A Better Way
United Kingdom
Приєднався 11 вер 2021
Hello! We're Dan & Andrea and we sold our house to buy an old barn in mid-West Wales. We're going to do as much of the build ourselves as possible, learning as we go. We both have full time jobs and so try to fit the build in around work hours and the weather in Wales! We're embracing major changes to our normal routine to explore alternative living and taking on new challenges and learning new skills in a quest to discover a better way for us to live.
Pouring the Concrete!
It's concrete pouring day! We have a premix concrete truck showing up to fill in the bases for our power and water sheds. A few mistakes were made and a few lessons learned!
If you've poured a concrete base before, what lessons did you learn?

Laying the Groundwork: Prepping Platforms for Power & Water 🚧
Переглядів 2,5 тис.21 годину тому
This week, we’re focused on preparing the platforms for the concrete pour that will support our power and water sheds. It’s a crucial step in building our off-grid setup. Watch us as we lay the groundwork (literally!) for a more sustainable future! We decided to place the sand under the shuttering because our wood is 100mm wide, and we don’t want the sand taking up space inside and reducing the...

We’re getting closer to making our off-grid dreams a reality! We’re also figuring out what our home’s foundation needs and making some exciting progress. Plus, we couldn’t resist having a bit of fun in the digger before it has to go back. Join us on our journey as we take another big step toward sustainable living!
3 intruders on the land & starting our first project!

Building a dry stone wall for our power house is the first step in getting power to our land and our future home. The grid was very expensive to get installed in our valley in Wales, so we opted to set up solar as our main source of electricity. We plan to have a generator to provide us backup power in emergencies, or when we run out of power until we work out the right solar panel setup for ou...

Sharing our initial plans and how we're trying to get there. A not so spoiler alert, it works out... eventually!
Little bit of advice, hand mix the small stuff as a learning curve, then you know you’ll have enough 😁
A smaller batch sounds like a much easier day! We did consider it but weirdly it actually worked out cheaper for us to order this much premix from our local aggregate company instead of buying the separate materials (plus potentially a cement mixer) and then having to do all the mixing ourselves. When we do a larger quantity we are definitely paying extra for the spout / tube option so we don't have to wheelbarrow though!!
@ yes I understand the cost is cheaper etc but perfect little slab to practice mixing and I guarantee you’ll need a cement mixer more than once doing this project! Also absolute zero stress and your own time when doing it yourself, but still you made good of a situation like not ordering enough, good job. I’m a builder and it still happens now 😎
Bit too fast to tamp to, but you could put it in your Concrete Base playlist? ua-cam.com/video/Si5CSpUCDGY/v-deo.htmlsi=P2nRGEMke-7FqQPC
🤣🤣🤣 Maybe if we were tamping that fast we would have matched up more 😂 Or absolute chaos 😆
Good job 👍👍 Tough day 🥐🥐🎉
Thanks Andy :)
Love it 😂 synchronicity 🎉
🤣 I think we managed to tamp at exact opposite times nearly 100% of the time 😆
You all won't gain any weight working like that😂 Good job.
Haha! It certainly gives us a good workout! 😁
Tiny advice, after watching YT Videos how to do it buy the tools you need. No level, no floater??? I don’t know for what you need the cement floors but it should be compacted, level and easy to clean (smooth).
Thank you 🙂 It wasn't shown on the video as it was dark when we went out but we did use an edging trowel to round the edges. We levelled the shuttering beforehand and kept the concrete level with that. We might use a float for a different job but these two bases are just for beneath two sheds that will have separate raised floors so they need to be level and strong but not aesthetically perfect 🙂
It was undoubtedly a hard job, but I don’t think you helped yourselves. There’s loads of You Tube videos out there, for future reference please check and then check again before you take on a big job like this! You will be forever shattered if you make all your jobs this much hard work! Likewise, check with your suppliers just how things will be delivered give yourselves a fighting chance of getting the job done before you are both on the verge of collapse! Otherwise, I fear you will both be too shattered to enjoy the process. Have a good week❤
Omg you two! How hard was that! To quote your own vid - there must be a better way😧
It was a very hard day! Now that we've done it once we can definitely think of a few ways to make it better for next time! 😀
Hard work! Well done
Thank you!
Can’t believe it’s still sunny there 😎 You’re def a blessed pair 🧡👍 No nee for a gym either with that wheelbarrow 💪 For what it’s worth, you’re doing an amazing job here….. and baring you’re souls to the world 👌. C’mon Dan, watch what Andrea is doing😂 Outstanding and looking good. Plus you’re having fun too👏😀
Not sunny here anymore! We are working on a slight backlog of video 🤣 Thank so much for the compliments ❤️ This was a hard week so I'm glad we managed to laugh through it rather than cry 😂
Slide the screed board sideways while moving across the form. Finish off with a trowel and float to smooth the concrete. Finished product looks good
Thanks! We did return to do the trowel on the edges but hadn't used a float. I can see how that would have provided a cleaner smoother finish though!
Keep up the good work & your channel will grow.
Thank you, that's very kind :) We're enjoying sharing our journey :D
Moving forward. Good job.
Thank you! 😀
Coming along a a steady pace. A lot of hard work for both of you! Hope the weather stays dry so you can get your concrete pour completed.❤️
Thank you! And I agree, rain during a concrete pour would not be pleasant!! ❤️
👍👍
Brilliant that reminds me of the cottage that me and my dad built 😊
Thank you! That's really lovely. Did you build the cottage in Ireland? We drove the Wild Atlantic Way and there were so many stunning places to see.
Any pipes to install before pouring?
We had thought about running the service pipes through the cement but we didn't have confirmation of size of pipe for the borehole or the positioning they would require it to be in the shed yet, plus we ran short on time to organise and lay the conduit for it. I think next time we might try running the services through the base but this time they'll just be run through the side of the sheds.
Amazing work that you two are doing. Had to smile when Dan commented on ‘real world’ and ‘utube world’ 😬 There’s a phrase a good friend taught me when we build our camper, it’ll take longer and cost more’. And ‘it never takes half an hour’. Our self build camper took us the best part of 1700 hrs. When we start our next home build, I’ll not be putting a finish time on it (even though Vanessa will want one 😩). In will of course, like you, have a plan. Andrea - buy some ‘sealskin’ gloves and merino wool thermals. They will be worth the investment. Keep smiling as Spring is around the corner👌👍👏 cheers Paul
Thanks Paul! Yea it might sometimes look quick on our videos but everything takes so.much.time!! Nothing like it looks on UA-cam 😆 Thanks for the warm clothing recommendations, I'll definitely be checking those out!
@ 🧡💪👍
Excellent real world and learning progress. Lots of love put into every step. Chapeau. Lovely blue sky and leaves in the wind ending.
Learning something new through our mistakes every day now 😆
Why did you do sand over the type 1? Concrete wont key into the sand like it does with type 1, so its less secure
We were adding a DPM within the shuttering before pouring the concrete so needed the sand to prevent the MOT from puncturing the membrane.
Love what you guys are doing. Out of interest, why didn't you build the structure over the top of the bore hole?? Surely that would make life easier.
Thank you 🙂 A few reasons why we chose not to build over it but I think the main ones were because it would mean we'd have to make the shed even bigger to accommodate the borehole and also because we haven't had a confirmed layout of pump/storage/filter size/placement from the borehole company and didn't want to risk situating the borehole in an inconvenient place in the shed.
Caught up with this one, that looks hard. Will speak soon I hope. Stay strong!
It was hard work but wait until you see the next one! The job to come absolutely annihilated us! 😱
So pleased we have found your channel. I am from Ireland and my wife is from Mississippi. Thank you for letting us share in your adventures
Hello! Thank you for joining us on our journey 🥰 We have a lot more to share while we build our new home!
This is amazing. You guys are living the dream. Strongly recommend Kris Harbours channel if you are not already aware of his stuff.
Thank you! Not aware of that channel already, will check it out, thank you!
@abetterwayforus he sold up and bought some land in Wales too. Very knowledgeable, humble and all round good guy.
I just hate dealing with contractors. There are plenty of conscientious ones out there but in my experience they just want to cut corners and charge as much as possible. It's not their home so they dont give a hoot.
This has been our experience more often than not! Plus it's satisfying to have done the work yourself, not necessarily while you're doing it but afterwards when you're looking back on it 😆
Will enjoy watching your story unfold
Thank you! 🙂
Buy a blade for your strimmer and it will deal effortlessly with all those large weeds.
Yes that would have been very useful! We did consider it at the time but we don't have the budget to buy every tool so we pick and choose when to spend the money!
Beautiful surroundings! Seeing you strimming gives me nightmares! We've to do plenty of that. Good luck. Looking forward to future videos. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Hello back from Wales! The strimming was not the most fun but it helped we had just moved onto the land and had fresh eyes and energy for the work 😄 More videos to come soon! I've just checked out your channel (and subscribed) I've only had a chance to watch a couple so far but I love the bird house making and the pond you created 🥰
Wish you well but too many of these vlogs over past few years😮
Thank you. Lots of these are a great thing! It means lots of people decided to take up their own challenge and some risk and try to make their dream home! We are making these for our own "look back to remember" album and to share with family and friends. If you find it interesting then we'd love to have you follow our journey but we won't force you to. 🙂
Brilliant news on the water 👏👏👌
Thanks Paul! We were relieved they found some!!
I’ll bet. We’re fortunate that the spring well is already in place. Not sure when the chemical analytics were last checked. Sure with both your skills and cliff face learning curve, you’ll overcome any issues💪👍👏
How much does it cost to drill a well?
There are lots of different costs that go into the stages of having a borehole dug and installed. We are planning on going through this in more detail in a future video to explain.
Interesting but spoit by the unessary music.
I'm glad you found it interesting. Do you feel the music spoiled it because it was too loud or you don't like music in videos?
@@abetterwayforus I don't really like energetic music in videos. Prefer to watch it in a relaxing way. amazing how they bore for water. never seen it done before. on our property we just dug a deep pond which services the paddocks but not our drinking water. Have tanks for that. Great you got to drive the digger.
Thanks for the input, I'll try to make one of the next ones with some relaxing music 🙂 Watching the borehole being dug on our land was so interesting, and we are so glad they found water!
@@abetterwayforus id say its more that its too loud. Anyway, top result on the water.
A little softer, 20% I guess, nice music tho! (I am hearing challenged, use headphones)
Exciting times andrea , im looking forward to your Progress
Thank you so much! More to share soon! 😄
And so it begins isn’t it really exciting for you both 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
Thank you! Yes we are so excited! Seeing the borehole there waiting for us is such a big milestone 🥳
Exciting times 🎉
Hey Dave! Definitely! Lots of exciting steps to come as well :D
Excellent start. Living your dream! ❤
Thank you!! 😊
Great news about the borehole. Are you planning to set up a solar array - the location looks "just right" for one.
Thank you! Yes we are planning our solar array and are very excited about it 😁
Congratulations from Nepal!
Thank you :)
This is gonna be a fun to upcoming projects
Thank you 😀
Look forward to watchin your journey...
Thank you! 🙂
you guys doing great ,following your own dreams ,since this is the beginning i subscribed for being with you from the start to the end hopefully ,wish luck..
Thank you very much!
You have certainly attracted a healthy number of subscribers {supporters]. Congratulations on your determination and ambitious attitude which I am sure will lead to success.
Thank you so much for both of your very supportive comments. They mean a lot to us and I'm sure we'd benefit from further moral support down the road as we keep trying to build our new home :)
Excellent starter video, I am sure you will succeed and look forward to watching you do it.
Thank you so much, that's so kind! ❤️
👍👍
Thanks :)
Buy a small tractor, like a red or even a grey Massey Fergusson, with a slasher - life's too short for a strimmer and you'll need a tractor to deal with your land or get a couple of sheep and let them have-at-it. It's a stunning view but its going to be a lot of work - it certainly will be an adventure, but you're both young, so why not - give a crack! I look forward to seeing you and your home's progress. Good luck. 👍👍
Love to get a tractor one day. We are being careful about the big purchases we buy right now to try to stretch the money we have as far into the build as possible. For this first part of land a strimmer was, although slow, what we thought would be the best tool as far as price as well as we were constantly finding rocks, roof tiles, and other things that might have ruined a ride on mower or tractor attachment. Plus we have a lot to learn about tractors before we will feel comfortable enough to put that much money towards one :) Thank you so much for your support, we look forward to sharing more videos soon! 😁
Can I ask what you paid for the property, and how did you find it. Thanks.
We're going to do a video to talk about all the costs involved in buying the property, hopefully out in the next couple of weeks! We found our barn on Rightmove 🙂
That area looks so similar to where I grew up, just on the edge of the South Downs, between Worthing and Brighton. Live in the US now 😢.
We're very familiar with the Brighton area! It's very beautiful over there too. The seagulls there are particularly good at stealing chips :P
What a project! Free the end of the barnwall from the soil so you will have no moist problems. Good luck
Thank you! We are considering that, or solutions to deal with the hydrostatic pressure and water ingress. If we did go down the route of digging the barn away from the hill slightly it does involve getting planning permission first though.
Looks like a fun project! Barn doesn't need much , almost ready to move in. lol 👍😎 PS Do you know how old the barn is?
Almost done right? 🤣 We are pretty sure the barn is at least 200 years old and might be as much as 300 years! We would love to find out for sure some day.
@@abetterwayforus 😎
bit worried about foundational issues within the building.. some extra work might be needed
Absolutely! We have hired a structural engineer to work with us from the start. They are looking into everything from foundations to supporting walls to steel beams and everything in between. Not taking any chances there!
That was a great video. Good use of music. Did you ever find the owner of the cows?
Thank you so much! Yes we did :) It turns out a single farmer owns the land on both sides of us and the cows had jumped a short portion of fence we share. I'm happy to report the cows were returned safely to their proper field :D While we were fixing the fence the cows decided to walk towards us so we opened the gate and they just calmly walked through on their own :p
@@abetterwayforus cows are clever like that. If they like you they will visit again
