James, I have the exact same issue with my '81. I drilled 800 holes on the other hull last year and not is good. I will attempt to do the same thing in the other side but it is as bad as yours. I will attempt the drill and screw method. Cutting a hole like you did seems very drastic. Please keep posting as your project continues.
