Hitcher kicks ass 👍
I struggled to draw anything profound out of The Substance. I left the viewing feeling like I'd just watched an elaborately produced bikini commercial. The film doesn't say anything particularly interesting about desire, age or femininity. I really detest films which shove lots of flesh down your throat, and then pretend to have some grand pretext for debauching your imagination. 'The Substance' is a very close cousin of the 'X/Maxxxine' movies, which combine absolutely irrational scenarios with a script that has been lifted from an 'Archie' comic. The fact that some of this film's most ardent critics are intelligent young women, really says something too. If you look at Rodin's famous sculpture of the aging beauty, it says infinitely more about women and ageing, than this cheap sex-ploitation film.
👍 You can hear the torture in the Werewolf's howl. 'Jaws', 'Alien', 'The Thing' and 'An American Werewolf in London' are the big four for me as a kid in the 80s. Terrified me. Have you listened to the audio drama retelling of this movie? ✌️🤟🤘
No I haven't! We must check this out. When Griffin Dunne showed up on Only Murders in the Building Season 4, I whooped. I have to agree with your top 4. I would have to cheat and have 5 and include The Shining
Would agree, this is a partial return to form for Shyamalan! Although i enjoyed the film, don't get me wrong, i loved the tension and suspense, the trailer is a bit smarter. Agree with your point that its reminiscent of De Palma! Josh Hartnett has good horror cache for this film and is perfect casting! Hayley Mills, whilst she is always fantastic, just seemed an unexpected choice!
Very unexpected but I didn't mind. I thought it was a lot better than Knock at the Cabin which I didn't hate either
Also, interesting you mention the misogyny that's often levelled at Hitchcock (i would agree with you both that this is unfair). An example of this is his penultimate film, Frenzy (also which i hope you can review) - none of the characters in that film are particularly likeable, but the female characters are often the strongest. I'm new to your channel and enjoyed this review, please keep up the great work! 😊❤
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. Believe it or not, I still haven't seen Frenzy since I was a teen. That's was 35ish years ago. My mate has my boxset with it in and I might just have to rescue it soon. I think his writers gave women agency in their lives. That was rare in films back then. We will be reviewing Hitchcock films as soon as I get that boxset back.. Additionally, if you can watch Psycho on 4K it's a revelation.
@@shitcast2024brilliant, can't wait! I'm a bit of a Hitchcock fan and we're currently doing a retrospective on my own podcast. Incidentally, there's another great Australian show, Hitchpod, which I highly recommend 😊 I've been lucky to see Psycho in 4K on the big screen and would agree, it's a revelation! It's such a rich, multilayered film. I've got the Psycho blu ray set from Arrow that was recently released here in the UK, it was great to see 2, 3 and 4 in HD for the first time! Keep up the great work 😊
Psycho 2 is so underrated! The original film is such a classic and like the Bates mansion, looms large over horror cinema. Psycho 2 is one of those sequels that dares to stand up to it and succeeds! It actually took quite a lot for Perkins to return to the role, Psycho was such a shock to his image at the time that he bought himself out of his Paramount contract and sought work in Europe. We're glad he did eventually embrace Norman to made Psychos 3 and 4 (equally underrated) - please say you'll be reviewing these, too!
Eleesha has yet to watch 3 or 4. I like the subgenre skip in 3 to be a pseudo-slasher film. I need to buy the 4K boxset from the UK
17:14 I had trouble with this as well. Why would she clone herself and not be able to experience the younger sensations and experiences?? I then realized that she is experiencing Sue BUT not shared with Elisabeth which is why the Substance is quite cruel. Demi Moore actually is experiencing Elisabeth and Sue but at different intervals. Sue has all the past memories at birth and is a much younger Elisabeth in a perfected form but with her own autonomy. They don't share experiences because she's her own body but with Elisabeth's conscience in that moment. Once the conscience is transferred back then she's older Elisabeth again. Imagine one of those dreams where you are a younger perfect version and you'll do anything to stay dreaming so you don't wake up and keep living that life ( even though you never fully remember the details, you know you enjoyed that dream). Older Demi Elisabeth knows Sue is a dream and toxic for her health but she now is dependent on those dream experiences so she continues with the Substance. ANYWAYS fabulous review and insight. New fan here. ❤
Cheers! We're so stoked that you liked the video. I really haven't gotten over this film. It's like mental molasses in that it stick with you. You're spot on about Elizabeth/Sue's relationship. I mean how else would Sue know how to walk/talk etc. I hope this gets a 4K release over here Thank you for watching
Few films have been so shamefully overlooked, prejudged and disregarded as the fantastic 'Psycho II'. Everyone simply assumed no sequel could ever come close to the Alfred Hitchcock original. Far from being some soulless cash grabbing gore fest a la Friday the 13th, 'Psycho II' is a genuinely intriguing mystery which contains Anthony Perkins' finest performance as Norman Bates and we discover much more of his character. Meg Tilly is outstanding as Mary, the niece of Marion Crane who is initially intent of driving Norman insane again in an attempt to get him reinstitutionalised, but develops feelings for him. Jerry Goldsmith's score is superb, so far from Bernard Herrrmanns original and i personally find this film much better that 'Psycho' and imminently more re-watchable.
It's like Amityville II: The Possession to The Amityville Horror. I can't say that I prefer it to the first one but they are very much on par as a one-two punch
Another great video!
Fantastic review! I had chills listening to the description! I must say, I really like the short form videos. Great work!
Cheers brother, thanks for the feedback. We like shorter videos too hehe. This film...you HAVE to see it,
@@shitcast2024it is on my list now brother
Definitely check out Perkins other movie, Gretel and Hansel. Best review yet
Thank you mate, we appreciate it! It's on our list of must see movies. the fact that he is making a King film made me squee with delight
Great video. AMIL was a big influence on my own writing.
It's a seminal film and I'm glad you found inspiration from it. I practically quote it every day
Hell yeah!
Aroooooooo!!
I enjoyed the film. Rupert and Bautista were great in the film.
I think that they were too! (Warren)
Oh no! Hope you have a quick recovery.
Thanks Frank. Weight bearing as of this week. Fingers crossed!
You guys are so good...I thought it was just me being fussy when I watched this movie when it first came out maybe I wasn't wrong after all...lol
I think you probably have the right opinion
I haven't seen this movie yet. It's releasing on 4k in a couple weeks. I actually can't wait to see this movie.
It's an adventure, thats for sure
Hey guys
Hello
The Caesar reboot Planet Of The Apes trilogy is one of the best remake or reboot movies out of all the remakes that have been done to death. And the trilogy is the most consistently good since Lord Of The Rings. New film is great too. Fantastic world building.
Exactly! Well put, I agree. The world building is what sells this series and sets it apart from the other "Big Monkey" series that is quite frankly, flogging a dead horse. Compared to this series, the Kong movies are quite bereft of any nuance or care. But then again, people like Dan Stephens
I still need to see this. I like Prey at Night as well. G
Ironically I havent seen Prey at Night. I will do just to get a better sense of the series....sort of
Warren has seen it and he reckons it’s terrible! It can’t be worse than Zombie 4 though, although that movie has a banger of a theme song! 😂
I was recommended a movie today as the best terrible movie ever: Birdemic (2010). It is apparently a horror movie, so I thought you might like to see it too. The person who recommended it loved it. I don't think you will though. 😅
Great video! I love this movie, and can't wait to own it.
It is going to rock in 4K! I'm glad you liked it my friend
Can't wait to see it!
I think you'll like it if you're like us and just wanted a good time at the movies
New subscriber! I LOVE this movie! 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Hello there Kathy! We're so happy that you've not only subscribed but also love this movie. What was your favourite part of the movie?
Wow! I've never had that experience of the theater showing the wrong movie. Lol.
It happened to me when I saw Jurassic Park in 93 as well. I hated that film until 2013. Now i see it for the epic masterpiece that it is.
In the 70s, I went to see A Star is Born and they showed the reels out of order. I didn't realize it until I watched the movie years later… I had always thought it was just the most confusing movie ever.
This happened to a few friends of mine (Warren) when they watched Mission Impossible for the first time in '96. Pays them back for going without me!
Warren I can't believe you said what you did about Australian movies! Shocked 😳
Just like every country, there have been awesome Aussie movies and quite a few shockers. I am starting to really deep dive into them again as I realised that there are gaps in my Aussie film watching. Don't stress I'm not a hater. Anymore.
Hearing that Flanagan has the rights gave me goosebumps. Thanks for the video.
I know right!! If anyone can make it work, he can!
Great review Warren, your energy level for this review is what the film deserved. A phrase my wife often uses, “trying to shove 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag”. Lots of plot points the went nowhere and lots of plot points that came out of nowhere. This movie suffers from what I call "the TNG effect" where the ensemble cast is too big for the story and time limit to carry. Slimer should've been cut, Janine cut, Dr Wartzki's entire character and library sequence could've been 5 minutes of exposition given to Postcast (assuming the movie was told from his POV... a missed opportunity). Walter "dick-less" Peck was wasted, Melody I don't even know what the point of her character was. With that bloat cut, the story could've been fleshed out into something with more substance. Exactly as you pointed out, this needed more time (or less… who knows) in the writer’s room. Gil Kenan couldn’t direct his way off a cliff if you strapped weights to him. Despite all that, I recommend going to see this movie simply because it’s not trying to push “the message” and McKenna Grace who carries the movie. This film needs a director’s cut… by Jason
Ki Ki Ki indeed! I agree with everything you said and yes! the film from Podcasts POV would have been brilliant. Less cast and more cohesive storytelling would have made this gone from an embarrassing mess to something that I would had loved. Afterlife was so good! I just have to shake my head and sigh
I need to see this movie!
You’ll never regret it mate. It’s so damned good
You two are great ❤
Thank you xx
Great video guys!
Thanks mate
Thank you my friend. It’s ok, I still love her. 😊
Great video guys. Eleesha, sorry, but I love this film! Also, you guys are hilarious! Keep up the great work!
I think this is a guys film lol
Warren, my friend! I'm happy you started a YT channel! Best of luck to you and your wife's channel!
Thanks Frank! I really appreciate it. You’re one of the reasons I am doing this
First of all fantastic first podcast, loved it! I was worried when you picked AVP to trash, then came to the realisation that it’s not as bad as people say haha. One comment though, regarding the knife games that Weylen was playing. I think it’s actually not a bad thing to put it in as the android Bishop, was based off Weylen and as such i imagine would have had imprinted memory, and thus the knife habit. Just a hot take, not sure if it’s canon. Love the episode and can’t wait for the next!
Excellent point on the imprinted memory. I like that idea!
