A $3,500 E-bike After 5,300 Miles: Costs, Wear & Tear, and Lessons Learned
This $3,500 e-bike has been through a lot over the last 5,000 miles (and so has this human). So I wanted to share my thoughts on hitting this milestone - breaking down the real costs of owning an e-bike, sharing how this bike has held up, and giving three key takeaways from using an e-bike as my full-time ride.

How I turned The Gospel into a CrossFit workout
Переглядів 22121 день тому
Reading The Gospel has been, and continues to be, an incredibly transformative endeavour. And challenging myself to represent it through another one of my passions (fitness) has deepened my appreciation for it exponentially. Thank you to Fr. Matt and Jake for appearing at the right time and answering my call to be a part of this project. - It took me 72:50 (with 17 total box step ups) to finish...

What ? You paid $3000 For the bike ? Thats excessive . at that price point you are way better of with a gas scooter
You would end up with a lots of space in your garage
Haha this is very true 😂
Top of the line Shimano Alivio 🤣
Educate me!
So you spent $5,000, rode 5,000 miles. $1 per mile - correct?
That does sound correct!
great video, thanks for that´´´´´´´´´´´´´´´Spoke! For 4 years I have ridden a Batavus, a shade cheaper than yours. Internal gears, cosy cruising. Just reached 8000 km (5000m) in your speak. One puncture, forest paths with fine gravel and sharp flints. Changed the tyres once. Glorious fun and so relaxed in comparison to driving.
Hahaha kilometers have a special place in my heart ❤️ Glad to hear all of this!
Hey man! This is a great video. I love your personality and the content so far. I've really been trying to find a community to be a part of. I'm currently collecting footage since I lived right alongside the Denver to Rio Grand Western Railway Trail. I have tried getting some night time footage of it but its so creepy alone LOL, I need to get better at filming before going there to film. I think you could make some amazing videos on the trail; it offers stunning views of the northern Utah Wasatch Mountains. It's incredible how far you can go without seeing a car at all! Denver to Rio Grande new Mexico baby. I will be taking it to Arizona from SLC once the weather begins warming up Hit me up and lets chat dude! Or anyone that sees this that is familiar with that trail, lets ride
Dude! Appreciate the kind words! I have friends in Denver, love the mountain west, and would love to check it out some day.
That’s definitely not top of the line shimano.
On a scale of all bike manufactures? Or on the scale of what Shimano offers?
I have a used a TREK VERVE + .... Looks like I can expect plenty of great riding ahead .... Thanks for posting this video......
Woo enjoy! Of course 😃
Yes! I’m finding continuing to ride in my old age is great for my well-being. Nice work on this video. Thanks.
Appreciate that and so happy to hear 🙌
A real drama queen
😃
Judging by how you present, I think that you are an attention addict and made a big freaking deal about you riding a bicycle. You spent a ton of money over 18 months. Good! your sorrows are your own fault. You picked a $4000 bicycle, you don 't change a whole wheel if you snap a spoke. You replace the $3 part. This is not supposed to be a comparison between riding a bike and owning a car. Your videos are over the top descriptions of naive young people with great incomes.
Nice to see someone on 2 wheels, but I personally cannot justify the price or utility of ebikes, I keep a regular road bike and a motorcycle, it really is not realistic going long distances on a bike, especially with such atrocious public transport. As a side note you really don't have to wear a bicycle helmet, they don't really do anything, the only safe helmet on 2 wheels is a full face helmet, and that's mostly so you still have a face in case you survive a bad crash at high speeds.
This is an interesting perspective, and yeah it seems like e-bikes get caught into "not bike-y enough for cyclists" and "too bike-y" for motorcyclists. I think that that's pretty valid.
You would get an e-mail from Canyon saying that you can't ride your bike and end up buying a new car.
It's a cruel world out there!
Trying to justify a $2k expenditure with manic romanticism of long term savings, better health and saving the environment can work out. But for most people they just threw away money, created more consumer waste and may have even injured themselves when they crashed due to how dangerous these can be. Salesmen and manufacturers are promoting e-bikes using idealism that doesn't live past the first month. Before you consider this. Try riding a normal bike, try renting a public e-bike and try driving less first.
Yeah I think the "honeymoon phase" problem is real. I think that might by why selling the car is the commitment needed - or at least only owning a purely functional car. That is a really great point to. I would definitely recommend for someone to spend a month or so on a normal or rental bike before making the jump. Good consideration!
I'd go bankrupt, quickly. Hard to to a 4000 LB landscaping trailer with a bike, 50+ miles a day.
This is very true 😂
I hope you buy a better lock 😭😭 maybe a skunklock carbon cuz angle grinders are pretty common nowadays
I'll look into that 😃
Hey man, great quality video, well put together. You should be getting more and more viewers based on the production here. All the best.
You have no clue how much I appreciate that! Much love!
@@ericebikes Yeah man, you earned it Hope your channel keeps growing. Peace and love from UK :)
I came for the cost savings, but stayed for the improved health and mental energy. Thanks for a great review!
🎯 Glad to hear and of course!
Glad to see I'm not the only one that forgets the one crucial word when I'm trying to finish a sentence.
Hahaha it's ......uh........what's the word? Unfortunate 😂
Great video I really appreciate the honest look into what it’s like making the switch. As a home bike mechanic I’d say it’s odd that u replaced your cassette so early. Those should last a bit longer maybe it was cheap materials used in the original ebike kit so that would make sense if that’s the case. But usually you’d replace the chain first as that’s the first thing to usually go.
If u keep the chain perfectly lubed and shifters are dialed in. the drive train should theoretically last for lifetimes only need to replace the chain once it’s worn
Yeah I originally went to change the chain, but the new chain and the cassette didn't "break in" together so it was a little janky. Also, it was specifically the 5th and 6th gears, which as a rookie bike rider, I think I abused 😂
Spokes
took me a hot second 😂
5000 mile review of my Aventon level! I have had it 2 years. Live in northeast US - Typical trip is bike 17 mi to work using 50% of battery (hilly and level 3 or 4), charge at work, then return home. Mix of paved trails, neighborhoods, and fairly dangerous stroads. - I have also taken the bike (battery removed) on front of bus racks and on my city’s light rail. Quite easy to do so if you can lift the bike easily - Coldest i have used it is 6 degrees F. Took me down to 30% on the same trip so some cold weather range loss but not drastic - New rear tire at 4000 due to wear. - Replaced broken battery toggle at 2500 (plastic cracked) - Replaced missing rear fender screw at 4000 - No mechanical or electrical issues. Range drop under 5% so far - Upgrades from bike shop: - Heavy tubes - Bell - Handlebar mirror-best money i have ever spent. Absolutely necessary - Bottle cage - I use Kryptonite chain lock which is pretty heavy but fine for ebike.
This is sweet 📝 I gotta look into the handlebar mirror and I'm wow'd at 6 degrees! Godspeed my friend!
Honestly that kryptonite chain lock is so good, its worth its weight even if you have a normal pedal bike like I do. I had a abus chain lock before and that lock almost lost me a bike because someone cut it off, then wasted enough time trying to get my other lock off that I was able to arrive.
It would get nicked, and you would have neither.
The UK especially has a problem with that, right?
@@ericebikes Yup
6:36 terrible and dangerous advice regarding clothing, you’re already low visibility on a ebike. You need to wear bright colors so motorists can see u
Yeah couldve worded it better - stuff like a vest/lights would probably be most helpful. But wearing light or white pants/shoes/shirts would be pointless from a functional perspective. Thanks for pointing that out!
If decreasing carbon emissions was really a priority for governments of the world, then people who ride ebikes (instead of having a car) should in fact be paid to do so. And it should be a fair amount like 1000 bucks per month at least. This mode of transportation saves so much in carbon emissions, specially when compared to large SUVs that are so common nowadays. Imagine a program where people who bought trucks and SUVs during Covid overpricing, sold them and then get an ebike. Suddenly their monthly car expense would become income to them, paid directly to their bank account, for as long as they use the ebike and remain car free.
Run for office my friend! You’ve got my vote 🤝
Great video, I think the constant stream of captions was kind of distracting though, distracted from the great cinematography imo
I appreciate that and thank you for the feedback!
Amazon has 20inch fat wheel trike ebikes that are more stable in winter. That can adapt a 2 person seat or large cargo basket at the back. They look way cooler than the 26inch trike bikes
I gotta check those out! 🚴🏼♂️
I'm a 16 year old with a onewheel and a car. In my small town, a onewheel or any other PEV like that is all i need. I rarely drive my car and only use it if it's wet outside or if i need to drive out of town. people think im weird for not driving my car as much but i love shredding on my PEV and saving the miles on my car for when i really need it. plus it is faster to commute around town on because you are very zippy and arent necessarily restricted on laws as much as cars are. much ontop of that i've found a new hobby, a fix for my mental health, and something else to do to kill the time without wasting gas. 2500+ miles on my onewheel so far and im going to keep climbing up. I do not regret buying a used onewheel.
Those one wheels look so cool, and I think that system is something that so many people (especially young people) can get behind. I got my first car at 16 and never questioned it. But this would have been so much better. Thanks for sharing 🙌
Too much hatred for cycling exists for me to commit to this. I tried and got a milkshake thrown at me and called a stupid c*nt on separate occasions. I live in the UK.
You would get wet on rainy days
Very true 🌧️
Came to this video after watching your "bought an e-bike" video. Glad to see you tightened up that helmet! Cheers for the trip report. I took a folding bike on the Acela recently and it was as simple as you say. You may have to do a little bit of tetris with other people's luggage, moving a bag or two to the upper racks so that the bike can occupy the lower one. Haven't done a full-size bike yet, but I hope to do it next spring on the Empire Service line. Ride safe!
HAHAHA YES!!! So happy someone noticed my helmet, I got so many friendly reminders on the last video 😅 The folding bikes are sweet and the tetris analogy is spot on 🎯 Thank you and to you as well!
I have 2 ebikes and one for my daughter. We often rode bikes all over and I have lots of fun and good memories.
Love to hear this 🙌
Hey brother how you doing I appreciate your videos very informational. I have a question I have a fat bike with 26× 4 inch tires. Would I be allowed to get on the Amtrak with tires that big.
Great question: it may vary by line. For the Vermonter, the bike storage hooks accommodate tires up to 2 inches. Other lines may have different storage equipment or options. Worth finding out!
You’ll have thousands more saved up if you stay warm and don’t catch a cold. Also, don’t have kids and a wife, they make you get cars 😂
HAHA very true. A happy wife is the #1 priority
Do not buy an e bike. Seriously.
Don't. You'll have too much fun.
Is anybody doing 40-45 mile round trip commutes by e-bike? I'm curious what it would be like. I haven't had a car in years. I commute 40+ miles round-trip with a combination of transit and Brompton folding bike. If the weather is bad, I can leave the bike at home; the timing is almost the same either way. If my job were under 10 miles away, I would consider commuting on an e-bike and eliminate the crowded, smelly buses and trains. But 45 miles just seems too far.
Hopefully someone sees this and has some experience with that! I feel like I can do 15 miles in an hour reliably commuting...so 1.5 hours there and 1.5 back may be a bit much. Class 3 E-bikes can assist/throttle to 28mph, which could cut down on that time a bit. Transit is cool (big fan), but the crowd, smell, and schedule are definitely downsides 😃 Godspeed!
Just saw this. I have a good e-bike. The main thing I worry about is the tires. However, it came with bombproof (according to bike mechanics) Schwalbe Marathons and I got 5000 miles on the original pair with no flats, riding on and off pavement. I even took my Dutch comfort style bike on single track. I live in goathead country too. I'm on my second pair of Schwalbes and hope to continue to avoid flats. Also, the riding score here would be maybe a 1. A bridge has a bike lane, I think, but nothing else does. I try to wear bright clothes as there are many distracted drivers and I often smell pot smoke wafting out of windows. That's legal here. There is no traffic enforcement so got to be careful.
Thanks for sharing! Holy smokes 5,000 miles with no flats is an accomplishment. Godspeed!
“99.9% of drivers are considerate”, where do you live?! Here in H Texas, half the drivers ignore my existence, the rest of them HATE me because I take part of THEIR domain: the road. Most drivers think bikes should use the sidewalk! Anyway, I did sell my car, and do my daily commute on an e-bike. Ironically, other cyclists consider me as a “cheater”. That’s Texas in a nutshell! This city has recently terminated the bicycle rental program, removed all the bike rental stations in the blink of an eye.
I'm in CT! Maybe I would define "considerate" as "not yelling out the window" or "not trying to run me off the road" 😂 You brought up such a great point...I do feel like the e-bikes are hated by car drivers and other cyclists alike. Texas seems like it always has its special way of doing things. Godspeed!
we bought our e bikes in 2021, still use our non e bikes and folding bikes but the joy of an e bike is something everyone should experience!
That's awesome thank you for sharing that!
Good on you, bro. This is something I've been considering a lot lately.
If you have any questions about it, I'm here! 🤝
Wish I had a job closer to home. I thought about a e bike but 60 miles to work and back is a trip and would wear me out just to get there. I do lots of longer 15 mile + rides on my MTB, but after, it's time for a nap. Maybe one day it will be possible. I put 15k on my truck just in commuting every year. That's a lot of riding. 😅
Yeah 60 miles to work is a bit of a long haul 😂 The truck is a bit of a necessity at that point. Godspeed on those MTB rides!
Yes it's cultural, becuse humans created a cultural around cars.
Definitely seems like a big factor
I bought an adventure motorcycle (ADV) with aluminum panniers, top box, tank bag and a tall windscreen. I have a Gore-Tex riding suite and heated vest. I can carry more crap, ride in more cold rainy weather than I thought. But I'd never sell my small truck. It's old, dented, runs when I need it. Most of all, I can drive it in the snow. Life doesn't stop when it snows. Things still need to be accomplished in the 4 months of ice, snow and freezing weather.
The dedication is real! 🙌 Best of luck this winter and thank you for sharing that good info!
It's normal to cycle in Iceland.
I've been! Beautiful country
I did not have a car till I was 28, I was pedaling everywhere no matter the season and weather. In fact, I still use my two bikes as a daily transportation (before 2022 I used to have three bikes). The car is reserved for recreational purposes mainly as it was intended in the first place (my second car, powerful and capable). Like for journeys more than 100km long or with my wife (she doesn`t like cycling at all though tried doing it a few times) or for stuff like overlanding or camping with a group of friends who aren`t as strong cyclists as me. But my first, 'boring' car was bought out of a necessity after my country (Ukraine) was invaded by russians and there was a strong possibility in the first few months of an invasion that me and my family would be forced to flee out of the country. But I enjoyed driving as such and added a new hobby to the list. P.S. I dond`t like an idea of E-bikes and EVs, I think they are so... IDK... plasticky feeling and not exciting. And their environmental friendliness is vastly overrated.
Thanks for sharing this, what a cool story. It sounds like a car is a very much worthwhile investment 🙌. E-bikes are the future!!! I agree with you on the EV's. I think the ultimate goal is to help people realize they don't need a 2-ton vehicle to transport their 80kg body to the grocery store and back. Doesn't matter if the 2-ton vehicle runs on gas or electric or used cooking oil or whatever. Please stay safe and Godspeed!
@@ericebikes Thanks mate!🤝
D I d you consider a Vespa?
I think mopeds, motorcycles, etc. are super cool! Not for me right now, though.
It gets cold where i live..i drive a used truck and its paid for..not a thousand a month.public transportion sucks..i ride my bicycle for short trips..i need a truck to make my life easier...its good on gas a 4 cyd...a truck is real freedom for me...i dont want a e bike they are heavy.cost alot for a good one..no place to store it.second floor apt...
Definitely a solid way to go about it 💪 And there are some limitations. Glad you found that right balance!
Not to be a pedantic stickler, but there's no way your cost to charge the battery is even close to $1. The national average for a Kwh is 16 cents. The most expensive state is Hawaii at 42 cents. Your bikes battery is 500wh or half a Kwh, so even if you lived in Hawaii it would only cost you 21 cents to fully charge your battery. I just wanted to highlight this cause there are a lot of people that have no clue how much their electricity costs compared to how many people know what the price of gasoline is in their area. E-bikes are incredibly cheap, even if you only used a throttle and never pedaled. My bike can go 20 miles on throttle only in my area with some hills. Even at Hawaii prices, that's about a penny per mile.
Yes you're right - I did a bit too generous of a round up. This is some good info 😃
@@ericebikes Keep up the great content! I loved your Amtrak video!
Thanks for this very enjoyable video. I live on a farm that's 90km from the nearest town so a vehicle is a necessity. Luckily I work only 12.5km away from home, so I am able to bike. I have to ride straight into strong winds on many days home and I started riding less as I didn't want to get home so late. Last year when the price dropped I bought a Trek Powerfly and I absolutely love it for commuting. I still like to take my regular bike on some days as I can get to work faster since I'm not speed limited, but I make sure to look at the forecast and only do that on days that aren't windy.
I appreciate that! And thank you for sharing your story 🙌 It sounds like you've found a good balance
this an awesome idea. you can also bring an e-scooter on board as long it weighs 50 pounds or less. if only i knew about this 16 years ago when the price tag of traveling everywhere was significantly CHEAPER then today. time flies.
The e-scooter is so underrated, especially if you use it in tandem with cars/buses/trains! Thank you!
