Shannon Shy - OCD Recovery
Приєднався 21 бер 2021
I am a retired Marine, an attorney, and a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist. I have written three books on OCD recovery. My most recent book is called "Turning Points: Peer Support with a Strategy to Help Those Affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)" The book is about OCD recovery through the lens of peer support, which I have provided to over 300 people worldwide since 2012.
While I was in Afghanistan from 2018 to 2020, I made ten short videos called "Shannon Blitzes OCD." The videos discuss my strategy, including many of the techniques and tips I teach those who suffer. I hope you find them helpful. Remember, you are always more powerful than the disorder. The strength and courage to do so are already within you. You only have to summon them. My books and my videos show you how.

"Sail away from the safe harbor." - #OvercomingOCD - Great Thinkers Thursdays
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." H. Jackson Brown Jr. (b. 1940 - d. 2021; American author best known for his book, "Life's Little Instruction Book," which was on the New York Times' Best Seller from 1991 to 1994.)
H. Jackson (the H stands for Horace, in case you were wondering 😉) gives us a shot of wisdom appropriate for the beginning of a new year, when many of us are making resolutions, but his words ring particularly true to our commitment to recovery from OCD. What especially caught my eye in his quote were the words "Sail away from the safe harbor." Yes, refusing to give the disorder what it craves is scary and it feels like you are taking real risk. Risk with consequences that feels like it would be too much to bear IF you are focusing on the consequences of the details in the specific OCD episode you are facing. But the actual consequence you must pay attention to if you want to recover is the consequence of continuing to give OCD what it craves, your emotional, mental, or physical response. The consequence is that you stay in the hell pit. The actual risk you face is the risk of not getting better. So step beyond your safety boundaries. Step out of your safety net. Sail away from the safe harbor. If you do, you will start to feel those trade winds in your sails. It is how you produce positive change. It gets less difficult to do the more that you do it and the more you do it, the better you get. The great things is that you already have within you all the power you need to do this. I know this to be true. Happy New Year!

"What is to be indifferent?" - #OvercomingOCD - Q&A with Shannon about OCD Recovery

Q: "Hi Shannon! My main theme is existential OCD. For a while, I tried to be indifferent with all kinds of OCD thoughts, but then my mind started to ask me this kind of questions: What is to be indifferent? How are you sure you are having an indifferent attitude? Sometimes I said to myself, "Oh stupid thoughts" or "that thought doesn't matter anyway." And then my OCD asks me "what is a stupid t...

"Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson (b. 1803 - d. 1882; American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, minister, abolitionist, and poet) This quote by Waldo (he actually went by that name) zeroes in on the essence of personal and professional growth. And it is especially true when we talk about the OCD recovery journey. T...

I've written and talked about this before, but it's well worth repeating: You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to be perfect at implementing your strategy to recover from OCD. You don't have to be perfect at anything. Just try your best. When I finally learned this little nugget in my own OCD recovery, it was the straw that broke OCD's back. And if you're in that crowd that insists that...

#OvercomingOCD - Motivation Mondays - Focus on What You Control You don't control whether you have OCD. You don't control when the thoughts come. You don't control the content of the thoughts. You don't control how long "recovery" takes (but you can certainly delay the process). You DO control whether you give OCD what it craves, each time, every time OCD taps you on the shoulder. Thank you for giving up your time Shannon and making these videos you are a beacon of light and hope in the darkness of the hell pit which is OCD. Thanks again Steve
I’m going through some of your videos to try and help someone I know. They do not want to see a therapist because the fear is too strong for them.
Inspiring words Shannon thanks for producing these videos there really helpful and give hope that things can get better 👍
Great question; amazing answer.
You are the absolute best!!!
I know i still struggle with the intrusive thoughts but is more so about the intrusive feelings, urges, impulses and even physical sensations (nonstop groinal response, by far the worst thing)... I feel like that's the reason why I'm stuck in this endless loop.
Thanks for the comment. I treated the feelings, urges, impulses and physical sensations (I had the groinal sensations too) the same as the thoughts. The point is that you get to decide your rules of recovery and how you deal with OCD. Hang in there!
@@shannonshy-ocdrecovery4073 Knowing that you went through the same things and found the strength to overcome it gives me hope. I understand exactly what you mean, I hope I can find that strength as well and try not to be to hard on myself along the journey of recovery! Thank you for the reply and helping out the community, you're appreciated! 🙏

Thank you Shannon for all you do. Your videos are so helpful in our journeys to recovery. You are a blessing!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Stay strong!
Thanks for your words of wisdom Shannon you are an inspiration and your guidance really helps to battle the monster which is OCD thanks Steve
Thank you, Steve! Keep chargin'!
I'm glad I named my dog Winston, constant reminder that if you're going through hell, keep going 😅
I like this analogy because really the progress is that gradual, but this gives me hope.
Your videos are amazing. I just have a question what if it isn’t just thoughts? Like thoughts of worry about something related to health and doubt creating painful physical symptoms? I’ve been through this 3x and each time it always wants me to doubt that MAYBE this time there’s a pathological reason. I’m pushing through bc I have insight it just sucks. I’m just wondering if any of that happened to you
You’re a god send. My particular OCD causes psycho somatic pain. Do I treat that the same? Live with it try to not react like you said
Thank you for the compliment. I'm careful to only speak about what I know and experienced. I did not have psychosomatic pain. So I don't know if there are nuances in the treatment of psychosomatic disorder versus the treatment of OCD that causes somatic pain (as you say is the case with you) or causes one to focus on somatic pain. The Cleveland Clinic posted online that psychosomatic disorder can be treated with CBT. OCD is also treated with CBT, among other treatments. My strategy to deal with OCD did not change regardless of the OCD themes or content of the thoughts. If I suspected OCD was the source of the thought, I attributed it to OCD, allowed it to be in my mind by being indifferent to it, and resisted giving in to the compulsion. I would have applied the same strategy if I got an intrusive thought about pain that was giving me anxiety and demanding that I research it, analyze it, etc. Not sure if this helps.
Hey Shannon. Been living with this for 40+ years. Let me know how to get in touch. Heard your story on “ocd stories “ Would love to know about your coaching recovery etc.. Thank u for your vulnerability

Obsessive Compulsory Disorder.... USED FOR.... POSITIVE THINGS... AND THINKING.... ❤️🌍❤️
❤️🌍❤️
I have the song Evenflow running through my mind now. lol
Have you ever got to a point where you ignored the OCD and moved forward, but later in the day or the next day feel like you had to go back and still do the compulsion? This is where my hell is. So I give in to be certain and get rid of the what ifs. By the way, How long did you have OCD and live with it before you conquered it? Do you think having it a shorter time is easier to conquer it than if you've been suffering from it for a number of years?
Same thing for me. I resist doing my compulsion but then I regret it.
Well I got to your fifth video. This is where I get stuck. I get caught up in the steps of allowing the thoughts to come and resisting the compulsions. I allow the thoughts and try to resist the compulsions, but I get stuck here. I just go in circles. It sounds like what you're saying is to allow these to be there but just ignore them and move on. Is this what you are saying? Gosh, this is so difficult for me. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you Shannon for this series, it has truly been a game changer for me.. The work you are doing is priceless, god bless you and your family.. 🙏💚
I wish my 17 year old son could talk to you; he is suffering through this and just capitulates to OCD's demands and it is so very sad to watch. He doesn't listen to me, but he might listen to you. Yes, harm thoughts exactly as described by Sean and it is too much for such a young man to stand up to right now. We applied to McLean and still waiting to hear while OCD is destroying him.
Thank you so much Shannon!!! You are an inspiration!!
