Pacific Enterprise Network
United States
Приєднався 11 кві 2024
The Pacific Enterprise Network Industrial Spur is a fun, tongue-in-cheek N scale layout built for operations. It is freelance for rolling stock and industry, but loosely (very loosely) based in south central Washington state. I try to make the operations somewhat realistic, but have fun with names... If you really want to know, check the acronyms for my businesses :D
The layout is under construction, I have a long way to go, but I enjoy doing operations in the meantime and thought I'd share them. It currently has Thrall with 3 businesses and an interchange with BNSF, and recently added is Ellensburg with 5 businesses and an interchange with the Central Washington Railroad.
I use JMRI Operations Pro for train building and operations, and DCC++ on an Arduino with a WiThrottle server for running the trains themselves. Currently, my only locomotives are Atlas B23-7s and an Atlas SD24.

New Year - New Ops!
2025 is here, and I'm trying out a new operations scheme in JMRI, this video ends up being pretty long because of it! Trying to make operations a bit more realistic with more heavy reliance on the BNSF interchange. Sadie has a long work day ahead!

Operations - Problem Express (and update)
Thanks for the great overview! Happy new Year!
Just curious what you used for the inside corner bracing of the Brown's Lubrication building.
Those are actually some 3d printed braces I made specially for putting buildings together.
@@PacificEnterpriseNetwork Thanks
Great update, thanks! It looks like this will be a lot of fun to operate. Happy New Year! - Chuck
What if you get a Hold on all switch list???
@@jacjac5761 I'm not sure what you're asking? A hold?
Yes when I build it it's showing HOLD NO WORK. I'VE BEEN TRYING FOR A FEW DAYS TO FIGURE IT OUT BUT THE SAME THING
@@jacjac5761 I would check the following: -All locations have tracks set to accept the appropriate types of cars you have in your "cars" tab -All locations are set to "accept all loads" and "accept all roads" -All locations are assigned on the "routes" tab -Your train is assigned to a route If none of these work, I would probably start new. Something is clearly set up to deny service to the cars.
Try reading one of the Build Reports. Check the box at the bottom of "trains" window for build reports and read through it. It should tell you why there are no moves.
Nice overview…great you can 3D a lot of your structures and details…Happy 2025…
3d printing has truly revolutionized the hobby, especially once you can CAD design and completely make your own designs from scratch. Happy New Year!
Trains run 24-7…nice night Ops…
@georgiasunbelt finally got some lighting done so thought I'd put it to use :)
Hello. First time commenting here. How do you determine what cars and where the interchange cars go or coming from? Thank you very much. Dats
@@TheClosetBranch I use JMRI Operations Pro for all of my train building. It has a list of all my cars and locations, as well as what cars are serviced by each location, then builds the trains based on that information.
Thank you very much for the information. 🥰👍👍
Good session! What brand are these Santa Fe units and what brand are the sound decoders of these?
@@SpringfieldAndWestern they are Atlas B23-7s, with XL Systems (formerly MRC) 1812 boards. The boards are a bit limited as far as features go, but they are reasonably priced, especially for sound, and I feel they are better than Digitrax.
@@PacificEnterpriseNetwork Ah thanks, I thought so. I feel these do have a little bit tinny (?) sound to it, but otherwise they seem ok. I recently looked into adding sound to my tiny little operation but I´m very undecided at the moment. I would probably try XL Systems if I could get them for like 50 Euros here in Germany, but I could only order them from the U.S. and with shipping, taxes and customs you are already close to 100 Euros and for that amount I could just as well buy a ESU sound decoder. Problem with ESU: Somebody needs to load the sound to it for you if you don´t have a programmer yourself and then you still need to solder the lights to the board and I´m really terrible with all things electronics. Sure, people will offer this as a service but then it will be even more expensive. But at the same time I don´t think I can convince my wife I need a factory fresh sound engine for 250 Euros or more... 😅
@SpringfieldAndWestern i believe you can order ESU decoders with the sound already loaded on them directly from ESU. I totally recommend getting sound- DCC and sound is what brought me back to the hobby after about a 15 year hiatus. I agree the sound quality with XL Systems could be a little better, but for the price it has been hard to pass up. I do think my next locomotive will be a Broadway Limited with the Paragon 4 decoder, I have heard nothing but good things about them. I know they're a bit pricey, but when you add up the costs of a locomotive, a DCC/sound board and a keep alive, the price doesn't seem so bad.
@SpringfieldAndWestern also, if you take your time and practice, soldering on these tiny boards doesn't have to be so scary. I added my own keep alive to the board in my SD24, and it wasn't as hard as I thought. I plan to add them to these locomotives as well.
@@PacificEnterpriseNetwork cool to hear, I will need to continue to check out all of my options. Being in Germany does make things a little bit harder, still. Yesterday I saw an amazing offer for a new Atlas with sound in an American shop, but as soon as you add shipping costs and all the other fees, the advantage over paying the regular price locally in Germany was gone. We'll see what the future holds, looking forward to your next engine!
The weathering on some of the train cars looks good
@danielarens8072 thanks, its a $3 weathering powder kit from hobby lobby.
Nice ops session. Thanks for sharing. Dave
Thank you!
Mirror trick is what I plan on doing at the end of my layout. Makes it look like a never ending track.
That's a great idea, I'd never considered that.
I like the extension keep up the good work
Great extension - looking forward to the detailing process! Any plans to fix thiose backdrop pics?
Yeah eventually. I want to first finish the scenery, since that's how they got messed up. The main thing holding me up on the expansion now, is that everyone locally seems to be out of rail joiners, I ended up ordering some which are coming in soon.
Nothing wrong with a nice short Ops session…
Good session 👍
Thank you!
I’m always looking for a new channel to watch; found one👍😀OperateOnOperator
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for sharing the video.
Nice little ops session! The load of those gondolas is just some stuff to produce weight on wheels I guess?
The metal weight in the PENX one is literally just weight. The "load" in the BN gondola is actually a piece of my layout that I use as a load :) I've also been known to use bolts or anything else I have laying around for a "loaded" gon.
Hey there. Very nice switching layout, I really enjoy where this is going! Also cool new engine. Looking forward to your next videos, I naturally had to subscribe 😉. I also do switching in N scale, take a look if you want. Brgds 👋
Thank you! I know it's slow progress, but I'm having fun doing it.
Those Insulfrogs are vulnerable because the current is carried from the Points ends contacting the inside of outer rail. After painting, possible residue in between. I use IPA on a foam ended QTip to clean (carefully)between both the point rail and outer rail. Foam tip comes out usually color of track paint. Also the Point Pivots get paint on/in them. They bridge power from Point Rails by jumpers underneath to Closure Rails. That can cause Stalls when trucks are on Closure Rails And Point Rails at the same time. I switched to Electrofrogs to get away from Stalls on plastic Frogs. They still are subject to Stalls from poor Point Rail ends contact. Unless you install Frog Juicers, which I did on one main Yard. Those run Flawless. I always wipe track with a small piece of 1/8” Craft Foam and spray CRC on Pivots and Point Rail ends. Then softly scrub between point rails with a small Child Toothbrush to clean points. Gives (almost) no dropouts during Ops videos. 🎉😊 N Scale is tougher doing Switching for sure. 😅
Thank you for the input! I ended up soldering the joints, which somehow caused even more headaches because now I'm getting shorts as the wheels cross over the frogs. I think the wheels are somehow touching both rails at the "point", because it seems to only happen when a metal wheel hits that exact spot. So now I'm in the process of cutting gaps just past the frogs and making more power drops. Once I get it running smoothly again, I can focus back on scenery, ballasting, etc. I am thinking about switching to CRC contact cleaner for my tracks, I've been using PB blaster on a rag which does seem to work, I just need to be more vigilant about actually doing it, I tend to get lax on maintenance then it bites me in the butt.
@@PacificEnterpriseNetwork CRC QD works good on the Peco Switches. No residual leftover. On the frogs sometimes they come a little tight from the factory. I run an NMRA Metal gauge through both directions to open up the plastic frogs a touch. Using the Points Nubs on the Gauge to make sure they aren’t pinched to tight for wheels. Clear the grooves lightly. Some of them you can barely slide the Gauge through. 😉
@doublediamondrailroad5949 I am going to try putting some paint on the rails at the tightest point, I read an old forum post about the exact issue I'm having, and that fixed it. I might end up having to replace one of the turnouts also, I accidentally touched the frog with my soldering iron and now it's causing derailments. I'm trying to file the frog back into shape but it doesn't seem to be working so far.

As always good stuff bud.👍
@rad5.8fox7 thanks man, appreciate it!
I made the mistake of taking my O guage to my daughters house. Well after a week with the grandsons I ended up coming home with 3 trains and a bunch of track. Nothing like watching a 3 year old run trains with Lionel's app.
It's really easy to catch train fever!
As always good content. 👍
Nicely done Man.👍
Thanks 👍
I just came across this video ..... Subscribed!!! 👍
You probably should use a wooden stick so you don’t short if you touch the rails with that metal screwdriver.
@@nyg21bd I didn't even think of that. Thanks!
The view is good. Nice interchange work
Thank you!
Very cool 🤠
Thanks!
American Silicon keeps you busy
It's the biggest industry, with 3 car drops. I actually would like to include some sort of scrap outbound as well. On my old layout it had 3 separate spurs as well.
You have a very handsome voice, sir.
Did you make all of these Trains James? Pretty neat!
A few of them I made myself, most of them were bought.
