I listen to the song and don't cry,but when I try to SING it I burst out in tears...

If you look at this in a religious standpoint as a few others in the comments are it seems to be a description of someone who did grow up in a Christian environment only to find their faith again later in life. Water basically represents baptism and the days Christ/Jesus went without food or water as Satan tempted Him in the desert
