The civil war was a mix cause of several factors including the fact that an Igbo man started the first military coup and killed in cold blood the northern elite. But Gowon is a liar here claiming he had no hand in the revenge coup that killed ironsi

The problem here is the colossal ineptitude of the interviewer! It’s share incompetence on her part. Obviously gowon is evasive and stingy with the truth. At his age one would expect some level of honesty instead of prevarications! Very disappointing!!

I have listened to Yakubu Gowan at different interviews and it appears to me that even in old age he still feels like he is still fighting a war (even of words) with Ojukwu and by extension, the Igbos. He so vehemently defends obvious lies. The war is ended and he has lived long enough to see the need to admit his errors of the past and not enter the grave with them. For instance, how could he open his mouth and suggest that the casualties suffered when the Igbos were going back to the East prior to the war, was merely because Ojukwu urged them to return with secession in mind.

A Great Statesman. May GOD ALMIGHTY BLESS YOU AND YOUR Family always. You inherited Nigeria at her most troubled time. All of you were young, inexperienced, from different backgrounds trying to grapple with making the young nation move ahead. Keep keeping your watch like your other colleague in arms former President also Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. Definitely GOD had wanted you to serve him that's why the coup because your heart is lifted up to HIM.

The courage of David and the wisdom of Solomon! What a word. Like Abraham Lincoln of 19th century United States, General Gowon had the greatest struggle in keeping the nation together. For the records, his post-war agenda was anchored on a tripod of three R's viz: reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction. The first R (reconciliation) was more evident in the immediate post-war era while the fruits of the other two R's may take longer time to harvest. Weeks, months and years passed by without reports of major organized group violence against the returnee Igbos. Gowon's statement of "no victor" and "no vanquished" sank well into the psyche of Nigerians and returnee Biafrans. He attempted to industrialize Nigeria during the oil boom. He passionately pursued inclusive growth programs including indigenization policy which ensured Nigerians' equity ownership of various categories of blue-chip businesses in Nigeria. Post-headship of the country, Gen Gowon has been a vocal ambassador of peace and promoter of national reconciliation. 90 looks good on him. Great respect, Sir.

Rtd General His Excellency sir.what cause the war is not avoidable but we learnt that the killings of the igbos and Easterners started since 1945 1953 and 1966 for what they knew not and is anything like Aburi Accord you mentioned that ojukwu want to declare Biafra but I learnt is because of the killings of his people in the north that he made the declaration

Gowon only scratched on the surface of most of the questions asked him during the interview. He knew that he was an accomplice in the planning and assassination of Aguiyi Ironsi by T.Y. Danjuma. on July, 29 , 1966.

He carved Igbo areas like a butcher carving meat out of a bone. About 33% of Igbo areas were in other areas. Fast forward, Imo State now has the largest gas deposit in West Africa. If he had known that Imo would be Imolite, he would have carved it up like grated carrot. Karma has a way of displaying wonders.
