Shoprite Fresh n' Juicy Jamboree commercial - circa 1985
Supermarkets/grocery stores sell such a variety of products that it's not easy to advertise in a way that builds brand distinctiveness. Shoprite really hit it off by going high production with their lavishly animated and catch "Can-Can Sale" sales where animated cabaret girls sold canned goods at a discount. The Fresh n' Juicy Jamboree doesn't hit quite as hard, but still has a catchy riff and distinct branding.

Animals are Beautiful people is a 1974 documentary, but all the other commercials I pulled off the tape are from the mid-80s, so this is likely referring to the two-day MLB strike of August 6th and 7th. New York would give up on the Westway Highway plan on September 30th 1985.

Wai Lana Yoga is a health and exercise series that ran for about 700 episodes. It featured yoga and light aerobic exercises with a backdrop of tropical coasts and gentle guitar and piano music. I think it might have appealed to people who wanted yoga, but found other yoga programs a bit too Indian.

Traveler's Checks are a wonderful solution to the problems of pre-digital banking, a great old-school idea. Karl Malden played starring roles in notable 50's/60's movies like On the Waterfront, Gypsy, A Streetcar Named Desire and How the West was Won. After a long and fruitful career his star began to fade and he appeared in some pretty lame movies like Meteor and Beyond the Poseidon Adventure....

Shogun was one of the best received TV movies of all time, up there with Roots, North and South and Stephen King's IT. Adapted from a James Clavell novel, it was remade for FX in 2024.

I was pretty young when this came out but I didn't remember PM Magazine at all but apparently it was a thing from 1978 to 1991. I do remember We Are the World.

Which one is the Garanimals? The doll? The bunny? It's the kid's clothing. The line disappeared for a while but was re-launched as a Walmart product. The department store Ames did not come back, closing down in 2002.

I recovered this from a tape containing the last thirty-ish minutes of Superbowl XXII, played on January 31st, 1988 and broadcast on ABC. I'm not sure when Superbowl commercials became a spectacle side-event, but one of those would have been a welcome addition to this one-sided, highlight-deficient 42-10 steamrolling in '88. Can you even conceive of a more boring commercial?

This one is a little strange. I try to do "unique" content on this channel. Not "original" as I didn't make it, but videos from old VHS grabs that are not copied here. There is another copy of this commercial... or there should be. ua-cam.com/video/jh7d-qxXPjI/v-deo.html But, as of the date I'm writing this (Nov 1 2024) it actually crashed out when you start it, popping directly to the end link...

I wish they'd make more movies like this anymore instead of all the superhero BS.
Only two studios are doing superheroes lately... a number more are doing spectacle heavy action films. There's probably an untapped market for a good teen comedy or two this year. They generally don't top the box office, but you can still make a good profit. Barbie was the first live action comedy to be the year's #1 movie since Beverly hills cop in '84.
