For several years I have been on UA-cam with my channel PaleoHikerMD, where I share my outdoor adventures and enjoy reviewing outdoor related products. Over time I have become more and more interested in "making", whatever it may be. I have enjoyed woodworking over time, and have started to get more serious about it. This type of video did not really fit in on my first channel, so I've decided to start this new channel to show my journey as I try to become a better woodworker and maker!
My shop is fairly small, and my tools are limited due to that size. I hope to share over time the kind of projects you can make even with limited space. I'll be concentrating on general DIY around the house, small woodworking projects. wood turning on my Nova wood lathe, and much more! Thanks for watching, and please consider subscribing.

How To SAFELY Remove and Clean a Coleman Stove or Lantern Tank Check Valve

I have recently gotten more into vintage stoves, and am gearing up to do some full fledge restorations on some vintage stoves, including multiple Coleman stoves. Simple DIY Food Safe Finish: Beeswax and Raw Linseed Oil
@PaleoMakerMD do you have the link for the check valve removal tool? I see many on ebay and some say 200 or 220 and up. I would like to make sure and get the right one. GOD Bless you and your family
Just what I needed Thank you 👍🙌
Has anyone ever used iron dust, debris and bb with a magnet to clean the generator?
This video was a great help to get the 520 stove I acquired going. I acquired one, and a MilSpec lantern, when a guy noticed my Army Jeep, and offered the pair to me for $50, as his wife wanted him to clean some of his crap out of the garage.
Mine 1977, was lighting but barely. I had left gas in it over the years. Then I took it apart and cleaned it, the pins and springs were seized. Now it does'nt work so good. I ordered a new generator, pretty much the only piece we can order, hope that it will fix the flame. Beside's that I have no clue.
What printer and pla is used?
You did a nice job on the overhaul of stove but I didnt see you preheat the stove before trying to light. The pressure is to force fuel up and out and into the prehit cup . Just open full fir a few sec. Then turn iff , then light fuel in preheat cup and let burn until almost out ( stand by with lighter in case needed) open fuel and it should light off remaining flame from preheat,if not use the lighter. A couple of pumps after yiu get it lit will help keep it burning nicely l.
Why you stoped
You never did a full review on it on your other video!!
I’m an83 year old gram. Bought a 502 at auction and let sit too long. Little rusty and clogged. Used to watch my dad work like you did. Thank you I truly enjoyed watching you fix this sweet little stove!!
Mine works good also. I bought mine in 1974 and still lights and boils water. Great stove and video.
Justfound one in old house
I have one of those from my grandfather. It still has the manual in it. I did a basic cleaning on it around 30 years ago. Got it out the other day, put some gas in it and fired it up. It works like a champ. Funny part is when you you put it away and then open it back up, it stinks of old gas (which is what I found out after opening it back up after 30 years).
I paid 20 Euros last week. Why are they so expensive on Ebay? Just because they are a collector`s item, or do they have any advantage above a normal camping gas stove?
it has its collectors tax. it is no longer made, and it was made to last unlike nowdays products, so theres that too. it has liquid fuel advantages over gas stoves, but thats for every liquid vs gas stove. tbh you could get msr or primus that would outperform this little stove but this one is magical and stood is time proven so its an amazing piece of gear.
I love the patina of heavily used, lovingly maintained, and immaculately clean.
Good stuff. It is just as fast and easy to tie cordage into a storage knot, imo. Look up "gasket coil."
Thank you for posting this! I'm now ready to get my M1942 stove back in action!
I recently got a Coleman 502 and noticed it dose not pressurize when I pump it up. What could be causing that the check valve or the pump leather?
I got one of these but a GI stove that's painted. In very good condition and includes the repair kit. Someday I'll have to do a full cleaning. Thanks for the video!
Hay dude. Really like your videos. I faund a M1942 on a marketplace, by the research I've foud your videos, they helped me a lot by the disassembly of mine, thank you for that. I've done it nearly the same as you, disassembled it completely, except I,ve bent and then broke the cleaning neadle at the base, I have a replacement neadle but can't get the old out. The stoves and especially the parts for it a pretty rear in my homeland, ex-Yugoslavia(easter Europe). So, now i,am thinkink of trying to somehow get the old out or drill and tap it again. Searching for tips, any help is welcome
Should do a p2
What are examples of food safe filaments?
Do they still make them? Been looking around and I can't find a new or similar type of stove.
Some good ideas in this video.
Why are your ears upside down?
Thanks for the video, you gained a subscriber
Great very therapeutic well done zen stove
Bravo i love Svea 123...r.❤❤❤
I have a 1983 from my Dad (I was born in 77), and the thing is damn near immaculate.
Friendly reminder - raw linseed oil is food-safe, but boiled linseed oil will produce toxic chemicals that make it non-safe for human consumption. Could you heat up the beeswax first separately and then mix them up? Or otherwise take your time and make sure to keep the heat low!
I know it is Old but Man! Thous Prints came out very nice //good Job Thanks for the content very useful.
Careful with the match box!! When i was a kid we made small firecrackers by putting matches and strikers in enclosed spaces. i would not recommend it!
I want one
I want one 109 pm
Food safe products have to be printed on a food safe machine. That said there arent any dedicated food safe machines i know of considering they all can be sanitized, BUT once a non-foodsafe material goes through it its no longer a food safe machine due to residues left behind.
Thanks. i'll be sure to ignore this
Can't you just spray carb cleaner down there and rinse out the tank afterward with a little naphtha?
where can i order replacement parts?
Mine is a m1950 in mint condition just sold it to a good friend yesterday
I have one that's almost in mint condition from the factory but I don't know how to take the wrench off don't want to scratch it
That is nice! And an easy build.
Underbart❤❤❤❤
I just picked up a 1945 520 this weekend. Only missing the funnel. Need to disassemble, clean and fire it up! Didn’t even know it was a Coleman until this vid
Finally, good instructions on how to disasemble a 1942 Mountain stove. I've had a really nice one that needs the fount to be resealed with some Coswell sealer.
I'm currently facing an issue where I can't completely screw in the pump, and that leaves me wondering whether it'll be enough to form pressure to start the stove. But I'll find out once I get my seals.
Can you leave a link to the exact check valve removal tool you have? The one I have isn’t working on my 530. Thanks.
Just bought one an A47 model 530. Check valve was frozen, but got it working. Think it’s my favorite stove so far.
dreams
I have one of these that was either my grandfathers or dads. Also a 220B lantern i had found. The pocket stove was working good for a while but if i recall has a leak somewhere. I should go through it and see if i can get it running because i want to add a ss mesh screen mantle and use it as an radiant heater.
I just picked up a very similar stove, same model and condition, at an estate sale for less than $10. I plan to clean it up as shown here and resell it. Thanks for the informative video.
I just saw one on eBay for £650!!!
Cool😊
