MM x Shirasagi - Making Cherry Wood Tumblers in Japan
Located in the densely forested foothills surrounding the hot spring town of Yamanaka Onsen - you will find Shirasagi. Employing a small team of local craftspeople, this third generation workshop continues the tradition of producing high quality Yamanaka Shikki (lacquerware) that the region has become renowned for over the past 400 years.
We could not be more proud to present this collaboration with Shirasagi and to share this traditional craft expressed through the form of the MM Tumbler.

Nestled in the mountainside above Yamaguchi is Meizen Gama, a small family run kiln dedicated to producing high quality traditional Hagi-yaki, lead by the incredible Kiyoshi Yamato. Utilising Daido-tsuchi, a treasured local clay from outside neighbouring Hofu, each tumbler is thrown atop a kick wheel before being glazed using locally available natural materials. For those unfamiliar with Japane...
Neriage Porcelain Throwing with Tomoyuki Hoshino
Переглядів 485 місяців тому
In Tomoyuki’s words - “The charm of clay lies in its plasticity, It transforms as I touch it, and at the same time I feel a part of myself melting into it through my fingertips.” Handcrafting each vessel with a calm confidence, Tomoyuki’s work feels self-assured of its direction. The shapes, colours and surfaces that transpire reflect this and challenge the expectations that result from traditi...
Making a Glaze From an Icelandic Wild Clay - Klaki Part One
Переглядів 536Рік тому
Montmorillonite clays are structurally different to the kaolinite clays we often search for when we forage for wild clay. Making ceramics solely from them is not possible but they are highly valued for their incredible absorption properties with bentonite being the most commonly known. As an ingredient, it is a quiet hero in the ceramic world - utilised often in small quantities within the reci...

The Incredible Porcelain Tools Hand Crafted by Masaki Yamaguchi
Переглядів 108Рік тому
During our first trip to Arita Porcelain Lab, we were gifted a tool made by a local craftsman. Many years later, after using the tool tirelessly in our own studio, we were able to finally meet toolmaker Masaki Yamaguchi and spend a morning in his workshop. Making Ceramics from Wild Australian Clay
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
We have wanted to document our process from digging through to firing wild clays for some time and decided there could not be a nicer setting than the surrounds of the Turon River. The clay however was hard won and near non-existent in the area, but eventually we found a little seam of tricky terracotta. Although working with it was no easy task due to it’s limited plasticity, it fired beautifu...

Re: MM - Tumblers Made From Recycled Ceramic Waste
Amazing work!
Thanks!
hey, awesome piece and love the way you made the mold. Im having a lot of warping on my hollow slipcast cups any tips on keeping them from warping (usually in the glaze firing not so much bisque)
Thanks for the kind words. We have had big issues with distortion from slip casting over the years. The way that we attempt to mitigate this is to let the piece dry in the mould over night before de-moulding. And once removed it from the mould, we use a plastic cone (like a funnel with no spout) and twist it inside each piece to re-shape it back into a circle and then we place let it dry completely before trimming. Un-even drying can also increase the chance of warpage. Warpage rarely shows in the bisque state. Hope this helps
Can you share details on the grinder/ball mill setup?
Sorry for a slow reply. It’s called Cobber Crusher made by Eden Engineering in rural NSW. There are different variations available all over world - searching Portable Rock Crusher should yield good results. Hope that helps
Oh, That is wonderful. Love the video
Love the process and the kelpie
❣
so wonderful just found you
Your videos are beautifully portrayed and enticing. Keep it Up. 💛
Are those plaster for drying? I love wild clay. Do you need to add anything to do or is it plastic enough to work?
Wild clay is always Yep, those are plaster moulds - originally made for slip casting plates but they turned out to be a great size for drying out clay's because they are easy to move around and store. We didn't add anything to help its workability but it definitley was not a great clay to throw despite what it looks like a video.
Loved watching the process, thanks for sharing. I noticed the sweet pup in your video. Do you happen to know the breed? We rescued a pup one month ago and he looks exactly like yours! We thought he might be a rat terrier or feist.
Hey Jen, Sorry it took so long to reply. Raf is an Australian Kelpie, breed for cattle and sheep herding in the Australian climate. Incredible dogs!
wonderful, thank you
Our pleasure Tessa, thank you for watching :)
Absolutely beautiful
In love ❤ with the details
Hello, what tools are used in the video 0:26 ? Do I need to use any accessories? Thank you.
The crusher tool is made by Eden's Engineering in western NSW :)
