Campervan projects with my Mazda Bongo.
Is a 2 ltr Mazda Bongo Any Good?
Let's see if a 2 Ltr Petrol Mazda Bongo is any good! I get asked a lot if my 2ltr petrol bongo is up to the job, so in this video I go through some of the main points that I think make this model a good choice.

L Shape Seating In The Bongo A new way of setting up the bed
I don't need a conversion, but sure appreciated your design. Good on ya', man!
Thanks, that’s very kind to say 😁
I have a v6 petrol , no chance of 30mpg , steady 65mph on autoroute saw 24 mpg! Was 4 up fully loaded mind. Engine is smooth and quiet until around 4000 revs , say kickdown up a hill , then i start feeling a bit sorry for it!
Thanks for the reply. Interesting to hear your mpg stats. I am always wondering how the other engines fair in the real world. Is the V6 powerful? The 2 ltr screams like a banshee on certain hills 😂
It's reasonably powerful, but the power comes on after around 3500 rpm, where it starts to get noisy and thirsty! More omph lower in revs would be nice, haven't tried the other engines so like u have nothing to compare it too! Great channel and happy bongoing!
Nice and informative! I've got a saddened Mazda Bongo 2.5D manual. If that's something you'd be interested in. £1250 Based South East.🤙🏽 Stripped and waiting for that classic conversion.. the only thing that it comes down to is time, of which I don't have much of.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah time is the pesky beast that is hard to tame! I would love to take on a bongo renovation project at some point, but not right now unfortunately. Hope you find someone soon 👍
my 2.5 is very slow up hills but you cant ever be in a hurry in a bongo 😀
The joy is in the journey! 😁
Hello i watch all your videos In one you said reach out to you if any questions on you doing conversions on other vans Could you fit a smev conversion kit in a vw thanks
Hi drop me an email to discuss - info@vantasticideas.co.uk - Cheers!
I'd probably look at Honda Stepwagon 2.0 litre petrol. You get closer to 40mpg, very reliable engine and timing chain rather than belt.
Good call. They have been on my radar before and look like a very similar size to the Bongo. Do you know if they are popular in the UK?
ive been looking at diesels mainly as 4x4,,how deos the 2ltr 2wd perform in snow ,your tyre upgrade should help ,my concern was steering wobble at speed meaning alot of parts under stress, have you any feed back on snow tyres on the 2wd i live in the peaks ,love scotland and both places challenging weather ,im not one for speeding around fully loaded 3 ton needs thought to stop ,60 max as a rule ,the 2 ltr is simpler meaning cheaper to fix as less to go wrong ,more revs but easily copes, everyone ive met love the drive of the bongo ,a few vw owners only changed from the bongo ,for more space, but prefer the drive of the bongo, auto box gives more time to concentrate on the road as not faffing with gears, nearly all had their best trips in a bongo mainly being their first camper and always have a good word for the van all say they are thirsty but its a campervan automatic and if diesel 4x4 so a light foot definitely helps ,the bijou footprint makes for more exploration that, big vans just cant do ,i see you were on winnats pass a good test for any motor great informative vid with good points between variants cheers sam
It's not brilliant in the snow, the snow tyres have helped a lot, but they've not seen that much snow to be honest where I live. It is a rear wheel drive vehicle which is quite twitchy in snowy conditions so not the best! I can imagine the 4x4 version is far better :) But the Bongo does drive really nicely, the auto gearbox is just great. Cheers!
@@VantasticIdeas thanks for reply ,ive seen a few vids of 4x4 in snow on steep climbs as im familiar to the areas used in the vids and really good in snow the plus side its a mechanical 4x4 more which means less faff and its always 4x4 ,
Thanks for this video. The only thing to mention. From my point of view. Based on pot Holes. My Bongo has low profile Tyres and Wheels. Wheel rims are £500 each to replace and tyres £150 each. I would never ever buy a car with low profiles again. Ride comfort is terrible with potholes but road holding exceptional. George 😢
I have heard the low profile tyres are terrible on the bongo. Since putting the bigger all terrain wheels on mine the ride quality is so much better, even over potholes!
@VantasticIdeas I have uprated suspension on mine but potholes are something else in Northamptonshire.
Thanks for these videos. We just bought our 2L Petrol and I watched all of your videos, extremely helpful. 🙏
Ahh thanks ☺️ glad the videos are useful, and welcome to the 2 ltr club!! I hope you’re enjoying your Bongo? 👍
@@VantasticIdeas Thanks. We bought ours with a broken fiberglass top(converted) I will fix it first then it will be ready to travel.
@ Good luck with the repairs on the roof!!
Enjoyed your video. How do you find Mazda Bongo as touring vehicle
I find it very comfortable to drive, especially with the auto gearbox, so it's great for touring. Although I find it a bit noisy as there's not much sound proofing. It is quite a small van so space is at a premium.
@ Thanks a lot. Enjoy your touring
thanks for doing this video. I've been contemplating buying a 2kw heater for quite a while. just one question is it good on fuel ?
I couldn’t say at the moment as I’ve only really run it for a couple of hours so far. I’m very curious to know how long a 5ltr tank willlasts (I’ll do an update)! Cheers 👍
Are all those other holes open to the element ? May want to get some bungs. Looking good enjoy. You can run red diesel and kerosene the rough it and it’s cheaper
Great video, thanks. It came just after we bought our new Bongo. I will start with this mod. Parts ordered from your links :)
Great! It's also worth joining the Chinese diesel heater group on Facebook as it's a good source of info for parts that might be worth upgrading at some point (fuel lines, jubilee clips etc..). Happy Bongoing 😀
Hi .Nice vid..but unless you like smell of diesel..I'd take the feed out of the top of your plastic tank. Using a small stand pipe.. The set up you have will leak at sometime.(just a Cheap Chinese O ring stopping it from escaping ) Stinking your van out..not good..👍
That is something I’m worried about, I’ll look into the stand pipe, thanks 👍
Great video my old friend. Good to see you on the screen again a nice watch with a Sunday morning coffee 👌👌
Cheers Bren 👍
Hi great job, what are the measurements for the boards of the seat ? Thanks
Sorry for the late reply!! Back rest board is 52 x 122 cm and bottom board is 60 x 122 cm. Cheers!
Great thanks
What is it like refuelling on LPG nowadays, as I heard they’re fading it out. Also how much is an LPG conversion?
It's not as easy to find, if you use the app myLPG.eu it gives you places to find it. As the cost has risen significantly over the last year or so it's not as cost effective. My system broke a couple of days ago and I'm considering whether it's worth investing in fixing it or removing it?? No idea what they cost to install, but make sure you have places to fill up and when you're likely to get that investment back. I'm not sure it's worth it anymore to be honest.
@ Thank you 🙏🏻
When you start to use LPG it consumes approx 20% more volume compared to petrol. So if your car was using 12lt petrol per 100mile it will use 14.4lt LPG. So it will be beneficial when LPG price is 20% below petrol price. But Price ratio between LPG and petrol significantly varies between cities in the UK. Warrington area 2025 Jan Petrol 1.40 LPG 1.00 Per 100 miles Petrol cost 12lt x1.4 = 16.8£ LPG cost 12x1.2x1= 14.4£ Means min 2£ savings in 100miles. Where at the same times In Birmingham area 1lt Petrol is 1.35£ 1lt LPG is 0.8£ So in 100miles Petrol Cost 12lt x 1.35 = 16.2£ But LPG cost 12lt × 1.2 × 0.8 = 11.53 So savings will be 4.5£ per 100miles. More than double. In Birmingham area average cost is 1000£ for adding LPG Means you need 1000÷4.5 = 222 x100 = 22200miles to start saving. But in Warrington area you will start savings after 45000miles.
Excellent analysis! I should have also taken that into account. My system broke a couple of days ago and I'm actually considering whether it's worth repairing or removing? the cost of LPG near me is starting to be un-economical. One issue in my van is the tank taking up my spare wheel space and also factoring what the extra weight (of the LPG system) will have on fuel consumption.
Wahey. You'll wonder how you ever got by without one now. Great install too by the way 😊
Thanks! I'm pleased I finally pulled the trigger and got on with it, I'm very good at procrastinating :)
Hope it doesn't...kroak
Oh very good 😂
@ sorry🤣
Круто. Но бак с топливом в салоне, это лишнее. Подключи к топливным трубкам двигателя.
You know I suppose if you routed the heat output to the other side you could probably tap into the van's existing rear vent system - it goes up that pillar just behind the seat and it comes out in the middle top of the van. That would be pretty trick!
Unfortunately because my van has an aftermarket pop top they remove all those top vents to fit it 😭 otherwise that would have been amazing!
Well done! Thanks for sharing. Canada is a little colder than UK but the diesel heater made a massive difference for us over here, year round camping now. Interesting to see you install it on the drivers side. I installed mine under the passenger seat and it comes out the middle console - found a removable hatch on the back of the hump. Everyone does it a little different - cheers!
If it works well in Canada then I know I’m going to be toasty warm!! I have an LPG system on my van and there’s a lot of the equipment for that under the passenger seat so I couldn’t put it there, which would have been my first choice. Thanks for watching 👍👍
@@VantasticIdeas Have you shown your LPG system? I don't think I've seen the video. Would love to see it.
@@UserNamedNone I did a video about LPG here - ua-cam.com/video/eMsb6vvzKKk/v-deo.htmlsi=oXtfMu0iejqH4tlM My system literally broke 2 days ago!! The price of LPG is getting cray here in the UK so I'm having to consider whether it's worth fixing or removing?
@ Even though my Bongo is a diesel I always wanted to get a toroidal LPG tank to fit where the spare tire goes, and use that to power my camp (stove, generator, fire pit). Sadly, no one sells those around here anymore. Sounds like you could easily do the same if its already installed.
Another awesome video! I started following you when I had a Bongo, but I've moved onto something bigger now and honestly can't get enough of the camper vids! Keep it up!
Thanks! So cool to hear you still watch the vids 😁 In an ideal world I would have many vans in various sizes as the bongo is just too small for certain trips. Cheers 👍
Just for info. They will run on kerosene, diesel, paraffin. I run paraffin on mine occasionally as it burns cleaner and helps stop soot build up in combustion chamber. Also room temp sensor is built into display controller. So if you mount it high in van it turns down too quick. Mounted too low heater will never turn down as cold air etc. George
Ahh good to know George! I’ll have to check out the prices of those alternative fuels. Here’s to warm Bongo nights 😁
@VantasticIdeas Paraffin expensive. Also buy yourself an inline fuel tap and fit right next to fuel tank. Lawnmower or motorbike type. They are cheap. It's a real pain having to empty tank for servicing of heater or pump etc. Also can remove tank to fill up. Lastly remote control keep in pocket as can turn heating on if van door frozen up. I can turn mine on inside bungalow. Lastly fit a power isolation switch. They take power in off position. Especially if van goes into storage. My heater in engine compartment. Pre heats engine etc. George
Brilliant, you are very talented 👏🇦🇺
You’re very kind 😊
Can you cook stuff in the kettle?
You definitely could as it’s just a little pot essentially
Hi, do you have all the measurements etc for all your cupboards and draws etc. I want the same layout in my van. thanks
Hi, I did a dimensions video for my older version of this layout which is very similar and might give you what you need - ua-cam.com/video/ioZXs4UXc_4/v-deo.htmlsi=yJNExbhDvdwb8wZi
Очень круто!!!! Взял идею от вас. Скажите, как у вас крепится тумба со столешницей и задний ящик?
We're planning a 2week trip to Poland in our 95' Dreamer. What is the best advice when planning a long trip like that?
Don't overpack clothing, I basically lived in 1 pair of shorts and a t-shirt. One thing I wish I'd bought was a microfibre towel each so it packs small and dries fast! I was the one that always packed everything away in the van, when we moved on, so it all went back in the correct place, otherwise it can turn to chaos in a heartbeat 😂 Make sure that you can drive into the cities with your vehicle (if you're doing that) as they might have ulez style zones, so worth checking that out. Have a good trip!
@@VantasticIdeas Nice one. Not overpacking will be challenging with 2 small kiddos. Better start convincing them now. I'm also hunting for a box to be installed on bike rack which will hopefully allow for more 'essentials'. So much still to do with our 'Dreamer' Bongo. Thank you!
@@januszsiodmiak9836 It's definitely a challenge! any exterior storage is going to be great, I got a roof box for our Scotland trip and that was a godsend.
Automatic and AWD equal high fuel consumption.
Nice! Your entry into Glencoe - 8m in for the uninitiated - looked like you were filming in Black & White! What's your setup on the rear - I like the idea of the bike rack that also switched to offer a storage platform.
Thanks! yeah that day was so overcast and gloomy it had that weird eery effect, but at the same time it was very cool to look at :) The bike rack is a Fiamma rack that fits both mazda bongo and mercedes vito, I'm not sure they still sell that one anymore? it's a really sturdy rack, but if you have a rear spoiler you do need to cut it to make it fit. I have other video regarding the rack (I spray the rack black). Cheers 👍
Brilliant Video ..saved me the cost of a new switch.... My wiring had broken in the same place 👍
Great stuff, that repair is still going strong on mine! cheers 👍
That’s great! Thanks for that!
Thanks 👍
Brilliant idea 😃
Cheers 👍
I have you thought about a rechargeable USB water pump. Works with any type of water container. George video on my channel = Motorhome. Self Build. Campervan. Must Have Gadget.
I prefer the simplest method possible like this container, good old gravity for me :) I've done the water pump route before and it's just not for me on this build.
I got the exact same one from go outdoors 👍🏼
Awesome! never thought to look in GO! 👍
What size did you use??
28-30mm - The link in the description selects the size that I ordered. Cheers 👍
You will never cease to amaze me!!! Well done you... I really miss my Scooby two and each time I meet a bongonaut, I make sure to direct them to you as you made our bongo experience magical! Saludos desde Valencia!
Aw thanks Sol! I hope you guys are all well and enjoying life in Spain :)
Wow superman getting that fixed up Ian star man, great to see you back on screen, been a while
Thanks Bren! I'm just glad my van passed the MOT :)
Awesome, you’re an inspiration mate! Thanks for posting this. I’ve even bought a welder now and you’ve given me the inspiration to fix mine up myself 👌
Thanks mate! I have another video about the first time I tried welding - ua-cam.com/video/-iWuNvUKQEQ/v-deo.htmlsi=NcVmUAjbdoAU_84W
Hiya mate love the videos I 2 have a bongo with welding that needs to be done. I can’t afford garage prices but I’m fairly confident in having a go. What welder do I need? Cheers lee
I can recommend the one I have - Clarke 102NG - It's a reasonable price and the lowest amp setting is pretty good for thin metal. I used SIP brand wire in it (0.8mm) but the Clarke wire was pretty good that came with it. Best advice I got from watching UA-cam vids was to practise on lots of scrap metal and get used to it. I watched a lot of UA-cam videos on welding and that helps a lot! Welding appears to be an art form that I only really appreciated when I started welding myself :) Also be very careful with overheating the weld and sparks as it's very easy to set fire to things. Have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket. Cheers 👍
just be carefull you dont cause a fire take out the plastic steps first if welding by there and pull carpet back inside
@@chris777-c1k Definitely! I forgot to film that bit, but I did remove the step and taped up the wires in that area. The danger of causing a fire during welding is a real fear of mine!!
Really appreciate the info and tips guys
@@leedryden4502 no probs i just went to tesco and i took a giant sloppy poopy on the floor and old man slipped on it was so funny 🤣🤣
Now the rot and cruds out,get sp50 in through the drain holes in outriggers and sill ends and everywhere else you know is solid, the next place to go will be the rear end of the sills and rear lower arches(if rear arches are still original).Sp50 isnt cheap but it works.
Arches are on my to do list! I wish I could spend time with a garage ramp so I could get underneath and sort everything out properly :) Cheers 👍
Your bongo is so lovely, I'm sure you have even more reason it to love it than my own - I had the same, welding to do, I was always scared of welding, thinking it would cost me a forrtune. Thankfully whilst it wasnt cheap, it was great to get it done. I am really impressed you could do this yourself - must of saved so much money (25 quid for parts !!!) !! Did you learn to weld yourself or is it your main job (you state your note a professional, but it looks brilliant !!) ? What would you recommend to learn how to weld ? I had my sills done professiionally, but i would love to do it myself in the future ! Fantastic video - thank you and so glad your bongo is still on the road ! Could you make some videos on welding ? Horray for that pass for 8:02 !!! :D <3 thanks for your excellent content !
Hi Thanks for the feedback :) Yes I learned to weld myself from the school of UA-cam 😂 I'm very much an amateur, but can see improvement every time I give it a go! it's the think rusty metal that is the most difficult to work on (i.e. Bongo metal). I don't think I know enough about welding to put out any kind of instructional video, but there are loads of really great channels showing you how to weld already on UA-cam.
Well done on the repairs definitely worth having a portable welder with an older vehicle 👍
Oh definitely, every Bongo should come with a welder 😂
Excellent idea! I've been wanting a curtain behind the cab in my Bongo but didn't know how to fix it, this looks perfect.
Thanks. It's one of those things that I use all the time in my van! cheers 👍
Loving your channel! Have (very nearly) decided to convert a small van and am trying to understand the different base van options... So I would be really Interested in the reasons why you are so enamoured with the Mazda Bongo over some of the other types of van that are commonly converted? Cheers!
Glad you're enjoying the channel! that's a video that I intend to make one day. But for a quick answer the size and price were always something that appealed. I think as these vans are getting older I would probably look around at other vans like the Nissan NV range maybe? just to avoid having to deal with rust and other age related problems. Like I say I am hoping to do a video about this very topic! Cheers 👍
Cheers for the reply! I'm not very knowledgeable on cars (but pretty good with power tools and DIY!), but had realised that they've been out of production for a while and can have issues with rust here in the UK. I liked the look of the flexibility with the various seat options (front passenger seat being usable from behind is very cool), and particularly the electric blinds! But maybe these features can be found on more modern vans still in production (rhetorical question)?! I will continue researching, thanks for the Nissan tip, will take a look 👌🏻
keep the vids up loving them !
Thanks 👍
Very helpful fella, they are winging there way to me, by the power of amazon 😀
