Silverblatt was a very clever and conscientious interviewer. What diminishes his achievement into something approaching insignificance is the weakness of American literature in the last 60 years. Culture is cyclical everywhere. American literature had two periods of general strength: 1830-65, 1925-65. A few greats fall mostly outside of those periods, like Henry James, Cormac McCarthy, A.R. Ammons. Not only is ours a weak period, it has grown weaker as time has passed. Ammons and McCarthy are now dead--and their best work is now a generation or more behind us.

Korea's suicide rate is on the OECD average. Excluding OECD countries, Russia's suicide rate is four times that of Korea. But why do people in all countries put such false prejudice on only Koreans? Why are they so hateful toward us? Why are they so hostile to us? I am truly curious. Why are Westerners so wicked-hearted and dehumanized?

I love seeing what Los Angeles looked like the year I was born. It still looked similar to this from my first recollections of the early seventies. Many of these cars were still on the road but would soon be replaced by the popular fuel efficient Japanese imports of the seventies.

I became the universe when I was 7. It made me think there was a god and it was me. The shocking bit was, I as an individual, was an illusion. Then much later I had an experience of seeing my soul, hidden inside my breath. A paradox perhaps.

Pretty good book about a creepy lecherous misanthrope. Tough childhood notwithstanding. Saw him once on the street buying a hotdog while talking to a couple staff women presumably. Week before he died. Didn’t look healthy, I remember thinking. Had some great programming granted.

Has the interview considered the reason a production company in the 1930's may have chosen an actor of non European decent fit the lead roll of Charlie Chan, is that the pool of actors for a lead may have had no Asian actors of that caliber, to carry a film as lead? It was likely NOT for nefarious reasons for the most obvious reasons. All other Asian characters were portrayed by Asian actors quite wonderfully. Wouldn't we expect that they also would have been of non Asian decent? Let's be a little fair gentlemen.

This is one of my favorite author interviews ever LOL it's so refreshing to hear an author so openly pissed about being ignored. I understand Laura Warholic being misunderstood and ignored but i cant believe people were trying to paint him as a racist. His first novel was entirely about racism!

As a syntopical indexer for the 1990's edition of GBWW (I indexed Democracy in America), I agree that it is a most unused book. But the research is there for anyone who wants it . The essays bring you up to speed quickly on the history of the idea and the outlines are valuable if you want to explore a topic. I just ordered the book and look forward to reading it.

Of course I do realize that standards were quite different (i.e. more primitive) back in the early seventies when it came to stage performance by rock artists. Nevertheless, hearing all these stories about Nick Drake’s failed career, due to his not-performing, I can’t help wondering why not anyone, having a right mind about Nick’s music, came up with the idea to have him performing in a suitable ambience, which could have been small theatres, where audiences can focus on the artist’s playing, rather than in some noisy alcoholic joint. Adding two or three guitars to his equipment, all set in a desired tuning so that no time needed to be wasted on retuning (meanwhile losing the audience’s attention) would have done the trick, together with a decent P.A.-system (which were already available at the time). Anyway, just a thought, a rather useless one, I admit, as it’s wining over spilt milk. Thanks for uploading this series of interviews and my compliments for the interviewing style (all good questions, which is certainly not common in interviews).

I certainly can agree that the elective system was/is a terrible concept. I was poorly served by counselors and advisors. I was not discouraged from taking electives even as a college freshman. I have used the GBWW to enhance my education ever since my university graduation.

The moment I realized that my "self" didn't end at my skin (or conversely, there never was a Self to begin with) was when I understood what Buddha/Taoists/Zen Masters understood. And I also realized that I fit the description of "atheist." There is no creator - or creator and creation is the same thing. But trying to describe "IT" is like trying to grab your own fist, bite your own teeth, or taste your own tongue. Forever Now.
