Beautiful music
Beautiful! Well done!
Good morning church!
Great job Robin!
This was a wonderful homily from Rev. Brittany this morning.
God would rather us obey His commands rather than “acting” compassionate to a group whose sin is an abomination before the Lord. ““For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” 1 Peter 4:17 KJV “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.” Romans 1:26-32 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”” Revelation 21:8 “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage. But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.” Jude 1:4-19 “But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.” I Timothy 1:8-11 “Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot-they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all- so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.” Luke 17:28-30 “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight! Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of his right!” Isaiah 5:20-23 “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5 “Therefore pride is their necklace; violence (cruelty) covers them as a garment.” Psalm 73:6 “The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.” Proverbs 8:13 “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.” Proverbs 18:12 “It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.” Proverbs 16:19 “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.” Proverbs 29:23 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2 “There they cry out, but he does not answer, because of the pride of evil men.” Job 35:12 “A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that beats him, but the words of the wise keep them safe.” Proverbs 14:3 “And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them (intimately)”. Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.” Genesis 19:5-7 “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Leviticus 18:22 “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.” Leviticus 20:13 “Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.”” Genesis 18:20-21
Well done!
Glad in my parish the entire congregation sits for the postlude, every Sunday, in prayer or just to enjoy the magnificent music that our organist puts so much time and effort into performing.
I've tried to encourage this at my church (First Baptist Church of KCMO in the South Kansas City area) as well, after the example of a lone couple who are friends of our new organist. I've "request-quired" that our Chancel Choir remain seated on the platform/chancel area during the Postlude giving the reasoning that all of the musicians work in service to God as a "team", therefore, no one gets "left behind". The congregation has still not caught on...
Easter Vigil services can be hard to pull off, but some things are just obvious. What is the point of bringing the powerfully symbolic single Paschal Candle into a nave that is full of people already holding lit candles? The Paschal Candle is supposed to enter the darkness by itself, and the light from it spreads through the room. The Paschal Candle is the source of that light. This Paschal Candle came into a room filled with candles already lit. The symbolism was ruined. The Exsultet is either spoken or sung from beginning to end. Dividing it in half between singing and speaking was bizarre. But when you consider the way the Cantor butchered his part, as though he had never sung it before, then I suppose it was good he stopped and let the other guy take over the reading of it to the end. The Rector’s perfunctory liturgical style helped diminish any sense of mystery, wonder, and awe. I stopped listening after, “Ready? Alleluia Christ is risen.”
The organist's reharmonization of verse 3 of the opening hymn is pretty close to being the worst I've ever heard. It did nothing to uplift the singing, but only attempted to confound it. So in that sense, well done!
Thank you so much for continuing the online services post covid. My wife Diane has had some pretty bad cold symptoms last couple weeks and didn't want to spread it to anyone so we have thoroughly appreciated being able to attend from home! David Guthrie
