Kerosene Annie on the Prony Brake at WMSTR Rollag 2022
It was probably one of the drunks that camped across from us this year, seems like something they'd do.
@lembriggs1075 I see you have come back to this video and commented more than once about the engineer's incompetence, so I wanted to clarify some information as to why you are incorrect. As evident by the dark stack, the engine has already been heavily fired and is running wide open throttle, on the governor, at no load. The pressure is right on the edge of lifting the safety valve. It has a raging fire and its producting steam at a very high rate, so it needs to start using up steam quickly before it pops off. This is the exact conditions the engineer wants for a run on the brake, so he whistles to indicate to the brakeman to begin loading the engine down. This will increase the steam consumption to match with the steam production rate so that it will hold constant right at the maximum pressure. At that point the engineer moves down to the lower platform, probably to turn on the injector. Nothing about this situation would prompt closing the throttle. That would be the last thing any engineer would want to do at that moment, and theres no indication that he was even near the clutch lever to mistakenly grab it. The story I was told was that the clutch actually engaged itself, but not in the traditional way. The clutch on these engines has a large floating bearing that rides on the crankshaft inside of the flywheel. Because of constant wear and the weight of the clutch assembly on one area of the bearing, they tend to wear oblong. This engine's clutch had recently been rebuilt by re-bushing it back to original tight tolerances. Unfortunately, the oil hole was blocked, meaning no oil could get to the bearing. The friction from the lack of lubrication and the high engine speed caused the clutch bearing to essentially friction weld itself to the crankshaft, resulting in its sudden unexpected movement. This probably baffed the engineer, as the lever would have still been in the unengaged position, and probably contributed to why the engine continues to run away for so long, as the engineer is trying to throw the clutch out, to no avail. The video cuts off, but I can only hope that within a few seconds he overcame the shock and was able to get to the throttle and reverser to shut it down before the engine went far enough to hit something/someone. Again, this is just the story I was told, so take it with a grain of salt.
watching the video it happens as the engineer gets back up to the steering position. you see that rust colored shirt, and the guy kinda appears right as the engine starts backing up. I suspect he grabbed the bottom side of the clutch lever as he got back into the steering position. right between 28 seconds and 29 seconds when it starts rolling. I spent 15 years running smaller case traction engines, and the two 110s ive been around are setup almost exactly like them, and I have done the same, well at least using the clutch lever to help me up from kneeling on the foot plate.
@@sycamorevalleyshops2841 Don't the Case over-center clutches engage by snapping them forward though? So grabbing it to pull yourself up couldn't engage it.
Pull to engage
Can you get the hauler?
I'm not sure if they produced that hauler. I could be wrong, but I haven't come across one yet.
@@porkinbunnies4649 Oh okay you could make a custom hauler for Burger King!
I wish they would have done the Cotton Owens Dodge that David Pearson won his first championship in 1966, I have the 1969 Holman Moody Ford Torino Talladega and this 1971 Mercury Cyclone. The Dodge would be the icing on the cake.
I just ordered 4 of them... based on your review. THANKS.
I see what he did. He whistled that he wanted to idle down to put a fire in, then when he wanted to pull the throttle out, he grabbed the clutch lever instead and didn’t even catch his own mistake. Was probably focusing too much on audience and putting on a good show of what a good engineer he wanted to be.
Thank God nobody got hurt
These old tractors are amazing 🤩 I went to a few of these events this year 👍
Looks like an incompetent operator or that he likes yanking on levers! Or maybe pulled the wrong lever. That’s not just a maladjusted clutch. It’s an operator who made a big mistake! Hope nobody got hurt.
Job
Well shit. Now that can't be good. 😺🇺🇸
The tags are one of my favourite features; I have several jerseys from Owayo.

I'm guessing
So at the point of da hell with dis I'm out what he an torque is that thing how much weight on the pony brake?
Incredibly rare tractor there! Very cool to see it do a bit of belt work. Curious how much power they got out of it that day? I believe it's rated for 70 on the belt, just wondering if they got anywhere close to that.
Did you make it like this and add the logo and how much

Hey! I was curious if there would be any way you’d consider selling this to me? I’m a die hard AD fan and am hunting this super hardcore!
Dobby is free!!!!!!!!!!
Always chock the wheels.
Unless it’s heavy, anchored in place and covers 2/3rds of the wheel, I’m not sure your average wheel chocks is going to hold that beast in place.
@@whodahellru8124 You’re kidding. On the slope of the rail, the wait of the train, even a couple of pair chocks clamped to rails would prevent roll.
@@larryscott3982 I’ve seen less powerful vehicles roll over chocks. Anything can happen … it’s better to try and be careful than not at all.
@@whodahellru8124 You should’ve at least googled railroad wheel chocks.
@@larryscott3982 but it’s not on rails … 🤔
I just ordered the autographed version. Rip to the silver fox. Now I need to try and get Leonard Wood’s autograph on it at Dover or pocono next year.
Hey, our team is looking to get some jerseys for our season which starts up in about 5-7 weeks. If we order from Owayo could we expect to have them in for the season or should we look elsewhere?
That whistle loving it!

Thanks for posting that. It was good to see it from a bit different angle. I was running the engine here.
Of course! Thank you for doing what you do. I actually remember you from Steam School a few years back. I am glad you enjoy the video. It would be awesome to get more of this engine.
Any idea as to why the steam engine suddenly backed up? Somebody accidentally hit the lever ?
The reverse grabbed on its own due to play in the linkage. This video now serves as a warning to owners of this type to check for such wear and shim it out to avoid accidents.
@@renegadeoflife87 it’s easy for the shims to wear down as they’re just wood
@@alexblough5739 Shims? No. The shoes are wood. If they wear down they only thing that would happen is the clutch won't engage. If you watch closely the operator was climbing back up on the platform where the engineer sits and he accidentally engaged the clutch. It was a stupid mistake. He's lucky the belt didn't hit anyone and he's lucky there was nobody behind the engine when it took off.
😀
Really good looking car, I'm starting to pick up some of Tony's diecast. I've recently gotten a few different diecast after seeing your reviews on here. Got Kevin Harvick's first race diecast and his brickyard win in the past two weeks. Older diecast have better quality so I'm focusing on them now.
I've got that car, looking for the white and black # car he won at Atlanta on his 3rd start. Very cool book by the way.
If I see one I'll let you know!
@@porkinbunnies4649 Thanks!
@@gclem6132 There is one of those Harvick cars (black and white) on eBay for $39.99. If you search 2001 Kevin Harvick diecast it should show up

Love this car, great review. Im gonna buy one now.

That's awesome! It's always cool to meet the operators!
By any chance, would you be willing help with a video during next year's show? It would be cool to do one with an operator and you could explain how everything works. I think a lot of people would find that interesting.
@@porkinbunnies4649 yeah that'd be awesome!
That's awesome! Sounds like a plan. We will have to keep in touch!
You should try that on the road
Good running Case! It was great seeing it at Rollag this year!
Kenny Kizzle Thanks! It was great having it there! Looking forward to the Case Expo next year! Hopefully I'll have my DC Case out there as well! You coming out again next year?
Yessir! I will be there! I just have to get the time off work. I plan on getting my '41 Center Exhaust SC out there as well. Should be a head turner - don't see many of them (although there were two there this year). I'm curious to see how many come out of hiding - I have a registry I have been keeping to keep track of how many of them are left. So far, after several years of searching, I am at 48 remaining center exhaust tractors.
Sounds like a very nice running H! I hope to make it to Rollag this year. We will see, as I am headed to Andover, SD the weekend after to see the unveiling of the Case 150 HP Steamer that the Anderson family is building!
Kenny Kizzle Thank you! That would be great if you could make it out to Rollag! I was also thinking about trying to make it to Andover for the unveiling, if there is time. Hopefully I'll see you around!
Your betta looks really nice. Your filter looks a little strong try adding a aquarium sponge to lower it.

PorkinBunnies Yes. I believe they cost 10 or less dollars don't remember. Could be way cheaper lol.

Jay Andr Nice! Do you come out every year? I think it is the best place on Earth!
I went every year until I was 18yrs old... then missed a few... then finally went this year! I love it too
I was working on the prony brake 3ft from the other end of that belt when it snapped. Scary stuff. Thanks for posting this.
Chris Baird No problem. I'm glad you are okay. That was by far the scariest thing I have seen throughout the years. I hope it doesn't happen again.
How in the sam hell did that steam traction engine go in gear like that omg there not supposed to do that im glad ur ok and im glad it didn't hurt or kill or ran over nobody
@@harrybobb6927 They don't accidentally, either someone engaged the clutch or the pinion started to seize on the crank shaft.
