RC Construction Worksite Genset Part 4
This is the last of a 4-part series. This video covers the control panel build, some testing, and a feature demo. Watch to the end for some giggles.
When I get together with "The Guys" for an operating session, one feature that always seems to be missing is a power source for all of the stationary equipment, like trommels and lights. No longer! Now, we have one supply to power them all! Five points to Gryffindor if you get the LOTR reference.
This project spans two years and hundreds of hours. The goal is to put a big battery, fuse-protected, switched outputs, battery monitoring, battery charging, sound, lights, and some fun detail into a 1/12(1/14) scale shipping container.
Part 1 is about siting the internal components and building the mounting surfaces necessary to place them.
Part 2 is about internal wiring. So much wiring...
Part 3 is about modification of the shipping container model that I started with.
Part 4 covers the construction of the front panel.
Please note that this is not a "How To" video. It is a record of a project that I built. I offer it here in the hope that it will be useful, inspirational, or at least entertaining for someone.

This is my first attempt at a live-action video. It is nearly an hour of RC construction equipment moving material. Gardening has never been more fun! I hope that you enjoy! The wheel loader sound module has already been replaced. In upcoming videos the sound should be much less annoying. :-) BTW - More electric kayak and 3D printing content is in the works. Progress is slow. If you like this c...
How I Made Scale (ish) Gabions for RC Construction
Переглядів 3392 роки тому
This is a video log of a model gabion build. The scale is a rough estimate of 1/12-1/16. 4" x 2" x 2" is a convenient size for common 1/4" mesh. I used welded wire for these. Woven mesh will not work. It is readily available as "hardware cloth". The gravel was purchased on Amazon, but when I make these next is will use 3/4-minus from the local quarry and screen it. Ideal particle size is about ...

Just found your channel! Love it man!
Here for the Trommel!
OK. I guess I better get on it then.
Hallo bro from Indonesia🇮🇩
Hello!
Bonjour, Vous avez gagné un abonné car votre travail minucieux et soigné, je l'apprécie Merci
Merci!
Hello Sir, thank you very much for all your explanations and details on this machine which interests me very much. In short, the negative points seem not to be of great importance, not a problem. This machine weighs approximately 64 kilograms looking at the presentation on toucan rc hobby. She sits on a scale with a huge battery and the screen shows almost 64 kilograms. To move it, it's actually not easy, but it depends on the layout at home. For me, everything is on the ground floor so no worries. Thank you again for this very objective explanatory video, and it is true that for its price, if I believe your words about its capabilities, its robustness, its quality and its reliability in general then I am tempted to want to buy it soon . Looking forward, have a good weekend. 🖐️😉👍👌
Hi, and thanks for the info!
brilliant dude 👌😎😎👍👍👍
You're definitely right about the sisal mat pricing but it's within ~$5 compared to $home_store sisal rope or so to replace a rope section on my multi-level cat tower. And probably a bit cleaner in the long run. Thanks for the idea, I have two sides to replace and I'm looking forward to seeing if the cats prefer the rope or the mat 😆
You've taken down the bezel file from Thingiverse, how are we supposed to not build this thing?
I didn't remove the bezel. I'll investigate when I get some time.
@@uselessstuff8031 Thanks! I’ve just inherited this oven for doing some powder coating and if I can get double use out of it for filament drying I’ll be even happier.
Hello, can I buy one of this box from you? This product looks great.
I all most got the 6015B but I got a 1/8 scale cat 385CF weigh's in at a whopping 330 lb's and it can lift 250lb's very happy with my choice. The 6015 is a beast too. Great review.
I just ordered that same one how long did take to get to you and how are you liking it
On site power house! One of thr first things to setup on remote sites!
I've got one to it an easy 140lbs.
There seems to be very little difference in owning this and a real mini excavator, ( cost wise ) of coarse you can earn very good money on the real thing and as you say, just moving the model outside, surly defeats any enjoyment of owning such a piece of model engineering equipment, so it becomes a self queen... People who own 5" gauge live steam locomotives, also endure these weight problems, with just getting the things out of their workshops and on to the track, a major undertaking, so apart from steaming on special days of the year, the rest, again just a shelf queen..but as with the steam engines, your model will become a collectors item and to be enjoyed as such...nice review ..
💪
I am driving the A40g daily great job
Sounds like a fun job!
great video! my original speaker is dead ! ... where i can buy a new one !?
I recommend that you first go to the seller and ask if they can sell you a spare.
this is a cool video, well that being said, it means everyone is going to be wanting to advertise in it....
Thank you!
Everyone has a different environment. But I've found that the printer alone makes enough heat to keep everything warm. I stopped trying to "upgrade" everything because none of it made a difference. With the one exception of the all metal hot end. Keeping drafts off of ABS and PETG are pretty critical.
My printer's environment is pretty hostile. The upgrades did make noticeable difference for me. In the end, I "upgraded" to a more modern printer.
I found out that this problem of the sound being out of sync is due to the use of the digital mode. You need to wire it to mix mode. The ESC is special. Digital mode only works with just basic ESC's
Thanks for the advice. I did try both mix and analog modes. For me, the issue was that the sound isn't synthesized, it is recorded sound samples. The samples play at a fixed rate for a fixed duration. If my operation doesn't match that cadence, and it normally doesn't, then it just sounds weird.
What I've done in the past is set the appliance to always be on, maximum temperature, for safety you could set it to a lower value, wire the relay to control a standard electrical socket and then have the PID controller switch the socket on and off when the set temperature is reached. With the appliance connected to the controlled plug socket, temperature is set at and controlled by the PID controller. I do like your approach since it results in a more finished product and provides more accurate temperature control.
Hey there. I wonder what the name of the sound file you are using is called :D
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
I hope that your project went well.
I feel like i am at NASA's jet propulsion laboratory, 😂 started nice in second video I'm totally lost, great videos, I'm in.
I'm sure I could do better in presenting the content so that it makes more sense to viewers.
@uselessstuff8031 could you please tell me if these tires have hard foam inserts, because they seem quite hard in the video. Thanks!
I honestly have no idea what's in the tires. I've wondered myself, but I've never been curious enough to remove one. I didn't know what trouble I might invite by doing so.
Apparently the annoying sound when stopping or overdriven is the braking action of the ESC
A while back I spent some time looking into this. I wondered if it might be related to the active braking function, but couldn't find a way to disable the feature. What it's doing is driving square pulses back onto the main power supply from the battery. The pulses are about 4V in amplitude. The sound module apparently lacks any kind of filtering on its power input, so it couples that electrical noise through to the sound output. I may record a video on this at some point.
TIG welding outside, or anywhere that there is a fair amount of air movement, is not advised as it is near impossible to get a decent weld. The wind blows the shielding gas coming out of the torch away from the molten metal puddle. If you do somehow manage to get the pieces TIG welded under those conditions, the weld will probably be porous and extremely weak poor and look like hell.
Thanks for the advice. I don't recall if I considered that factor at the time, but I didn't have a way to set up the camera indoors. In the end I did the welding inside.
hi friend great job, is possible do you share your blower stl file? i like that kkk
HI. If you are referring to the toolhead and part cooling fan, the file you want is in this Thing: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2494642.
Just bought my own toaster oven that I’m gonna try to use without modifying it but if necessary I’m probably gonna throw a 3D printer enclosure heater in it and call it a day. Or maybe an only heat bed from a broken printer. A lot safer than fucking around with AC lol.
Where did you purchase the plastic box and what is make and model? Link possibly.. Great job on your project!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback! Please see previous comments for sourcing the box.
NICE ! You superman !
Thanks!
Nice
💯
I’m just kind of jumping around this video at the moment. Looking to build something for my Neptune 3 Max, which looks to be roughly the same size as your machine. I’m curious what printer you have?
CR-10S5
@@uselessstuff8031 Excellent! Thanks. Have you done ABS in your enclosure? That's what I'm researching for.
Never tried ABS. Sorry. I don't have the necessary ventilation in my work area. I'm having success with ASA on a Bambu X1C.
@@uselessstuff8031 10-4, and thanks 👊🏽
nice build! I want to use the same killswitch on my box, but I have doubts about how it is installed. I thought it had to be installed on one of the battery cables, but I see that they use red and black but I can't distinguish where you connect it. Could you help me resolve these doubts? thank you!
Thanks for your comment and question. I can't speak for all kill switches. The switch that I used cannot handle the full load current as seen by the battery. So it has to have some other way of turning everything off. In my case I used a relay to control battery isolation for other reasons. So the kill switch went in the relay coil circuit.
@@uselessstuff8031 Thank you very much for your answer!
Is that fan noise I hear to circulate the air inside the oven? I would think that's important for filament drying.
Yep. That's the fan.
I like this style of video. Good job!
The most critical part of builds like this is a parts list with links.
I record videos of my projects to share what I'm doing with the world. I don't claim to be a subject matter expert. And it's not a business. I get nothing for the effort. If my UA-cam channel were a business, then I might feel it necessary to indulge viewers' sense of entitlement. As it is, I have so little time and recording/editing/publishing videos, even the crappy videos that I make, makes it almost prohibitive. Needing to do other people's projects for them would make the whole endeavor a non-starter. For the viewers that bother to watch the whole series, I give more than enough information about the parts that I chose and my reasons for choosing them, for people who are willing to take the initiative to source their own parts. The other reason that I don't publish a BOM is that the minute I do, someone in China will suck it up and start mass-producing copies and selling them for less than I can buy the parts. If I leave some details for others to figure out, it will limit this practice to those companies that have mojo to do so.
@@uselessstuff8031 it's called being thoughtful. Has nothing to do with entitlement. Your videos are great. A BOM would be nice for your viewers.
@@TheWoodHaven I apologize. I hear a fair amount of entitlement from viewers and I interpreted your comment the same way. I believe thoughtfulness and consideration for others to be important. In ideal circumstances I would enjoy delivering the full package. As it is, it's just not feasible to provide and maintain the design collateral that goes along with most of my projects. I thank you for your feedback.
Sir is that an 18 gauge pipe you're holding or an actual 1970's microphone with the foam ball missing? Lol love the build it helps alot P.S. i been failing. Badly at TIG welding for 22 years so i try and use my MIG for everything...TIG is a PITA
Hahaha! Just a scrap of aluminum tube. 😆 Thanks for your support.
We care, print a Yak!
Much appreciation and respect for sharing your layout, design and validation! Those round 7pin connectors are available with metal threaded, gasket caps on a bead chain. Ever consider putting a mercury sw on the relay to interrupt the draw in the event of a rollover, as Yaks sometimes do?🤓
Thanks for the feedback! I could have gone further with ruggedization, but I had to draw a line somewhere. The box was already pretty expensive and I don't need MIL-810 or MIL-202 compliance. On the mercury switch, it's an interesting idea. I don't think I need to get that sophisticated. If the yak flips, I'm falling off anyway.
@@uselessstuff8031 lol, that prop keeps turning, rightside up or not!
Curious about the weight distribution with the batt. so far rearwards? In regards to the pot submitted below....you'll need to find solution for sealing shaft (i.e. o-ring in compressed housing/fitting mounted to outside of box) Simple plastic cad project.
Humm....noise? I too have had this issue,my solution was (for what it's worth) was to shield the cable length with metal duct tape (grounded on both sides) with a ferrite bead on the receivers end. I didn't coil the cable afterwards, I just stuffed it in my hull "Willy Nilly". I realize some of this is different for you being in a "Box", have you probed anything with a scope yet?
Kapton tape...nice touch! You too must be a man who's read a few datasheets and specifications?
I like the way you explained inductive crossover, surprised you didn't suggest ferrite beads too? LOL, Any plans to validate this concept in a trashcan full of water?
I like your style! I laugh myself sick when I see people using SAE bulkhead/ cable connectors for a marine application thinking they're safe!?!? PS-5200 adhesive makes for a great solution for mounting objects without any holes, the downside is trying to remove them.
You seem very knowledgeable. Do you know how to deactivate indicator sounds on a Volvo Dumptruck or a Huina K988-100?
Sorry. I don't know anything about that model. I would want to turn off the indicator sound also.
Subbed. Only thing missing was the decals i think
Do you think it would be possible to run the ESC signal for the hydraulic pump through the sound module as well? Perhaps though that second lead? I would like the engine REVs to increase with the hydraulic pump. What is the name/model/brand of the stock module? Thanks!
I tried to do the same and was not able to make it work. It might be possible if you have a radio with more channels and more mixers available. I was not able to determine the name/model/brand of the stock sound module.
great video
Thanks!
I got the dry box at bhphotovideo.com. Please see link in comments below.
