Thanks for sharing. Great series. I would like to see a series about 1942 scenario. Sorry about a stupid question. But How do you play this Edition by email? Thanks again!!
@@nedfonseca79 thanks man. It’s called TripleA - a free to download piece of software. Give it a google and let me know if you get stuck.
Hello Good Captain! I've enjoyed watching the classic videos over and over the last few years, but this is my first comment. I bought the game in '87 I believe and played it dozens of times those first few years. Being young and impatient, they were quick, explosive games with Germany often trying to take Karelia off the get go. So your videos are great nostalgia! Just wondering if you think UK and USA adopting their own version of Sunny Skies (both buying bombers almost every turn) starving Germany of IPCs would be nearly an automatic (and kinda boring!) winning strategy for Allies. Thanks for the videos and trips down memory lane!
Just as a fighter can't land in the newly conquered territories, neither can a ship use a newly conquerd canal. The most common mistake I see is a turn 1 example ie.. German battleship and transport in the Gibraltar sea zone and the English attack with only airplanes, often people try bringing transports for casualties without bring an attacking warship, apparently thinking the defenders cant shoot at the airplanes without first sinking an unarmed transport. I recently playtested a "single round combat only" game, only amphibious ground units attack multiple rounds and must be first casualties. This really changes many battle outcomes, making "some" defense calculations easier.
In game(s) where you don't get Hong Kong on the first turn on J1 because UK Pac gets lucky, what would you buy with the 39 IPC's (I might be wrong on the math) on J2? It sounds like naval base is a must when you were talking about an opponent who took French Indochina as UKP so you couldn't put down the factory and airfield at around 31:30, but suppose in this scenario, UK Pac gets lucky so you don't have Hong Kong but you still have French Indochina on your J2. Also assume in this hypothetical, Soviets are not trying to attack Manchuria or Korea either
That is a great map to go along with a great video. Thanks Good Captain! Do you have another link for your map? Sure would like to track one down. Thanks once again. Happy New Year!

I'm just now finishing up a "single round combat only" game of this classic A&A, only amphibious ground units continue fighting until win or lose. After 7 turns, Germany has absolutely lost france, they are all in Germany and safe for a couple turns, Japan and Germany each having a carrier & battleship in the Mediterranean. Japan has a factory in Egypt, India and the East indies, along with a $52 income. Im inclined to believe Germany will still fall before the Japanese can take Russia

@@AChannelThatDoesNothing I think I’ll leave it up awhile longer. If things work out, I will have videos for Africa next summer or fall
love the video series you have on this! i played as both sides and used your Cherbourg tax strategy as allies and plow strategy as germans. they both worked great! although i got a little worried at Cherbourg as im not used to taking it so late in the game. what i don’t like about that strategy is that the bombers are tied up in that area the whole game which allows for more german maneuvering. BUT it did work. the german plow almost worked but the dice were rolling in their favor and the Allies captured their last city St Lo on round 9 and held through the next round as the British were finishing off the rest of the german army south east of st Lo. you should do a video of solo play!
@@jimsmith3477 I actually have a “captain at war” account with solo play. I will post my next DDay game but there are a few up there from this year.
@@jimsmith3477 this is my favorite type of comment btw. I’m glad you were able to get something out of these videos. Thank you for posting all this. Great stuff!
I see you have been busy with play testing A&A type games, I'm curious if you have come across home rules, ie...things like 3 hit infantry, WW1's single round combat, promotions from regular infantry to veteran and from veterans to assault infantry. I'm gonna try one soon, the artillery is replaced by the assault infantry and can't be bought, only promoted from a veteran, and the veteran's can't be bought either, only promoted from the regular infantry that IS purchased. I'll be using RISK infantry as the regular, the A&A infantry as veterans and my FORTRESS AMERICA infantry as assault infantry. A hit taken on the assault infantry will reduce it to the veteran, the hit veteran becomes the regular infantry. I want 32 dice maximum roll..Statical Process Control taught me that # and it's significance to the standard deviation, / bell curve data, (worked as a lab tech in the 90's). I tried 32 Dice per unit, not ready for that yet (32 hit units). I want the dice to be more than just hit or miss, like RISK, highest die wins, tie goes to defender unless..??. Three types of aircraft, the $15 bomber(air xpt), the $10 fighter and the $5 Minor air unit(doubling as a tactical air). Bomber & fighter having standard attack defense and movement, the minor air attacks and defends @1, moves 4 and can pair up with the fighter at sea and the tank on land for attacks at 2, the anti aircraft hit on the bomber turns the bomber into 2 minor air units and they must immediately leave the battle board, landing before any more dice are rolled, and temporarily still having the bombers range. I haven't gotten as far with navy or tanks, but my $4 escort moves 1, attacks & defends @1 and with technology, 2 can load onto transports to keep up with the regular ship movements at 2. Maybe the hit tank becomes a mech infantry and the promoted tank simply gets a better defense roll (3,3). The $24 battleships already take 1 hit, a second hit becomes a cruiser, 3rd hit becomes a destroyer, technology might allow the destroyer to take one hit and become the $4 escort. The Avalon Hill 3rd Reich navy rules begin with a 9 factor ship and damage all the way down the the 1 factor ship, their aircraft starting as a 5 factor, all the way to a 1 factor as losses mount
Hello there again. I have a question concerning VC. Is it possible, in your opinion, to include Cairo as a VC?
There's something critical that I think you're missing here, and that is the value of getting a greater number of hits. Yes infantry seem to get a boost when using low luck as you pointed out, but that's because the functional value of the small (6% ish) chance of getting more than 2 hits is immensely greater than its percentage would indicate. The threat of getting 4 hits with 6 infantry is immense even though it's only a 0.8% chance, so the loss of that threat is baked into the low luck calculation. I agree that it makes some choices more obvious, but as someone who believes randomness in a game is inversely proportional to how skillful the game is, I dont mind that much. If I were to suggest a change that preserves some randomness, but reduces variance, I would propose one of the following two mechanisms: 1. roll 3x as many dice and divide the number of hits by 3 rounded to the nearest whole number 2. a player can take a hit on one of their units to either re-roll or force an opponent to re-roll. I like #2 less as it doesnt scale very well, and sea battles get terrible. Thoughts?
I had a question regarding the aircraft carriers and the planes. Does the "take off" of the planes count as a move or no? I understand from the ground to the sea it coUnts, but I've noticed that certain strategies aren't possible if the take off counts as a move.
@@someone9752 take off doesn’t count. The unit is considered in the sea zone.
@thegoodcaptain1217 thank you for your quick response! I've been wanting to get into axis and allies for a while now, so I finally played it with my dad who has been playing it for years. Me and my brother played against him as Germany and japan, and we didn't fare too well because I didn't know the rules just yet. When going up against someone who has a lot more experience than you and is playing as the most polished version of the Allies as you can get (Being one person and all) What would you suggest that I can do to fare better next time. I'm already going to be implementing the strategies and the mindset that you've mentioned in your video, and I watched your entire series on the anniversary edition since that's the one that we've got, so thank you very much for that 😁!
@ if it’s a matter of experience, try adjusting the optional rules a bit more first in my opinion - for example, to help the axis, allow units to move through the Turkish straight and don’t use “escort and interceptors” Do you already have the game configured that way though?
@ National objectives also give a pretty big boost to the Axis.
@@thegoodcaptain1217 No we played with no optional rules or house rules, but we were reliant on the more experienced player with regards to interpreting various things like "tropps when entering a transport count as their move" and the aforementioned "take off cost" for the fighters. Opening the strait sounds like a good balance to offer though for next time!
Can you tell me what is the size of the custom map that you are using? I am thinking of getting it printed on mousepad material, as I really like this version of A & A.
Hello - the link to your 11 Turn Map and the Optional Rules Document is not working?
@@johnjurena7543 thanks! I’ll reupload it shortly and let you know when it’s finished
Try it now.
@@thegoodcaptain1217 Now it works!!! Thanks!!
Great house balancing rules. I may also suggest trying Plastic Commando’s rule of adding a couple of infantry in German East Africa and a German cruiser off the coast of East Africa. This is more representative of the actual situation in East Africa during the war. He has a video explaining the world history and reasoning of this change. I played one game, but I put an extra infantry and one artillery in East Africa and it made a difference. The British were forced to divert some forces to Africa to deal with it, forces they could be using in Europe or the Middle East. It was a slight thorn in the Entente’s side, much like the Germans under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck were in German East Africa during the war. It makes Africa interesting, which is good because it’s the largest area on the map. There was lots of action in Africa during World War One, with powers maneuvering to protect their colonies and enlisting the help of native African troops.
I bought it and like it, though it takes a while to figure out.
Thank you VF and WCS! When it comes to the future of the channel, I am glad that you will be doing the original Europe map next. Would be interested to see what strategies you cook up with Allies.
Great series. You challenge many 'given' strategies used in my old play group. Are you planning a series based on the 'Revised' version released in 2004 (iirc)? Would love to see that.
@@S40cyclist glad you enjoyed the classic videos. I’m still active in the online tournaments and haven’t changed the strategies seen in these videos. Yes, eventually I will get to Revised. But that’s 3-4 versions away. About another two years down the road for me
At 24:30 you're talking about destroying blockers in your second turn. Which units do you usually send to do this? Also, how do you prevent Ukraine from falling to the soviets in your second turn?
Currently sitting on the beginning of Germany's 10th turn. As a 1914 noob, i didnt know any specif strategies, but i am taking Rome and Russia is 1 or 2 turns away from defeat. Bolshevik denied, added house rule that Germany starts with 2 cruisers and a transport off east Africa, and can plunk 1 paid for Arty or Inf in German East Africa per turn. No Tournament rules. Only planes can move 2 spots. German Navy destroyed all British Transports on turn 1 and has been building off the coast of Kiel since. Britain, France, Italy and America have a combined 14 Battleships plus other boats next door to Germany's Navy but too fearful too make the attack as of yet. I just destroyed all of Italy's forces, and America has some troublesome troops but left their transports undefended off the coast of Italy. France and Germany's stacks of units kept dancing around Tuscany, Piedmont, Lorraine and Alsace for many rounds. I've played Hundreds of A&A games on the original, 50th Anniversary, and Global. Never played an A&A game like this. Pretty crazy game..
Hello, Captain! I am watching this series for the second time. This awesome. I am also watching the series on D Day. Excellent too. I would like to ask you for a series of video on the Anniversary Editon taking the 1942 setup. Is it on your plans? Thanks!!
There are 4 not 2 Chinese infantry to start in yunnan. Also your second round does not include placement of Chinese forces after their turn.
There are four infantry in Yunnan in the video. The video is correct. The stats are correct. You think you see two pieces only bc of the angle. Correct, the second round does not include placement of Chinese forces - it doesnt change the strat.

At 2:00 you state that artillery specifically deter amphibious assaults. is there a reason that artillery specifically do this?
@@grottoguru6473 yes. Bc they shoot at amphibious assaults as they come ashore the same as battleships support the assault. Pre-battle dice roll - same as a battleship except not limited by the amount of units. The exception is that whatever is killed off as it comes to shore doesn’t get to participate in the battle.

I'm so glad you made a video sharing his work! It's honestly been a gamechanger for playing D-Day and 1914 on TripleA. If only I had the time to play them nowadays... I'd like to add that TripleA works pretty smoothly with the simple 1941 edition. I love how you have the physical versions of those games in the background. In case anyone is wondering, VictoryFirst can also be found on the TripleA forum, as is wc_sumpton. Note on the module notes for the 1941 improved edition: It says that "For the Revolution to trigger, Central Powers need to control/contest at least one of Finland, Poland, Sevastopol, or Kazakhstan". The Central Powers must control one of those territories, not merely contest them. I write this just to prevent any further confusion over this often misunderstood rule. Looking through the module notes, I see you were credited as well in a small capacity. My thanks goes out to you as well. Thank you so much, VictoryFirst and wc_sumpton! I'll admire you forever.

Awesome! Thank you VF and partner! Thanks to you as well.
Why do you give Northwestern Europe to UK for free? In noncombat phase you leave it open?
It's not "free" - its been "deadzoned". in other words, if the UK moves in, the Germans can easily retake it on their turn. Additionally, the resources used to make this happen pull UK units away from other vital fronts and could potentially mean the destruction of the transport used to take the territory.
Hello! I used this strat, but ran into a rather irritating problem. Me and my friends (total 5 players), played 2 games over a weekend, and in one i played japan and opened with this J1. My german ally saw an oppurtunity to sealion, and although good odds, lost the G3 sealion, although he got it on G4. But thats not the main problem. The problem was that the soviets because of sea lion used 12 infantry i eastern russia to attack manchuria and Korea, and im uncertain what the best response to that would be, considering that i have to put preassure on India to win since Germany lost quite some units in the first failed sealion attack🤔
@@hiimrezgaming9885 I've had numerous challengers since posting the video so I've fought against the 18 Russian stack several times now. If they stack up on the first turn, here is the move adjustment I make: I leave zero troops in Korea on J1. Manchuria needs to be defended though so on J1 I use 8 inf, one mech and one AA gun in Manch with two fighters (remove one fighter from the assault against Kwangtung). The Russians will take a win at 36% with these defenses. If you don't like that, add one more infantry to make it 22% soviet win. We don't care about Korea. The Russians will not gain IPC from its capture due to the convoy zone and they will lose the Mongolia rule forever. Leave it open. Additionally, Korea is the easiest of the two zones to counterattack due to it being adjacent to the Tokyo SZ. Even if he moves all 18 infantry in there on R2, all this means is that the Japanese cant take Korea back yet and will have to wait another turn.
Just want to say, I’ve watched this video a million times and I really do love it! And playing Japan is one of my favorite things to do in this game. However, in my play-through I’m doing against myself, I think I’ve found a way to counter this strategy… 1. A must, but the US just has to dump all of its IPCs into the pacific, which does leave Germany to its own devices, however that’s somewhat of a different topic. But by turn 3/4 I have far surpassed the Japanese navy. 2. Keep at least 12 Russians on the Japanese border and even have them invade Korea or Manchuria… with a stack of 18 and 2 AA maybe even worse. But with this distraction, Japan wasn’t able to focus all on French indochina production and has to divert infantry to retake lost territory. 3. As the Chinese and British player, stack up in Yunnan with infantry and fighters and it becomes pretty much untakeable. I’ve found these to significantly slow the Japanese push, however it does leave Germany wide open. Any thoughts?

I very recently started playing TripleA online, and I was wondering how you would take away the national objectives for anniversary in the online game.
@@jasonaustin7251 uncheck the national objectives box in the game options on the same screen you select the game to start with.
@thegoodcaptain1217 Thank you man, I loved this series BTW. It really helped me look at the British in a different light.
@@jasonaustin7251 I really appreciate this comment, thanks!!
What is the source for the small decals? Thanks for the great video!

Thanks! Great series! A few, perhaps silly, questions: 1) what kind of glue did you use for attaching the magnets to the planes? 2) Can you recommend a source or specification for the plane wing decals? Thanks!
@@BitJam I used testers modeling glue with a metal needle applicator. In my opinion, this is the most precise applicator (one with the metal needle, not the chunky plastic one) For the decals, historicalboardgaming.com is the gold standard.
@@thegoodcaptain1217 Thank you! Both answers were very useful.
Out of curiosity, did anyone in your tournament games use Global 1940's research and technology rules? Additionally, do you have an opinion about those rules? Do you think they're useful at all? Thank you!
Love to hear about that too! In my player group we reached the conclusion that tech overall favours the US and gives a moderate bonus to the allies.
Hello, there. Excellent series. I have a question. What do you consider to be a long term game: 7 to 8 rounds? I ask that because if we are playing a timed game, such as 6 hour game, do you believe it is possible to follow this strategy or is it slow for a short game of 6 to 7 round long? Thanks for your time. I appreciate it.
@@nedfonseca79 a long term game is typically beyond 7-8 rounds. Playing a timed game - especially only six hours - would very likely not be enough time to play this strategy out (or many others). I feel a timed game of six hours would be very hard on the Allies without some kind of rebalance in their favor.
@@thegoodcaptain1217 thanks for your answer and for sharing your great experience with us!
uh did u use ottoman troops in france instead of actual French units????
@@Partgaminguys no
@@thegoodcaptain1217 sry for asking but it kinda looks like ottoman troops tho, nice vid
Well they already sold one copy to this A&A fan. Can't wait until it arrives in a few weeks! Also got guadalcanal (finally after years of almost paying the extreme price for the out of print version) and the 1940 global neoprene big boy map as well! I had no idea Renegade took over this series, but i'm really happy that they did. If they make the games, i'll buy them!
Is there any way to buy a new one in europe?
There are no more "new" ones but you might find one online? Like ebay?
