Apparently Video Essay Losers Are Making Silent Hill 2 Something It's Not
Discussing the community war happening between sh2 remake and og fans. The conversation has died down a bit but the week the remake launched there was a lot of this going around.

Silent Hill 2 - The Moment Video Games Truly Became Art

Silent Hill 2 is a deeply sophisticated generational work of art. In this video I cover a light retrospective and discuss the many influences that inspired the team. The major narrative influences like Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris , Along with the aesthetics and sound design from films like Jacobs Ladder and The Shining. Understanding what inspired the original team can help form a deeper perspec...

Complainers are killing the game. Terminal Attack is not that great but, world tour is essentially ranked quick cash with no sbmm. You still play against good teams obviously if you make it to the third round. There's still 3 stacks playing the game.

Blasphemous is great! You should try out Valdis Story Abyssal City. That game has the best combat imo
@@GarredHATES thats a new one. Ill look into it
Tbh I prefer remake over original. Im a diehard fan of the originals but prefer almost everything from the remake Idk why people are even bothering comparing the game The remake isn’t bad The original isn’t bad They’re both amazing and deserve to be respected and seen as almost the same level What people do is childish, the game is great and the original is great too people just need to accept that both games are amazing and still are silent hill 2 Both are amazing and need to be treated as if they’re the same. It’s not identical but be proud we’re atleast even getting remakes and attention showed to our beloved franchise. There should be no arguments or debates and only acceptance that we are finally getting something that shines a brighter light onto our community and beloved franchise
Unfortunately i could never enjoy the OG SH2. I loved SH1 and 3, but i legit did not understand the story of 2. After watching lore videos around SH, i eventually went down the rabit hole of 2. Hot dang is that game's story an absolute masterpiece. The remake let me enjoy the story, while also being a "new game". I had already played the OG, and was disappointed at the time because i didnt understand it. The remake is an absolute win for me, but I understand some of your points
@@JoeBob189 I think sh1 could benefit from a remake. Id like to see 3 left alone but it definitely wont be. Gotta to brush up on my sh3 lore. I always so invested in 2 that alot of 3 went my over my head. So i feel you.
I love both. I wish some things were kept in the remake or taken out. Not a fan of more puzzles and how much more enemies there are cause sometimes less is truly more. Aside from that the remake was great. The original is great and I’ll admit the gameplay isn’t too good by today’s standards but it’s still fun. We can love and appreciate both
I liked the puzzles, but the combat and absurd amount of enemies didnt feel good at all.
Picked up blasphemous from the steam sale because it people said it was the best metroidvania in a while. Game is annoying as shit hard and clunky controls. I mean i hate games with controls that feel like there's imput lag. Like I'm playing a streaming game service or old NES games. I have to relearn and account that I need to hit the button 1-1.5 seconds before I want to make the jump, parry, or attack.
@@jasonsledge7900 I also hate games with input delay. Like the mortal kombats. I really dont rememeber blasphemous being like that.
@@adamsunderland0823 There's a bit of a delay like I'm playing a streaming service game but I'm slowly getting used to it. It's just lame that it takes a solid second to parry or half to slide or attack. Like playing a NES game.
I love Silent Hill 2 and the Remake but I never needed to have watched David Lynch or Twin Peaks to appreciate the series. You legit sound like an insecure "Video Essay Loser" making the series sound like a crappy, experimental, art film.
Insecure? Lol. Sureeeee. SH2 is very much like an experimental student film. And being a fan lynch just adds to the experience. Since the original devs were heavily influenced by his work and reflected that in their games.
I like the remake a lot as an og fan. But it made me appreciate the original game even more. Its so fucking untouchable. Great video man fuck these haters!!
As someone who grew up on the OG games, its nice to see someone who actually knows their shit speak up. Great video man, had to subscribe.
@@DrYamsMD Ive been holding off on my actual review because of the backlash. I dont want to spend a month arguing with casuals who never even played the original. 7/10 tho
My man Adam I grew up playing games with tank controls and had no problem with tank controls but never got around to Sh2 because I was too scared as a kid. I’m grown up and I’ve played both games now. Very sorry to say man but me and the vast majority of people believe the remake is miles better😂. The og level design isn’t near as good and the game gives u way too much ammo. I just never once was really scared in the og. The remake fixes this and gives u way less ammo. The monsters are actually a threat too and u can’t just run by them everytime. Og is still okay but the bloober literally took the job and made everything better.
@@SawyerThessing The vast majority of casuals and a few people that actually played the original. Thats the truth. Most people that grew up with the evolution of gaming know the remake isnt hitting the right notes. Its not a better horror game. Its just a more generic one.
I agree that the new one is better, however the new one couldn't even crawl without the old one existing as source. I also feel the same with the Re2, Re3, Re4, and REmake 2, 3, and 4. I played the OG Silent Hill 2 and RE2, 3, and 4 when I was quite young and again when the Remakes were announced. I played both the Remakes (Silent Hill 2 and REmake 4) this past month and I was really impressed. There are some things in the new ones that I'm not a fan of, Silent Hill 2 suffers from Playstation syndrome. But overall, I am more favorable to the new ones. With all that said I will still say that I personally enjoyed the old ones more, but the new ones I feel are better.
😂😌I wonder if their was anybody having these wars for re4 original vs remake but can coexist whining and btching is stupid 😂
@@ryuusaki7309 re4 was just taking a 3rd person shooter and making it another 3rd person shooter. Ogsh2 and remake are completely different games. Alot of what made sh2 what is was has been lost.
Ok. So I’m getting this game based on your review. So I’ll trade you. Go play Hollow Knight. Best Metroidvania of all time and it’s not close. I have the same resume as you with games and metroidvanias
@@ciderdonuts ive been trying to play hollow knight. For some reason.. I cant get immerssed. But ill give it another shot.
I'm still hesitating about getting SH2R I would like to know if Born from a wish is going to happen.
@@Theottselmaster I seriously doubt it. Bloober is way more concerned w things like expanding Angela's story. Its easy shock value clicks. Expanding on Maria instead would have been so much better. Remake isnt really that good. After letting it digest for a month... 6/10
The bitching from Og fans is why there is a reaction like this. Y'all mfs can't give Remake any credit, even when Team Silent members praised it.
I played the remake first and since then I’ve played 1 and 2 and the old ones in my opinion are scarier. The low fidelity graphics, Dutch camera angles, and tank controls a way more oppressive than a fresh coat of paint and you have a lot less control over Harry and James.
@@sophomorphia Its nice to see a new fan that can appreciate why the og games have been held in such high regard for so long.
2 years later still the same issues
@@ilkeryldz1912 thats amazing. Dl1 was a masterpiece. Wheres the remaster?
I love how they always claim the remake is such a superior product even though they didn't play the og and most likely didn't even play the remake and even though everyone on all social media platforms STILL uses the old sounds and scenes and songs when they talk about Silent Hill because they're just that iconic. The only thing they ever use from the remake is the gameplay because it's more in line with games nowdays. One time I saw a person on tik tok saying how good the voice acting is in the remake while using an audio from the original... If that's not telling I don't know what is 😭 Also, I just started playing the original after I got it for Christmas and I gotta say the remake never made me feel anything as strong as the first few seconds of the original and I noticed that they stretched the remake out SO HARD, probably because people nowdays want all of their games to be 50 hours long. I also love that now that I've platinumed the remake and have played a bit of the original I can argue with morons who haven't played either game who blindly hate on the original bc they just dislike older games. This reminds me a lot of the RE4 remake, which I hate, especially when compared to the original, which I adore. When people finally realise that new doesn't mean better I will finally be able to rest, especially since good, old games are usually a product of their time and modernizing them inevitably makes them worse 🙏 Edit: I forgot to mention I really like the loop theory and now that I've played some of the original I don't think this is just a thing they invented for the remake, the best example I can give right now is those notes found near that dead body when you first arrive in Silent Hill. The body looks like James and the notes were obviously written for the James you play as. I always thought the loop theory was a good one, the remake just sort of outright confirms it in a way that the original just doesn't.
Og player here, Remake is better in every way.
@reyjimenz bet'cha still think about the og scenes whenever you think about SH though. The truth is that those will never be replaced by some stupid remake because they are a product of their time and limitations and a remake will never achieve that level of craft because it is simply derivative media. If there was no og, there would be no remake so maybe you should stop dick riding so hard
I need to go replay the original with the loop theory in mind. Im sure it was in the games dna on some level.
Silent Hill 2 fans played Silent Hill 2 for the first time.
Profound statement
People actually thing the original's voice acting is bad? Hilarious. The remake's voice acting is completely awful. Just listen to Angela in the graveyard or Maria in the prison and see how utterly uninterested they are in the performance. It's unironically painful listening to them.
The only thing I did not like about the OG SH2 was the tank controls. But you get used to it the more you play. Video essay losers are making videos about every controversial topic to generate rage clicks and comments. What I loved about SH2 was how it created horror in my imagination. If you remember the sequence where you enter the lift and it says that you are too heavy to use it. I honestly thought there was some invisible entity attached to me and following me. Turns out I had to empty my inventory. Os yeah. Maybe I'm just a dum-dum, but honestly, I credit the game for invoking such feeling.
It does have that 2d control option. But it feels weird when the camera switches.
I finished playing SH 2 remake yesterday. All I can say is most of the time, I being force especially on going place to place. For example, when James Sunder going to apartment mission, the wind storm is pushing player going to apartment and after james going outside from hospital, we can't roam any place unlike SH 2 original. Am i the only one who felt that way? Anyway, I pirated game and i don't want to spend money on video games that aren't promising
Imagine being too broke to buy the game as a flex.
Good point. Game feels like its on rails.
Lot of people is kinda angry about it but yea the Remake is better just beacaue its a very different generation of graphics, bloober team was capable of doing this great game because 80% of the game was already done by Team Silent , i played SH@ when it came out i loved it , now playing the remake it feels like a very deserved upgrade
Fair enough
One thing I always see and scratch my head over are the people constantly bringing up that the fixed camera or tank controls or whatever else were all due to the tech limitations of the time. For starters, it's not like the OG was made in 1990. You'd think every game prior to RE4 was fixed camera. I guess games like Mario 64 were fixed camera tank controls and I just didn't notice. Or am I to believe that the PS2 had tech limitations that the N64 didn't? Secondly, these supposed limitations are only limitations from the perspective of hindsight. At the time, the PS2 was the most powerful and capable system on the market. I highly doubt that developers moving from the PS1 to the PS2 were going "how are we going to deal with all these horrible limitations?!?" Like 20 years from now when people are playing a SH2 Remake Remake with VR holographic diplays or something looking back on this one and saying "that awful OTS camera was just a limitation of the time." Clearly the OTS camera in the remake was a design choice, just as the fixed camera in the OG was a design choice.
When third person controls first started becoming common, I remember so many people having a hard time getting used to them. Its only a matter of getting comfortable.
I love the original and the remake. Some things the original is better for, some things the remake are better for. Neither are perfect and both can exist at the same time.
I agree that neither games are perfect. There are things I would change in the original.
Not bashing the OG. I loved it and it's the reason I wanted to play the Remake But the fixed camera and tank control are indeed limitations and the director of the original wasn't satisfied with it and actually praised the control of the remake and said it's better and it was what he wanted for the game in the first place I just wanted to point that out
He only said that in retrospect. After 3rd person shooters became common. People are taking off hand comments from single devs too seriously. Sh2 was made by an entire team. Im sure many of them are critical of their work.
Reddit is the absolute cesspool of the internet
Im neck deep in that cesspit lol
Wow guys water am i right, do you see it now? wow i am smert
Water is wet
Redditors are going to Reddit, the usual “it was bad all along”, cliché remarks midwits use to tear down the past.
Eh, i don't really care about 2. I just hope bloober won't fuck up the best part, SH4
Still need to dig into 4
Yea reddit and anyone who never played the original but say theyre a fan should never be listened to. Like ever. Both games are good, and I'm just beyond surprised they were able to replicate it. Tbh, I want to just explore more Silent Hill.
Honestly the main reason I prefer the remake is that I played the original up until the labyrinth basically and so far the game never scared me, which isn't something I'd want from an horror game
It used to scare the shit of out of me as a kid. But being scared is very subjective.
@@adamsunderland0823 fair enough, but quite confuses me since I get scared by anything
@@ItHamBoi Its psychological horror. More psychological and less horror. I personally dont judge it as a horror game. And the og sh2 isnt for everyone.
@@adamsunderland0823 I see I see
I played through the original when it came out and when my wife died I lived it, there are things in the og you can't repeat ,the remake is a game playing a game, disguised as another game and too damn long , I like the puzzles but they don't make sense sometimes and feels kinda bloated, lucky I still got my orginal disc 😅
@@elruffian163 Sorry abt your wife. SH2 hits different when you can really relate. The remakes length and pacing definitely held it back. I enjoyed the puzzles but every single one. The hangman puzzle made no sense to me at all. I still dont know how to do it.
@@adamsunderland0823 yeah the sucky part was her name was Mary too I met her four years after playing the game ,then the remake drops three days before her birthday some coincidence anyway you have to find the innocent one ,on my playthrough it's the guy who kidnapped the kid , turned out to be his daughter that on was on normal difficulty I think it's no.3
Go play spiderman 🤣
Hollow knight comparison video needed
I personally prefer the remake than the original. Something about the direction, the acting just really got to me in the remake. I didn't think and feel so deeply about SH2 in a while, and It's thanks to the remake. I did prefer some things from the og obviously. I think when James watches the tape, music is unnecessary, and there is no topping original Mary's/Maria's voice acting. Anyway I don't think much changed when it comes to how Silent Hill 2 is talked about. Unfortunately large portion of the SH2 fanbase was always toxic and unsaferable. Then we had fans who would allow no criticism of SH2 the original. Now we have fans who won't allow any criticism of the remake. Both fans then and now will also drag other things down to elevate whatever they are treating like the holy grail. Honestly I'm tired of this og vs remake war. Every time a remake comes out, people think they have to choose a side and... You don't. You can like both for what they are. I don't hate concept of remakes in general (controversial take i know). Many people think they will overshadow the original but I think they will make people talk about both remake and the original again. A lot of people from newer generations would never take a glance at an old game, but maybe thanks to a remake, they'll take an interest. Even if Just as a piece of history.
Its not that all remakes are bad. Once in a while is fine. Sh2 really wasnt the game though. Sh1 actually needs a a rework. You prefer the remake. Gave valid reasons in a chill way... not all the new fans are this relaxed abt it. For alot of people the og is simply obsolete. And that's sad. I would have rather gatekept and preserved it. Unpopular opinion.
Well that is a common problem with remakes. Companies use remakes as a big advertisement, using legacy of a game to sell it. And so games that get a remake are not the ones that need it most. (If any game even "needs" a remake that is)
I enjoyed the original and the remake
Chad
I hate zoomers.
Gen Y is the goat
I love both, I don't know why people feel the need to trash the original or the remake.
People trashing the og that never even played it. That's the worst part. Everyone played the remake. Most of the criticism is pretty valid I think.
Kinda stuns me that the removal and smoothing over of the uncanny valley of the original is seen as an improvement. That off kilter dreamlike surrealism is hard to create in any era but it's intentional and isn't just the nature of PS2 graphics. Mainstreaming it up and making it more palatable to "modern audiences" should be an immediate signpost that the artistry is watered down. I appreciate some of what the remake accomplished, hell I assumed it'd be much worse, but the combat heavy gameplay and misses in the acting just show me they copied Team Silent's homework, to a decent degree actually, but also missed the point in a lot of ways. The subleties aren't nitpicking, those fine details are the reason we're still hyperanalyzing this game because the detail lends itself to being studied over like a Kubrick film. The new version is a fun game, mostly, but it isn't an artistic masterpiece and comes across as a high budget Netflix remake of The Shining or something. Guarantee you it won't be talked about much except as a footnote to the original in 20 years.
Remake definitely wont stand the test of time. Too many games are exactly like it. There was nothing like SH2 when it released. Games didnt have that many layers and hyper sophisticated story telling. Visual and cinematic. It was very avant gard at the time.
Oh no, nobody can convince me that the OG SH 2 isn't a masterpiece. Just Mary letter in the end with Monica Taylor Horgan crying is unbetable. I knew the Remake could never reach this level of voice acting and in the end I was right. So if there's a game that can be called a masterpiece this game is Silent Hill 2.
The amount of people trashing sh2s vo is insane. Literally has some of the most beautiful and profound performances in gaming history.
@@adamsunderland0823 Now that's delusional.
@reyjimenz what is dellusional? The bodies are all james. And the loop theory has been confirmed. Its not an opinion. Its a fact.
@@adamsunderland0823 "Literally has some of the most beautiful and profound performances in gaming history." this one.
@reyjimenz oh... si... some of them are really good. Like marias final labyrinth scene. Though not all of them. I do think the remake did a really good job with james. Its almost perfect. Marias cut scenes have been pretty well regarded and very iconic for a long time.
Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks were pretty obvious influences for the OG SH2 including the acting and scene of James hiding in the closet with a gun. Just replace Pyramid Head with Dennis Hopper. Anybody saying they weren't is a normie tourist.
This is what happens when chuds get a hold of something popular.
It like remake cod world at war people will do the same as this game
The wokeification of silent hill 2 is why I voted for Trump. #project2025
What even is project 2025? And yea there is some woke elements in the remake. Subtle but its there.
Nice collection. Good memories👍
Comparing it to John Carpenter's The Thing? Not even close. Both the first adaptation and Carpenter's are great in their own way, but Silent Hill 2 remake somehow sounds and looks disinterested in itself. Silent Hill 2 had layers. This remake forgoes that and that is why it feels lacking in some areas. Adding this to help provide more perspective: I don't thing this interpretation is necessarily awful. It was a good attempt, but the visual storytelling falls short in some areas. Hopefully they continue to improve in that respect.
@@JODA93 exactly. I seen people making that argument and just rolled my eyes. Its been years since i seen the original thing. But Carpenters so influential and timeless. Sh2 remake will not have that kind of impact.
It's my understanding that Carpenter's version was not a remake, but rather another movie drawing from the same source material. Just like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings was not a remake of Ralph Bakshi's version.
oh no i think my phone quadruple my comments! oh also konami outsourced after sh4. the og sh3 wasn't supposed to be related to sh1 at all but its own story that they had said was too dark to talk about about which makes much sense when vplaying it. And the other half of team silent worked on 4 at the same time as others on 3. but 3 performed poorly bc the forced cult sh1 pressure on it. and by the time 4 dropped konami gave up on art and team silent broke up. then they just outsourced the rest as bad cash grabs hence why they were so bad
I just saw these. I didnt know that abt SH3. I wonder what the original ideas were?
