Moments in Angling Essence
Приєднався 2 лип 2021
James Franks is an Angler based in South Oxfordshire, he enjoys the Specimen Angling approach and will target certain species at different times of the year in order to break his own records.
"The whole point of my channel is to try and capture something I feel we've lost in recent Angling films which is the simple things, like just simply being by the water, noticing the sound of nature, and that special moment when we finally connect with our quarry. It is these simple little things that I feel make up the essence of Angling and I hope to portray that, at least in some form throughout my videos".
"For me fishing is my meditation, and it's become quite obvious to me that - I need this!"

Just read the rest of the comments ? answered DOH getting on a bit sorry
Just found your channel nice vid and my type of fishing, can I ask where did you get your rucksack / stool from it looks a bit bigger and a bit more comfy than mine ,hope you read this couldn't find any vids more recent tia
Can anyone tell me where all the carp went from the somerton crossing stretch, cheers
I remember catching Ruff at Kingston on the Thames, I loved the purple eyes
I used to catch loads of gudgeon on the Thames at Sunbury many years ago. The biggest one I caught was just over 4oz wich was a monster, my one and only true specimin fish. I wish they would have grown to 20lbs. Fond memories indeed, thanks for the video.
Mate, you could lose the "artistic" intro.... no-one would miss it! xxx
Culham Bridge - you're right, it was the original bridge into Abingdon from the East. A cavalier captain was shot on it during the Civil War. It is said that his ghost walks the bridge at night.
I never knew that! Thanks!
I’m going there this Sunday to pike fish I’ve never fished there so I’m watching all these videos for as much info as possible
Good luck! I think there are bigger pike in there!
How did you get on bud? Heading down in the morning went over last weekend and blanked not really sure which lake to go on tomorrow
@@ashleythomas4647 I came third with a total of 12lbs 10 oz, not too bad for my first match.
@@ashleythomas4647 I was on manor lake but only 9 fish were caught all day between 13 anglers so it’s not that easy. I just held mine down near the margins drop off and I caught within 5 minutes
The fish are great but the loud music is annoying so quit half way through.
I love Gudgeon.. also loved as a lad catching under rocks, stone loach and Millers Thumb ...with a net .
That brings back memories the Thames i used to fish Wallingford years ago like about 30 years ago, live in NZ now but still have fond memories of fishing in the UK thank you great video..
Thank you 😊
Yep i live there, fishings brilliant
Fantastic choice of music ! Thankyou .
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Ive just started fishing again and i live just 10 minutes away from these swims so going to give them a try
Cool! Hope you catch some!
A personal message. Well done. You've managed to capture a hint of what gentle coarse fishing can be. The music you've chosen (at least to start ) also fits. With your apparent mind-set you would/could easily be seduced into crossing by Narnian time travel to 1955. Provided you avoid the easy access draw of wannabe groups, eschewing the more obvious tat of modernity would complete your joy. Of course, it's a delusional bubble that exists, can only exist, in parallel. Few really get it, but you might. Think Kings Cross platform 9 3/4, but made real for you. But maybe I'm reading you incorrectly.
Thanks! I guess I was trying to capture peace and serenity and just being there is what it's all about, if I can create an emotional response to it then my message is clear 😊. I didn't see an wardrobes that day though! 😄
@@momentsinanglingessence855 An excellent response. But do consider that peek through that wardrobe if you want to find an additional dimension. There are those who might offer a guiding hand.
Hello - thank you for the these videos. I live in SC and was wondering if you knew of the SC weir pools are free fishing or if they're on the SCAC ticket? I heard free (on Facebook, or at least the swim overlooking the hydro thing) but thought you'd be likely to know. Thanks mate.
Hi there, the weir pools are included on the SCAC indeed! I live in SC too so might see you on the bank.
@@momentsinanglingessence855 Thanks! Yep maybe see you down there!
Love the film mate I used to fish all round there with my late father was a member of Sutton Courtney club have moved Away now but just retired so am going to come and have a days fishing there bring back child hood memories tight lines
Thanks mate! There's still good Bream and Chub fishing on that stretch!
Fabulous fish well done!
Thanks, it was a nice surprise
The ruffe. is that the same as a fish we used to call a Pope?
Yes it is 👍
Cheers mate! I hear there's some whopping Roach in the Ebro, I know its mostly famous for Cats.
Another well made video ...every time i watch one of your videos its a trip down memory lane i grew up in Cholsey and then moved to Dicot and fished / worked all along Old Father Thames all my life untill moving to Spain
A good way of attracting it is to stir the sand in shallow waters. The reason there aren't so many is they need good water quality. Used to fish these here in France 15-20 years ago in a river called l'Yonne. Best served fried 😅
You're right about the water quality, the Thames isn't so clear anymore.
Another nice video James and what a lovely spot on the river to fish. I used to fish on the Thames at Runnymede in the 70s and get loads of bleak, gudgeon and ruffe. Thanks
Thanks mate! There are still plenty of bleak around for sure.
Fond memories of catching Gudgeon on the river as a kid. Haven't seen one for years. Thanks for the reminder. Happy fishing 🎣
Cheers mate! Glad it bought back some memories!
You built so much anticipation before revealing that last dragon fly! Turned out great 🙂 A lot of colourful looking insects. It's easy to forget how much insect variety there is
Good catch
Super video, nice good Perch, lovely fishing. Well done. 👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
Nice video, thank you.
Thank you
Lovely bit of filming mate! belting stripeys, you captured the moment beautifully! I promised myself a specimen perch hunt this winter but never managed it after getting waylaid by Grayling! looking forward to more! 👍👍
Thanks mate! I'm gonna try and follow it up with some more Perch videos on the canal, if they show up that is! 😄. I haven't targeted Grayling this last year, it's very much a species I want to pursue again.
A lovely, evocative video of a grey winters day’s perching👏👏
Thanks Tim
The dog 😂
Another really enjoyable film, well done. I’m not too far from there, normally fish the local Gt Ouse, what ticket do I need for that area of the Thames next winter?
Thanks James, I still haven't fished the Great Ouse, what's the Barbel numbers like on there atm? because I'm tempted to try for them during summer. The stretch I'm fishing is around Sutton Courtenay, you can buy a day ticket or yearly permit from Didcot Angling.
Good video 🤝
Lovely video, really enjoyed watching your session on the Thames and rewarded with a 6+ well done.
Thank you 😊, it was nice to get one 6 this year! I actually went out yesterday and had a couple of 4s and 10.4 Barbel on bread, a fish of which I've now caught 3 times 😄. I watched your video this morning actually! Looks like you had a great day! 👍
Beautiful mate lovely fish video and location 👍
Thanks Karl
@@momentsinanglingessence855 anytime mate i caught one the other day 2lb 14 and i was gutted because ive never had a 3lber i have had stacks off fish 1lb to 2lb fish. Thing is these days all these videos are about monster size perch which obviously we all dream off but people forget a fish off a pound and a half to two pound is still a good fish and im still happy when i catch them 👍 great video
Absolutely! Any Perch over a 1lb is a great fish! I only managed just over 2lb last autumn but may try for them again on the canal during spring! Well done on the 2.14lber! 👍
Lovely video
Thanks John
Luv the chub vlog, would luv to c another Barbel film. R there any parts of the river/weirs fishable for pike yet?
Thanks Jamie. Unfortunately the Barbel only show up when I'm not filming 🙃. The river has steadied out now and is clear, I'm thinking Abingdon weirs is worth a go for Pike, I would imagine they'll be holding up in the large slack area close to the lock but I'd fish close to the creases off the main flow.
Absolutely loved this video, it really captured all I love about winter chubbing ! Good stuff !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Are you going to try the channel this year?
What channel are you referring to?
@@momentsinanglingessence855 Thames channel next to the port meadow. Not UA-cam channel
I may do at some point. Might see you there sir
I'm probably going to fish the Bullstake and Hinksey stream tomorrow if you want to join
@@momentsinanglingessence855 I fished bullstake near bolty road yesterday. Love to give it another go, what time will you be there?
Lovely vlog old boy
Thanks Marc
Great session. Two lovely chub. I have the Shakespeare version of the ruckbag. Really good for stalking. Lovely video.
Thanks Mark, and yeah I had the Shakespeare one before, in some ways it is a better rucksack
Superb video another couple of cracking chub! I keep meaning to give that stretch a try. I will have to get down there before the end of the season. Tight lines.
Thanks Matthew! Hope you get a biggie when you do!
Great video, well done. Can I ask what make your rucksac/stool is thanks
Thanks Steve. It's by Crafty Rabbit www.craftyrabbitengland.co.uk/product/folding-backpack-chair/ You may need to add a couple of strong cable ties to the the lower part of the frame if you're going to pack it though as it comes loose, but it's a great seat.
Had a 5lb+ up at folly bridge today, the river is lovely. Another week without rain *touch wood* and we could be in for a great weekend next week. Tight lines
Well done on catching the 5+ 👍
Some lovely fish there and it looks like a beautiful spot.
I'd like to ask what chair/rucksack are you using, as it looks perfect for roving
Hi where is this lake?
Nice fish but you don’t hold scales like that as it will give you a false reading.
Thanks for the reminder John, I don't usually hold them that way but I think we were panicking at the time to catch it all on camera 😀
Nice video, it's good to see some local spots on UA-cam! I'm a new member of Sutton Courtanay so maybe see you on the bank some day. There's very little information online about the club. Do you know if any barbel are being caught at the moment. I hear there was an 18lb and a 13lb caught from Abington Weir recently. I've never caught one but crossing my fingers for one this autumn or winter. Tight lines.
Thanks mate! I think with the river being so up and coloured I'd say anywhere where the rubbish is collecting atm, I did have a couple of Barbel back in September from up near Culham Bridge where they have created swims but haven't fished the river for a little while. Tight lines.
@@momentsinanglingessence855 thanks for the tips. I will give it a try. I hope you manage to get back out in the river soon, I enjoy your videos.
Nice 2lb Zander! No ways that's 4lb mate
Well it was bigger and heavier than it looked on camera but would have settled for a pound Z on the day 😄
