    I noticed something with the 2 different packages. The small version and large version. I believe the small version is in Europe since many copies from the UK, France, and Netherlands (they had instructions in French and Dutch) used this packaging while the bigger version with Pac-Man running with the ghost is the standard in the US since every American channel showcasing this game had this one. The colors are different in the Europe and USA one. The colors in the one you have, have more vibrant and saturated colors whereas I with the USA version have noticed how the blue and green have a weird vintage tint. Edit: I should mentioned the inner casing in the US one is terrible since there is no indents that keep all the contents in place. The European version has a blue case with indents that secure the pieces

    You couldn't put the image of amoebas in, as half the time the "formed" shape on the inner edge, and the other time its on the outer (ie, the long corner to corner) edge. Interesting game though. Having the ability to cycle cards out of your hand and draw new ones would help to mitigate the luck element - as well as the looping problem (you can simply abandon the high point scoring shapes when you get into a deadlock, and the introduction of new cards can let you back some simpler smaller shapes some of the time - which can be easier to form).

    • @AtticRaidersRetroReviews
      @AtticRaidersRetroReviews Місяць тому

      Ah yes, indeed you are right. I clearly didn't think that one through fully. Though perhaps a non-coloured tile that still had more undulating/"wibbly" amoeba edges may be fun. Agreed - we have come to the same conclusion - swapping out a card rather than turning a piece is the way to go I think to potentially break the deadlocks.

    • @pseudofenton
      @pseudofenton Місяць тому

      @@AtticRaidersRetroReviews If the lines on the tiles were made to look like the "wibbly" outer membrane then that could work, yes. As I muse further on this, if you wanted more visually interesting tiles, and also another counter to deadlocks then I have an idea of how to further (and radically) alter the game. You could have some tiles with "food" globs on them (either in one/both of the corners, or in the middle strip). Scoring a shape with a glob inside it is worth more points if you were the one to complete it (or grants you extra moves/draw more cards/some reward like perhaps enabling the new move I explain below). They'd likely start in the corners of the board at the beginning of the game. Then on your turn you can rotate one tile as normal, or you also get another option (possibly limited in some way, play testing needed) so the food globs move around. Your new move option is to lift (optionally rotate) and slide a tile into the gap you just left, then place the lifted piece into the newly vacated spot. Over time, this moves the food into the center of the game board - but you can also play keep away with them to stop them scoring often (although smaller shapes are better suited to scoring them - so the reward likely wants to be multiplied by the size of the shape that scored with them). This new move also gives you the ability to more radically alter the board on your turn. As both tiles would become immune to alteration on your opponents following turn, deadlocks can flex in multiple directions whilst still blocking. This should hopefully make it easier for one or both players to pivot between their initial card goal to another card they're holding. (Technically you wouldn't even need the food globs for this, and you may also want to address the scoring of some shapes, as achieving complex shapes is easier with this greater degree of manipulation available) All of this would need play testing to iron out, but I thought I'd share the concept in case you wanted to experiment.

    I played the 86 version as a kid. After a gap of many years we started playing it again with my nephews. I thought the dolphin protected you from a shark but not the sea serpent, a dolphin could carry you all the way home if you use all three moves at once and the people were dumped straight into the water when removing a piece of land. Either my version is slightly different from yours or I'll have to re-read the rules.
