You Can Grow Your Flower Dream From the Ground UP! Natalie Geehr of The Farmer Florist
Starting small is perfectly okay! Every grand dream begins with a single step, and this week’s episode beautifully illustrates that journey. It’s a reminder that you don’t need vast resources to cultivate your passions and watch them bloom.
My guest this week is Natalie Geehr, owner of The Farmer Florist. Natalie began her journey right in her backyard in Fresno, CA. When she outgrew that space, she took a leap and leased a 1/4 acre-an old horse arena in her parents’ backyard. It took some convincing but perseverance won. Despite feeling a little imposter syndrome in such a thriving agricultural area, she’s fully embracing the journey toward her own flower farm.
What I find truly inspiring about Natalie is her commitment to her vision. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the challenges and comparisons that come with starting something new. But Natalie shows us that staying true to our passions-no matter the size of our starting point-can lead to incredible growth.

Wow. So much humility and inspiration. I love Jean-Pascals story. It gives me hope as a small home studio floral designer who came late to the industry. I also take only small local weddings and events because it’s just me and whoever I can recruit when needed. Also I work pt at a local flower shop. I’m doing what I can for now at 66 and I love what I’m doing no matter how small the job is. Thank you for the great outlook and practical advice.

I live in an area similar to hers. Very hot summers. I would like to know what flowers she grows in the heat. Im a small flower farmer and its hard to find flower farmer’s who get hot temps in the summer months to share experiences. Im a newbie, 3rd year growing, still learning and experimenting. I live in South western Utah, right on the border with Arizona and Nevada. If you drew a line from Fresno, straight east to utah, you would hit where I live. We also have a small collective with great people to work with. Appreciated your comments.

Poke leafs added to Kale or Spinich make it delicious. I used to freeze a cup of poke leafs that were blanched and add one cup to a cooking of other greens. I have deep fried poke stems. I have boiled the poke berries for arthritis. So many good uses.

Maybe terracotta pots can be wiped regular with watering, maybe initially before a good wash and then coating thinly the outside with a hydroscopic formula like rain-x?

Love this. I ama hobby grower in northeast Florida, and the thing I find most challenging is the summer rainfall. Maybe that’s part of why you’re taking a summer production break. I find that I can grow some beautiful blooms but the daily rainfall makes mildew inevitable and the plants look like trash. Additionally, the heavy rain makes staking a challenge.

Lovely conversation to listen to. You asked some great questions too.Really interesting always to hear about how flower and plant growers go about selling to florists. It's really nice to hear these stories of having good relationships with local florists. Especially as a niche flower grower. Salpiglossis means trumpet tongue. New to me, I looked it up and was surprised to see it's in the solanaceae family i.e. nightshades along with potatoes and tomatoes.
