

Another amazing day's backcountry flying with Team TacAero. I'm learning so much, gaining new skills, becoming and aviator (at last!) and loving every minute of it! We went canyon flying in the Texas backcountry before heading off to drag and land some sandbars. I travelled from the United Kingdom to Fredericksburg, Texas to take a 5 day backcountry flying course with TacAero at Gillespie Airpo...
Low and slow flying along the Llano River in a STOL backcountry Carbon Cub plane

A Top Cub's natural environment - low and slow along the Llano River searching for sandbars to land at. The sandbars look smooth until you do a low pass and see the rocks, scrubland and holes. You also need eagle eyes to spot the power lines spanning the river especially when the poles are hidden amongst the tress. I travelled from the United Kingdom to Fredericksburg, Texas to take a 5 day bac...

Farm strip flying is fantastic fun especially when you fly a STOL plane like an Aviat Husky. Backcountry flying gives you the opportunity to explore and see areas of the UK you can't normal visit. This short film is about a departure from a buddies farm strip in Derbyshire (Central England) and illustrates why you should always be ready for the unexpected. I've gone from a fabulous summer's BBQ...

A farm strip in Leicestershire, East Midlands, UK
@HinterlandPilot cause it sure wasn't in the video
Very nice footage, nice text, not noisy music, but probably dangerous place over there. Love it, don't stop providing video like this. I use movies creator program to make lenses correction, it definitely works
Thank you for your great comments and tips - much appreciated! Feedback like this is extremely helpful and motivational. Next film will be UK based, farm strip flying the Aviat Husky. Best.
Well done Ed. Keep posting these
Thanks Wes!
You could have come to me here with your husky in the west of Ireland 😅
Thanks for reaching out. I wouldn't mind giving Ireland ago... Please take a look at my Instagram feed @HinterlandPilot as it's a good overview of some of my farm strip flying around the UK. Best.
Come back soon!
Fantastic trip. I had so much fun and I'd really like to return to the USA for more backcountry flying / training.
Looks fun. Do you need a Piggyback FAA license to get formal tuition?
It was brilliant fun - well worth the journey. I didn't need an FAA licence as I was under instruction all of the time. However, I did have to notify Homeland Security and get a FTSP (Flight Training Security Programme) clearance from the TSA (Transport Security Administration) to allow me to take the course / have instruction. All very straightforward stuff... If you need anymore information please ask or contact TacAero. Best.
Love this style of video and hearing more about each landing & the intention behind them. Great story and amazing flying! Hope to see more like this
Many thanks - much appreciated!
The same sound of piper super cub on Xplane
Amazing!
Thanks, it was so much fun.
Fantastic weather!
It was a fabulous day!
Essa é a aviação que eu gosto. Num avião desse tipo eu me sinto no paraíso. Aqui o mais comum que temos é o Paulistinha P-56.
Que delícia de avião!
Thanks!
Nice work Ed
Many thanks - much appreciated!
Amazing video 👏
Thanks 😁 I'm pleased you like it!
Good job
Thanks!
How much horse power
This is a buddy's plane - I think it's the high HP version, 260hp?
Thanks
I’m looking at this exact plane on flightradar right now
Wow! What a coincidence. Great plane…
@@HinterlandPilot yeah I was sorting through PA18s in the filter and saw that N number flying in Wyoming and looked it up. Did it flip a while back?
@@hooks_and_horns No sure about that. I flew the plane whilst on a backcountry course in Texas…
Great take off 👏
👏
Pilots in Alaska do it best due to terrain. Look up Alaska Bush Pilots in STOL or the Valdez, Alaska airshow they put most people to shame. They can land on high rise helipads
Thanks I'll check it out...
That was so good you probably didn’t know you landed 😃
It was smooth - he did well!
I want piper 28 ..give us about it if you have an idea pls.
I have a twin of your plane! Great videos mate
Brilliant, they’re fabulous planes. I hear from my contacts is the USA the earlier manufactured models are in demand as they’ll the lightest weight and a great platform for for STOL modification. Check out my Instagram @hinterlandpilot as more videos on there. Am I correct in thinking you are based in Argentina? Best regards.
Is that a PA 11 or a PA 18????
It’s a beautiful PA 18 Super Cub
PA-11 has no flaps.
is that short for you?
Everything is relative, for all you know he’s fully loaded with a high da. In which case this is a very short take off for anybody
I wasn't flying the plane. To give you an idea, the strip is 750ft long. BTW - I take off in my Husky in circa 250ft +/- depending on the wind strength.
is that in maryland?
Hi there, Thanks for your message. It's in the East Midlands UK.
no problem! The place where the video was taken looked like a place in maryland I go all the time
I remember that Canyon! Very nice!
Hi there, Thanks for your comments - much appreciated! It was an exhilarating flight along this canyon especially in the FX3… in fact the week with TacAero was exhilarating! I see you’ve been on the course too - fun? Take a look at my instagram channel as there is more on there. @hinterlandpilot Best.
Get outta here with those flaps. Be a man.
Excelente avião! Deve ser PA-18.
Piper super cub
@@F4U5Ncorsair Eu gosto demais desse tipo de avião para o lazer. Fiz o meu curso básicos de pilotagem com Paulistinha P56, que é basicamente o mesmo. Muito obrigado pelo vídeo!
Please you liked it. Thanks for watching there film. Enjoy your flying.
Can I use thos
Hello bro
Good
Hello
Pretty true to size ?
Great fit for me - true size. Size 40 - 42 inch. Extremely comfortable to wear.
you don’t see many bush or sea planes in the UK, I’d love to see more
Thanks for your comments. You're right they aren't as popular as in the USA however, there are a few Cubs, Husky's and Maule's tucked away. Check-out Instagram for more, also please see my channel @hinterlandpilot
Where are you based in Norfolk ?
Thanks for your question - I'm based in Leicestershire.
Don’t get to see the landing light shining on the ground like that very often!
How short a strip will you get in and out of? Also interested in your hangar build! Coverted barn?
Hi there, My strip is circa 240 metres long, slightly up hill one way and a hedge at the other end. As a reference, I generally use circa a third of the runway in light winds to stop (and take-off) without using excessive braking - strong much winds quicker! The hangar is a bespoke build, 'T' shaped hanger using Yorkshire boarding, Gale Breaker sliding curtain with a tin roof. Ed
@@HinterlandPilot you ought visit mine. About 200m max 29/11. 29 much easier. On Skydemon 'Rolleston Park' directly between Tatenhill and Derby. Had an Easy Raider microlight based here but have sold it. Now have a Groppo Trail which is at Darley Moor and haven't had the bottle to have a go at my own strip yet... Sean

Question. When you take off from a small farm field, how do you get into the ATC coverage, do you just call on the radio and say “hi guys, here I am?”
Hi there, This is what I do... I tune into my local ATC when on the ground and listen to their broadcasts so I can pick-up on local traffic movements etc. I then take-off and as soon as I'm flying the plane (and happy) I call them up and request a Basic Service. Alternatively, I tune into their frequency and use their listening code which alerts them too, I'm flying in their area and listening into their frequency if they need to contact me. Ed
Brilliant short video, thanks for sharing 👍🌹
Thanks for your comments - much appreciated!
Very cool use of a 360 degree camera! 👍
Many thanks - pleased you liked it!
Beautiful landing, grass strips are the best!
Thanks! Absolutely agree with you.
How much does a brand new one with full specs cost?
Around $450,000 plus add-on and an improved panel etc
Living the dream
Absolutely - the best time ever!
،♥️🌹🌹🌹👍🏻
Many thanks - appreciated!
I watch a guy in Iowa land his Belite ultralight Cub in about 75 to 80 feet and takes off in about 130 feet really cool! Yes all STOL planes rule🏁Your burgundy and white Husky is super nice 🌻
Hi there, Thanks for your comments - much appreciated! Wow! That is very impressive landings and take-offs. I'm pleased you like the Husky's colour combination - classic livery! Agree, STOL rocks!

Too bad the landing was out of view, otherwise good approach. USA
Thanks - lovely plane and his an excellent pilot. I need to chop that hedge down!
How about washing, what do they recommend?
Machine wash warm!
