Penny Treat Retreat rep 5 Outside to Inside Oct 27
Penny transition to inside the house was smooth and she was comfortable
As well we walked into areas of the house where guests have never been and once again she felt safe
It is important to note that this is now looking very easy for Penny but if we think back in session 1 even when I had treats and she knew it she was NOT coming this close and moving this smoothly (and excitedly)
Equally important is when she zooms around the corner to find me standing so close -she had one small bark and her recovery was fast. Recovery is something we always look at and it is a key point as we rehab a dog. Yes they may still bark/react but take note how fast their recovery is. There are many more questions I can ask Penny - like working more with touch or sitting on the ground but she is also ready with me ,for the next step in Treat retreat which is 123 Go Say Hi

BAT 3 0 Lovely Leash Handling
Переглядів 1214 днів тому
Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT)is a protocol that helps dogs who struggle with fear/frustration and aggression around triggers. We set up a learning environment , one in which we "place" said trigger out at a distance where the dog is aware of it but not over threshold (defined as reacting ) Ideally we have the dog on a long line which gives freedom of movement and a sense of being off leash...

Treat Retreat a protocol for dogs who have concerns over people. In this video we have moved my location and in essence we are asking how she feels about me being there. New places , even a few feet away can have different answers. Penney quickly tells us she is fine with my new location and I quickly ask her numerous questions -questions that have taken several sessions for her to be comfortab...

As handlers we can often be impatient when trying to "fix" our dogs -we want change immediately and unfortunately when it comes to helping our dogs emotionally we need to move at their pace. This handler does a lovely job of conversing with her dog and asking him questions. The dog responds with his answer . #attachment It is a lovely tribute to this persons patience and the social bond they ha...

Treat Retreat leaning in How is this for you
Переглядів 30821 день тому
In Treat retreat , a protocol for dogs who are concerned about people. We are always asking "how is this for you?" In this video I ask Penney this very question when I lean forward into her, which is forward social pressure. This is often deemed rude and threatening by some dogs. If you look at the rep before I lean look at the ease and comfort at which she approaches me. There is no hesitancy....
Treat Retreat fear of people /folding in movement

Treat Retreat is a protocol for dogs concerned about people In this video we are folding in movement We slice the variables in slowly and move at the pace of the dog We are always asking how is this for you? The dog will answer and as trainers we need to be keen observers of their body language as that will tell us the answer Where does the dog stop ? How are they standing? How do they respond ...

Musical Toys Relationship Building

As owners we often get caught up in the idea we must teach basic manners -that come sit stay down are the end all be all. While it is true we do need to teach these skills when we get a new puppy we need to focus on relationship building outside the scope of our traditional thinking. Take the time to bond with your puppy, let them explore and observe the world from a safe distance. In this vide...
Reinforcement for my dog

The dog decides what is most reinforcing as we teach new skills Think of it as your dogs pay check and as we teach new behaviors the dogs paycheck must be valuable enough that the dog will want to repeat the behavior. GREAT QUESTION

glad it helped!! Thanks for commenting
Fantastic, Jennie!
well thank you my mentor <3
🥰
Well done! So happy to see a big dog on a harness!
Nice recovery! Very helpful to have multiple people to help manage and deal with the situation, as well as support the dog. Curious, is his reactivity out of fear, frustration/excitement or both?
leash frustration! Those sudden environmental are a bugger!
I love that you share the products that you use. With the Lickimats, West Paws etc one knows that you are getting a quality product without toxins. I've often seen similar products in the cheap shops (I guess they're called 1 dollar shops or something similar in the US?) but they are probably made of petrochemical products or contain other toxins which could be endocrine disruptors. Very tempting at the price but I think it's safer to pay 5 to 10 times the price for a known quality brand where you know what the materials are.
Very cool! I'm curious about the purpose of the hand being out? Could you explain that please?
Sure! Under my studies with @Avanti Dog Training we add the hand as a context cue. It becomes the visual cue for the dog to know and understand we would like focus on us. We of course set up the learning environment so that the dog can succeed. Sharon Carroll teaches this class at Fenzi Dog Sport Academy. FDSA next session starts June 1/22 however I do not think ODE is offered this coming term. Keep an eye out for it -it is very good
@@jenniemurphy0107 Thank you! I was also wondering if you could recommend the best pattern games for reactive and anxious dogs? I know of the 1-2-3 game
@@kat200214 you should check out Control Unleashed - I guess you have heard of the them since you know the 123 pattern game. That is a great one for transitioning /moving . For tight spaces I really like the Up Down Pattern Game
Thanks!! I'm going to teach this to my pup, and then see if it can help him calm down when we're getting ready to go for a walk.
Lovely!
Jennie, I want to thank you for taking the time to record and post your awesome training videos for us! Your instructions to your clients are exactly right in my opinion, which makes your videos a wonderful resource for me to share with my dog clients. A million thanks!!!
thank you so much
Go Bennie go!! So much fun to watch him work it out..
thanks for taking the time to post , I appreciate
That's the bowl I use for Lefty!
That is the most important training to do! My Chihuahua puppy is deaf.
Thank you very much. I’m struggling hard with this currently, specially because there’s a neighbor dog that’s also very reactive and every time our door opens/closes there’s an instant barking contest with their dog and mine 😓 also there’s only one elevator and cramped spaces so I can’t really prevent walking into people in confined areas. Walking is increasingly stressful, but I know that if I don’t do them frequently it’s just gonna make it worse. Thank you for the video
I am so glad it was helpful to you, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for posting this video! It clearly demonstrates how to teach the basic skill, and what it can look like as distractions are added. Love the loose leash clearly evident. A key element that you captured is that the dog initiates the treat delivery by reorienting to you. Well done Jennie!
Why thank you Susan , I appreciate you taking the time to reply
What a good boy! My own frustrated greeter still has problems with becoming barking lungy when he sees dogs on our walks. So we've been using a combo of CU and BAT to help him navigate his world a little easier.
She loves her toys. Thanks Jennie. It is great to have her home!

You are an awesome trainer, have seen such an improvement in Theo. Thank you!
What a lovely clear alert!
My dog isn’t interested in treats when on a walk. He does like his toys though. Could you suggest a way that I could use toys, as quickly as treats, to reward this behaviour?
If your dog won't take treats outside, they are likely over-threshold and you would want to ensure they aren't too stressed to learn first before tackling any reactivity. Once you've gotten a good hold on their threshold, teaching a dog to eat food outside is like any other behavior you would train. Start inside and gradually increase difficulty so, maybe dinner is by the door to outside a few times or we have a meal on the back porch. See when your dog stops taking food as a cue you are too close to the trigger/they are too aroused and work further back. I'd also look into The Play Way by Amy Cook.
I would look at the reasoning behind the not wanting to eat treats on a walk. I would want to know can he eat treats inside the home and if the answer is yes then we need to figure out why not outside . Is the environment to stimulating or are you too close to things that concern him? Can toys work ....yes yet it is much harder and they can raise arousal /excitement in the dog which is not what we are really looking for. Toys also make it harder to use this structured predictable pattern
HI Jeannie, can you tell me what the PVC is being used for. Seems a bit uncomfortable for you and the dog.
yes it was awkward, the dog had a serious bite history and this was an assessment . Not something we continued utilizing . However for the owners nerves and for added safety we used for this early session. Despite it this was the most successful time this owner had seen her dog in the presence of other dogs. Thx for watching and nice to hear from you Dennis
YAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!! SO TRUE!!!!!! Great work. Love this video
Interesting
Looks great! Love the cue.
Is she training the dog or the girl?
Both. The girl needs to know proper movement so the dog doesn't feel threatened or fearful.
