A short video I shot over a weekend while visiting Erich Dokoupil. I've known Erich for quite some time and have visited his railway on a handful of occasions, Probably not enough. The Layout is probably the largest private HO layout I know of in South Africa. The Layout is how Erich see the Union Pacific Railway near the town of Chyenne. this is the stamping ground of the Big Boy A link to Her...
12th Model Railroad Convention in Bloemfontein

This is a video of the 12th Biannual Model Train Convention, which used to be held in South Africa. Since this film was made, many more of the white-haired ladies and gents who were involved in attending this convention have passed away. I also believe the Bloemfontein Model Train club does not exist anymore. If you happen to live in Bloemfontein, please pay Dream Trains a visit. (Please note t...

I love Lima model trains, they are simple and easy to get running
At least hornby buy lima.
Ja nee, things are bad out there, but a man's house is his castle!
Nice 😊
Thanks 😊
Beautiful video and beautiful trains!
Thank you very much!
Nice running session🎉
I really didn't know the SA railways was so destroyed like I see here in the video? That's so sad to see! Still have my Lima set in a original box, I had no idea that it was that rare. It's a great looking model, and one of the better Lima ever made. Thanks a lot for the informative video. Greetings from a cold snowy Sweden.
Its actually unbelievable as to how much the infrastructure has been destroyed. Just today, I heard that the planned long-distance trains that were planned to take people to their holiday destination (December 2023) were canceled due to the unavailability of locomotives! (I'm a South African, I was born in South Africa and I can't understand the country at all!). In one of my pictures taken in the video even the reinforcing bard used to strengthen concrete railway sleepers have been removed for there scrap iron value. ua-cam.com/video/-mIqFY132ds/v-deo.htmlsi=RN7Vvl3ZXOeO5ok_
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 So sad to see what's happening. Sadly there are going the same way in our country. Still there is a long way until railways get destroyed, but who knows if the happening here lately will go in the same direction in some decades? I really love the SA railways and the amazing landscape they go through. Luckily there are many historical videos left to watch.
I still have my Lima suburban set in perfect condition in the original box after all these years.
Nice some times they do fetch ridiculous prices, have you ever taken it out to run?
Me too!! 🌹😁👍
Another great video!
Thankyou for the compliment.

What a wonderful convention to have gone to, good to see the modelling scene going strong
I'm on the fence as to how active the model railway community is. Yes, there are some active people, but they are all not very young. Most model trains are expensive, and the cost is usually out of reach for many people. In 2018, the last convention was cancelled, and the wheeld came off. we haven't had a convention since.
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 Sorry to hear the state of the modelling scene isn’t doing to well but still good to see a snippet of an event.
This is quite a sad video for me, shortly after the convention, my dad, Louis van Wyk passed away. Watching it now, there are many of these modelers who are not with us anymore, to name a few, Johan Leeflang, Andre Kritszinger, Robin Kerr to name but a few.
I know as I watched this movie, I also had the same thoughts that many people in this video are now nolonger with us. It was a very memorable convention, and I thought that it might be nice for those who were there to watch this video again before this video thrown away and forgotten.
And even the conventions are no more, I really miss them.@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786
I wonder how LOADSHEDDING affects the electric trains in South Africa ?
After 2019, much of the rail infrastructure was plundered. It is only now that we see some electric traind running again. Unfortunately, I do not live anywhere near a fulsize railway, so I can not comment on what I have seen. I think they do run even during load sheading as Transnet would bye electricity directly from eskom. Next time there is load sheading, I will make a detour on my way home to see if the trains still run. Thanks for your interest in my video, TonyNZ
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 Thanks for your offer to check out if LOADSHEDDING does shutdown the Metro trains. As a 5 year old I used to travel from Diep River station to Kenilworth everyday to attend Michael Oak Primary. Bet a 5 year old would not attempt that today. So sad .Love your model trains and your set up. I have a fellow workmate here in NZ who also has model trains.
@@tonynz9954 A friendly Hi from the "sulphur town" I have quite a few Lima SAR sets, but was not able to purchase all of them before they disappeared for good.
Hi John By "sulphur town " are you referring to Rotovagus ? @@johnmeneses7039
Load shedding does effect metro rail there power gets cut without them being told. I was on a train that could not proceed further due to a section of the line experiencing load shedding.
Lindo de mais
Where did you get the retro metrorail model train?
I have had it in my collection for quite some time.
I still have my suburban train set in its boxes
Neil you are still a lucky person, do you take it out occasionally to give it some exercise? I hope you found the video interesting, do you have any other SAR Lima models?
Wow! I always wanted a Suburban, but they went out of production before I could lay my hands on a set. Wanna sell?
I had that 79/80 catalogue, very well-read! it's when i was last into model railways. new interest now, more collecting than anything....
I also enjoyed looking through the catalogs which came with the models, I wish I had kept some of them but like the boxes the toys were kept in as they got tatty they have been thrown out. fortunately someone had the foresight to scan his catalogs and share them. if you are interested have a look here. mmiwakoh.de/Eigene%20Webs/lima-modellbahn/Kataloge%20en.htm
Nice video. I remember these 5M2As from my childhood - but I don't really feel all that nostalgic for them. Their time has come and gone. There is more than enough of the stock lying around if anyone has the money to conserve some - but I suspect nobody will care. While we remember them fondly - the majority of their passengers over the years will more likely remember them as dirty and unsafe - due to the lack of care shown to them over more recent decades. I don't believe that the future of SA railways is as bleak as you make out however - corridors are being recovered and the XTrapolis Mega sets are an excellent successor to the old Union Carriage & Wagon stock. I read recently that new contracts were even started to refurbish some of the older stock to be used while the Megas are phased in.
I would agree with you in some respects, they were filthy and unpleasant memories for many south Africans, what little money is available could be used to keep other heritage alive in this country. how ever it is part of our history and while there are some examples in good condition we should at least keep one for the future.
Thank you so much for sharing this trip down memory lane and also adding and sharing the cross references to the prototype. Very much appreciated.
My pleasure enjoy it now as tomorrow it will be gone.
Your opening shots reminded me of the South Coast line in the dense vegetation.
There ste one or two pictures in the video taken on the South Coast in the 1970s. The pictures were taken at Amamzintoti, There is a steam engin pulling the suburban train set.
Love it. Nostalgia par excellence. Pity it has been ruined and broken down. Good luck with that tribute model.
Well put together
Thank you sir for this video. I literally cried when seeing this.
Very nice video & history lesson !
Leon thanks, enjoy it now while you can because tomorrow it may be gone.
it was great visit on the ground too, Thanks Andrew for sharing your passion and creativity.
Thanks Christopher I really appreciate that you had to come and see the railway.
Very cool presentation - interesting locomotive!
If only toys could speak, or did it I wonder what this model is doing now?
Quite excellent. Great video! 💪💥
Thank you! 👍 I am glad you enjoyed it, I am now inspired to do my next video which should be coming out soon.
Very nice Andrew.
Glad you enjoyed it, I am working on my next video I hope you will watch it.
Sweet layout! Do you run on battery?
Dear Michael, My appologies for the late reply. The railway is run using an old controller dating back to the 1980s. every time I use the railway I have an extension lead from the house into the garden. when not in use the controller extension lead and all the models get packed away inside the house for safe keeping.
Thanks for the reply! You must do quite a lot of track cleaning!
It takes about an hour to set everything up.
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 I’m absolutely fascinated by your layout! I’ve often wondered about H0 in the garden. I always decided that it would be too taxing for the materials. I assumed you ran on batteries, because I figured it would be impossible to keep the track clean. Do you cover the track when not in use? I know JHB is fairly dry, but don’t you get rust on the track? I don’t have space indoors for a layout at the moment, but you’ve got me thinking... The weather here (Vienna) is definitely not as clement as down your way.
@@michaelsmulik the railway is under cover when not in use, we get hot sun which isn't kind to the plastic railway sleepers. I use pico coad 100 track which is made from nickle silver which doesn't. Rust like steel track. If you keep your track plan simple it will avoid a lot of problems. I do ha e points which can cause se problems. But I sure if I put some form of stay alive I'm the models that would prevent models stalling on the points.
A good video about a generic model made by LIMA. Sad to see the old LIMA offices and factory closed though but that was progress, apparently. The running shots were very nice in the garden there. Thanks for posting. Cheers! Keep Well there!
Thanks for the compliment. I find it quite difficult to do these moving shots as I crouch over the railway with the phone in hand chasing after the model. When it works it is quite rewarding.
Omg hiiiiiiii ❤
Well done on a really well thought out mini documentary on a much loved & unloved Lima Model.
It was my pleasure. I am working on the next one. This one won't be on a very well known model. But I hope it will be as informative.
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 I've not seen anyone add the "red" ? light on the front of the 5E model?
@@MrJohnNel I suppose with an extremly small LED or many fibre optical cables added together you could add something how ever if it is dine badly it would ruin the model.
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 I have a spare body somewhere so will experiment
@@MrJohnNel would you go so far as to correcting the errors? or would that be to much? to drill out a hole and add a small red LED would be a good idea. you might need to keep the dome effect of the lenz of the light buy using a clear plastic insert and putting the LED behind the body, (there could be a UA-cam video in how you did the alteration.

My son (Ben Philip) in Grade 2 loved this. Last year we went to the miniature train exhibition at Randburg High on Saturday and Sunday.. Once lockdown is over, can we arrange to visit this? He has been crazy about trains ever since I can remember.
With pleasure I would welcome you. Try loo king up Blairgowrie forest railway on Face book.
I like the music....... :) and it's a great video too.
The music is great. I think it is strange how it worked out using the TOTO song which actually worked well with the ending. I loved the way the Gignot worked out as well I never taught it would work with model trains but I think I did a good job. I now have a whole year to think about the music for the next movie. Thank you for your great track. I think the Welsh Male Voice choir could do a wonder full arrangement with Africa by TOTO.
Love it
Dear Beth I am really glad you took the time to watch the movie. I hope some day when I open up the railway you might find the time to come an visit.
@@blairgowrieforestrailwayan2786 I would love that
Coaches sound nice over the crossover
How many mistakes did l make?
This was a lot of fun to watch. Good job with your model railway. Quick question: What gauge is your model railway? I know most people do G Scale outside, but yours looks HO Scale? (Unless I'm mistaken).
Dear Patrick. Yes you are correct it is 16mm. 16mm track is easily obtainable in South Africa so it was an obvious choice I also thaught of running other scales on my railway HO, OO, SN3 and O guage 2"
That is henry with anna
I'm not sure. It certainly does look like it though. I hope you did enjoy watching my short movie.
Merry Christmas Andrew You Have gained another subscriber. great out door layout you have Andy......all the best Tony
Thankyou Tony
Is the power to the track or are you using radio control for your loco's ?
The power for the locomotives is picked up by the track just as it would have been if you set up you track on the floor in the living room.I was going to use a buss wire under the layout, so far I haven't needed to use it. I'm hoping to wire up a dcc controller to the railway some day.
Awesome and quite a few good tips - thanks for posting
