Hi Beth! I have always worked in wood but after watching your videos I might try power carving gourds! I wondered what you were using for the black coloring in the accent areas? Ink? Acrylic paint? Stain? Burning? Not sure what would stay on the gourd's surface. Thank you for sharing your creative process. It is fascinating to watch!
Thank you so much! You will love gourds! There are obvious similarities to wood, but of course exciting differences as well :). I do a lot with pyrography but I think the areas you are referring to are those done with alcohol ink when on the non-porous skin of the gourd and simple acrylic paint on the porous, carved flesh. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

Gorgeous! This the second video of yours that I've watched and I'm still amazed. (Although my hands kinda want to cramp up just watching you holding that small tool so long, LOL!) How long do these things last? Don't they start to rot away eventually, like pumpkins do after halloween?
Why thank you! Yes, I do get trigger finger sometimes - gotta remember to stretch my hands & back! They last forever, no lie! Gourds like these (hard shelled gourds) have been found dating as far back as 13,000 BCE. They have been dried after harvesting & are more like wood than pumpkins.
