What zone are you in?
Hey. Zone 5b.
Keep posting! Really appreciate your stuff
Would love to see what they look like 12 years later since posting this video 😊
Good morning Scott. I am somewhat new to zone pushing here in Waterloo, ON. I have one Windmill and I wintered it similar to how you did. My question has to do with heating. Do you use C9 Christmas Lights? It seems that you did something different for your palm in the front. Super curious!! Secondly, I got my palms from retailer who gets trees from Florida. Do you think it is better to get one from Salt Spring Island or somewhere in BC or does it matter? Love the look of your tracki in your front yard!!!
Thanks for your comment. I used c9 bulbs on my palm in the backyard this past winter. I used them more often in the past. I’ve also tried the heat tape method. Using a space heater is billet proof. C9s should typically do the job as long as you have venting and have them hooked up to a thermo cube. My large palm tree in the front has a space heater. I have grown palms from salt spring island and they seem to do the same as palms that I had from Florida. I think once they get established in your garden and make it through a few years, I’m not sure if it honestly matters where they came from. The large palm in the front is from Northern Florida. It’s taken temps around -12c when covered. -9c when uncovered.
As an experienced landscaper, taxpayer, and citizen concerned about the impacts of invasive species, I am disappointed and frustrated that Vineland Research and Innovation Center, which as "Canada's leader in horticulture research and innovation," has incorporated many invasive plants like Periwinkle, Japanese Spurge, Siberian Squill, English Ivy, Forsythia and Burning Bush into their landscaping. Invasive plants are causing massive harm to the environment, the economy and even human health in our area. The costs to control them in Canada run into the hundreds of millions of dollars per year. When they escape into natural areas, they disrupt or even destroy ecosystems, which in turn can impact populations of native butterflies, bees, and other insects as well as birds and other wildlife. Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, which is supported by our tax dollars, claims to have sustainability as part of their mission and integrity as one of their core values. An organization cannot claim to be sustainable and have integrity when it is featuring invasive species on its property. Every year, this facility has hundreds or possibly thousands of visitors, and the message they are getting from the looks of the grounds is, "It's fine to grow invasive plants. After all, Canada's leader in horticulture research and innovation is doing so!" I've tried expressing my concerns to the Vineland folks but have not gotten very far with them. I am hoping that by focusing public attention on this problem, they might be motivated to take action. To my fellow citizens, I ask you all to please be cautious about what plant species you buy and grow in your garden. Always google a species before you buy. Unfortunately many garden centers are still selling invasive plants, ones that can cause immense ecological harm if they escape into nature. Ecosystems in our area are already under enough threat. All of us who garden should have "Do No Harm" as our motto.
Today has it recovered fully ?
I had a similar set back this winter but it’s still kicking.
Do the windmills need heating and cover or just cover?
Yeah they require heat if you truly want to get them through the winter and look good.
Great intro Scott. Glad your palms look great
Thanks very much!
Palm tree 🌴 love
I certainly do enjoy watching your videos and seeing some of your new ideas being used for winterizing. Please do check in, once in a while.👋😀 Let's go Blue Jays.
Sounds good Alex. Thanks for the comment.
Hey Scott, always looking forward to see updates from you. Keep them up. Your palms look great. Cheers from Windsor.
Cheers back!
Nice update! Things look good, love the one up front!
Thank you!
Nice to see your update. I chuckled when you mentioned the "bad haircut" look 😁 . I get what you mean about having a hard time finding motivation to continue with posting videos. My bet is that you inspire a good number of people to push the zone limits with palms even if they don't comment.
Thanks for the wonderful comment! You’ve done lots of inspiring on your channel! Hope all is well in VB.
@ScottyOn1 things are good here on my end. Just waiting for consistent warmer weather. Have a great rest of your week!
Looking good! It’s great to see the blooms pushing up already.
Looking good 🌴
Everything looks great!
Wow man the one in front looks amazing and I have to say everything else looking good too even the Trachy in the back with all its problems! That guy sure is a survivor and please don't get rid of it lol. You've been my #1 inspiration to do what I do and I appreciate all you've done to educate me and I'm sure alot of us and please stick around man, your the best!!
Thanks Sandor. We learn from each other! Can’t wait to see how you made out.
@@ScottyOn1 Thanks Scott and thanks for your help!
My friend Sandor sent me. He got me hooked on palms Welcome to spring in Ontario lol. My son and my sister live in Kingston. Your out front looks huge for here. Flower stocks... Wow
Welcome. And thanks! They have never flowered when covered. There are also about 6 other stalks just starting to emerge that I didn’t show in the video.
@@ScottyOn1 sounds amazing. Great job
Looking forward to it!
Love the video Scott, your palms are looking amazing. I still yet to fully uncover my palm but I am starting to take off the cover during the days.
Won’t be long!
@@ScottyOn1 for sure and it’s really nice to see temperatures rise quickly now instead of the lingering cold of winter that we have received.
wowwww
thank you for the great clip 😃🙌🏽Cheers from Austria
Windmill Palm Winter Protection 1
Looks good, all ready for the winter!
I don't understand covering... Don't palms need at least some Sunlight to live? Can they be wrapped like a mummy for the winter without being opened up every few days? Can you explain how long they're wrapped like this? And how often do you have to take that off to let them breath, so to speak?
Hi. They stayed wrapped all winter. Not all types of palms could handle this type of care in winter, but Chinese Windmill palms can.
@@ScottyOn1 Ok, thanks for the reply.
Much love from the Islamic Republic of the Bahariterra Islands.
I’m sure you have lots of palms there!
@@ScottyOn1 quite a fair amount
It’s like “the little Palm that could!” Is this just straight Trachycarpus fortunei or one of the more hardy cultivars?
Just a straight Trachy.
That Cover, even though it looks like “Jenna Tallia” probably is easier than constructing a greenhouse over the palms. The first part of this video is exactly why I wouldn’t trade my 10 years of Nursery experience for anything! They’ll teach you (at nurseries) how to twine up trees & make those canopies tiny! I’d make a video how to tie up canopies for shipping, but I don’t have any of my trachycarpus in the ground…
It surprising because most of my palms over the years have breezed through winter even down to -12 celcius even over an extended period of over a week and snow does not harm them in any way ,these palms grow on the mountains of China and regularly see these temps and snow 😀
I'm so glad I don't have to go through this every winter ,I live in the UK and our winters are not to cold which allows a lot of different species of palms to survive without protection
Great video, amazing job!
Thanks!! It’s all done for the year!
@@ScottyOn1 Awesome, love the dedication! Can’t wait to see them in spring!
Well done man seriously. You make this look easy and seamless. I was struggling doing it by myself. Getting poked in the face with the fronds, it wasn’t pretty lol. The Windmill in the front looks incredible. How big is the trunk?
Thanks for your kind words! The trunk is over 6 feet now. It’s always good to have a helping hand.
@@ScottyOn1 Beast
how long was your power affected and was it just on your outdoor power outlets? Just wondering why the trachys took such a hit.
Was this before the cayenne pepper?
Prior to that.
I see guys online zone pushing with much more fronds but they still manage to wrap. Why so challenging that you need to cut so many off? 🤔 It was hard to watch.
Haha. I know what you’re saying. I try to make it as simple as possible. I used to leave them all on. I tried to make it as slim as possible.
@@ScottyOn1 I would would just work over a few days if I needed to, to ensure that lovely canopy stayed in tact.
@@ScottyOn1 Good setup. A 3' plastic chicken wire fence might wrangle those fronds tightly together next year.
@@tntropics I’ve used snow fencing with luck before too. Thanks.
hi Scott so the Cayenne pepper worked out for you, I see?
Awesome idea hope tree is good
Thanks. I just put it away for the winter! It had a great season.
Nice video! Crazy that it's already trying to flower!
I know, right. It was so warm up till a few days ago. I guess it’s confused.
The rose cones at 7 minutes seem to have a shape providing no rootball protection from severe ground freezes in a polar vortex.
Good call! I’m going to pile up some mulch around the base. Thanks!
Stop, stop cutting fronds🥴🥴. That's a nice "weiner" you've got there....😉😉 Where did you purchase that zipper tarp? Bungee to attach fronds, great idea I'll be using this trick. Instead of using hockey tape, lol.
Your Trachy was looking pretty great, I have to admit it hurt me a little to see you cutting off all those fronds. In my head I kept saying "stop" whenever you would take a break. Good luck this winter, I hope the mice stay away.
Hahaha...that's exactly how I felt...kept saying ok stop...
Haha. It’s like getting a bad haircut and you can’t tell the barber to stop!
@@ScottyOn1 🤣
It all looks so good!
Thank you!!
cayenne pepper?
Keep those mice out! 🐁 I had a bad experience with them 2 years back!
@@ScottyOn1 I'm definitely trying you method with rats. Looks great!!
What’s that white stuff falling from the sky? 😢
Too early! Is this normal? ❄️
Nice setup Scott. How long are your petioles on your big Trachy? Interesting look…..totally different from my Trachy which has long petioles.
Maybe 2.5 feet?
Great job and great ideas Scott! I'm always looking to be more efficient so these vids always help.
Thanks Sandor!
Great video. I love the fact you have had no frost yet. Our first light frost was September 24.
Thanks Marc. Good old Lake Ontario!
Really nice video Scott
Thanks Joe!!
