Muchas gracias!
Hello! I'm wanting to start doing woodcuts. I've been a huge fan of the woodcut illustration style of art my entire life. Do you have any tips to get started? Or tutorials on how to do the artwork itself before the carving?
Sorry it took me so long to respond! The way I learned was by carving linoleum. Wood has a lot of complexities and I wouldn’t recommend starting there because you then have to know the art of sharpening! My process is much different than most others because I don’t draw out my tonal values. Instead I use an approach more like a tattoo artist with my drawing in a simple outline form and I map out my different tonal values as I go. Just remember the you have to get use to thinking in the negative as if you were drawing on a black piece pf paper with a white marker. I hope that helps lol!
Question! What is your opinion on wood putties for "fixing" carving mistakes?
If using wood you can use a good wood filler no problem. Linoleum not so much. My preferred method is not to use a filler, but instead improvise and make it look as if the accident was intentional. Doesn’t always work but that’s my first step.
Video a bit useless because few engravers have this kind of machine 🤷🏻♂️
Understood, however the people who seek the best results will invest into thing’s like this to separate themselves from the crowd.
@Cchouette the video is clearly titled with how to do it *using the Tormek system*. If you didn’t want to see it done *with the Tormek system*, then you shouldn’t have watched it/clicked away if it’s not relevant/useful to you. Or to put it another way, “comment [is] a bit useless because the video’s purpose is clear and no one is being made to watch”
Any grinding wheel will be similar. This one is slow and wet. But a fine wheel and constant quenching in water (so you don't overheat the steel. When you can't touch it its getting hot and needs cooling). You can roll the tool by hand with practice. See Paul Sellers video. Watch videos on sharpening woodworking gouges of any kind. Block printing tools are just little versions of bigger tools. Speedball cutters are good steel and can be used on wood when sharpened.
I just cannot get my head around this technique. I guess one way to work it out is to actually do one (as opposed to just trying to think it out.
😂 Yes it is very confusing! Practice makes progress!
Beautiful press and well done making a 'challenging build' project easy. I built myself a small table top etching press a few years ago and have been using it mostly for linocuts.
I had absolutely no idea how complex and painstaking this is, utterly astonishing
I enjoyed your video very much. Please make more. You are a great teacher.
Oh please post a video about tonal values.
Good to know. Good idea. Thanks
Amazing job! You’re an inspiration.
Thank you so much!
I really appreciated this thorough and super clear demo. I am embarking on a carving adventure and you are my compass!
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy the journey!
Hello. Cool video. Good info. Question. Care for blocks. How to cleanup after ink. You just can’t wet wood. Care after inking.
Always make sure you don’t over-ink your blocks. At the end of your printing process run a few more prints with some sacrificial paper to get excess ink off. Let the ink dry and you can come back to it and print it again whenever.
Thann you so much! I’ve been looking for guidance on how on earth such delicate lines could be achieved with woodcut
Glad it was helpful!
This is so amazing! Brilliant artwork and love all the detail. I never knew this technique existed. What wood was this carved onto? Thanks, I really enjoyed the video.
Thank you very much! It’s an Alder body with a .25” hard maple top for carving.
Wow so detailed
Awesome! Look's like batmobile from the 60's show. I love it!
Outstanding!
So good. Love the line work. I’d love to know more about the process when it comes to shading. Do you sketch in Procreate?
I wish I had been introduced to such delicate work as a younger woman. I could have done that well...and it looks so beautiful! Great job and I hope you inspire lots of new artists!!!
Alex could you please advise me where can I get a very tiny “u” tools like the one you use it? Thanks in advance
Impressive work.
Beautiful craftsmanship
Thanks a lot!
How was this made?
It was hand carved with gouges and knives.
What chisels should I get to start I’m poor keep in mind. I want to use this to make myself more free from working for a boss
I would start carving linoleum first. This was you can buy any cheap chisels and practice before you get into carving wood. You can get a cheap set online around $10-20.
That detail is nuts Alex. Nice work!
Thanks a lot!
Which printing press you are using in this video? Or do you have any advice for specific printing press brand for woodcut, linocut or itching. 🙏 Thank you so much Alex 🌻
This is a Blick 999 Model II. It’s a great press!
Buenaaaa
Where to get this set of grinder as u have it?
You can buy it on the Tormek website😉
I recognize that: Broadway and Lawrence. Very nice.
Forever grateful for this! I felt like carvers were keeping some secrets from me that I’d only gain knowledge about right before I died. Thank you for the tips and tricks. I work on linoleum and plan to use my knife for those tight areas.
Awesome! I’m so glad this helped you!
Is that the Kerb 9 tool shown at the 0:32 mark? Would you consider listing the tools you use? You've inspired me to try your technique for myself. Thank you.
What would it take to get you up to Eric and Pam Bealer's property and show us how to use the press?
Please send me an email. I would love to travel and do something there! Email: alex@oldschoolalex.com
17:15 oh the paper test? Hold my beer while I slice HALFWAY though a piece of paper! Show off!! Hahah
Hold my beer! Lol Thanks!
Duuuuuude!!
Haha thanks a lot!
Excellent work, congratulations and many more impressions.
Thanks a lot!
Small carving tools, especially V tools, are always a challenge but can be managed several ways besides a Tormek system. Squaring the end and paying close attention to that fine flat on the end when grinding the bevel is a pro tip. If you aren't careful you can grind away a lot of the tool trying to get the right geometry and sharpness. Take your time and don't get in a hurry during the grinding process. Don't forget to strop/hone for the final edge and avoid grinding until absolutely necessary. Good video.
Thanks a lot! Good knowledge in your comment.
Nice job. A better explanation than those from Tormek themselves. One point though, the leather honing wheel is fairly soft and a few degrees either way will remove the Sharpie marks, better to actually measure. Question - what honing medium do you use?
Yes I agree about the honing wheel. They have a new composite honing wheel that is much denser. I have found it to be much better than the leather one. Thanks!
