Updated Video on car (ua-cam.com/video/ko-TrlaeqGA/v-deo.html) Originally purchased the car back in 2008 with 107K and a boring 3.8L V6. Drove it for 4 years then decided to upgrade its power plant. I went to a local salvage and picked up everything I would need for the swap for $2,200 bucks. got it installed in about two days (originally came out of a 2002 Z28) so install was easy. Motor had a...
So, you usdd a "T" in the line coming to the engine to send fuel back through the Return line or ?
I would not recommend doing that way, it was incredibly stupid and would start to leak when it started to get cold. I have swapped to the correct fuel lines now
Did mine but my dash won’t light up and the car won’t crank
@jonatansanchez3279 sounds like your not getting power to the interior. Got power at the fusebox?
awesome tips i’m in the process of doing this to my firebird as well.
Very nice! What exhaust you running
@@misterglock.4282 Speed Engineering 3in true duals
How much do you have in your LS swap aside from the cost of the car?
@msh6865 that's a hard question after 12 years lol, 3k in the motor(crate motor ls1) and 1100 in everything else
Very nice. I am on the fence about doing a LS swap in a 4th Gen Firebird myself. Been looking for a affordable factory Formula or T/A but, either I'm too late and they've already sold or are junk. I can buy a very nice 2000 Firebird for around $3500 but, am not sure what the swap will cost me.
Add the cost a motor, accessories, k-member, harness, pcm, radiator. I originally built this car when the parts were a tad bit cheaper. The original cost of the car was $5,100 with 107k miles. The body has over 200,000 miles now
Formula bumper + W68 skirts and diffuser + LS1 is a pretty unique arrangement. clean build.
@lazylion420 it was a v6 originally..... only things not factory are the hood and ws6 deck lid. People give me confused looks when they see Firebird on the doors and it's got a ls1 lol
That's a very sexy firebird sick man 🤘🤘🤘
Those are some damn good tips.Appreciate it 🤘🤘🤘
Was the black/white wire just stubbed out of the connector? Im doing a swap and my black/white wire is running all the way to fuse block. Its a V6 2001 firebird.
I actually have no idea where that black white wire goes to fusebox. I just followed someone else's tortorial. It just worked lol
What a nasty cam ❤ love it! Check your Belt tensioner, may need replacement. Can cause throw the belt.
Ya I noticed that, hoping once I get it tuned properly it will run a tad smoother. It's not very old at all
Hell yeah! Sounds great!
Can't wait to hear her rumblin and choppin, dude🎉
So I have a 2000 firebird with the v6 how do you wire the L’s into that car ?
There is only one wire to add to make it run. Ls wiring harness plugs right into the v6 body harness
Were LS1 crate engines that cheap in 2012? 2-3 times that now. A decent mileage 5.3 is probably the more affordable option nowadays. Nice swap!
Looking at my receipt from 2012 (which I somehow found lol) the motor retailed for $3,554.44 and I paid $2,978.13 Can't find them that cheap anymore lol
Seriously considering doing one of these swaps myself. I've found a 2000 Firebird in very good condition that I can pickup for $3500. I would think I could buy the car and do the swap for considerably less than what I'd have in a factory V8 car.
It was cheaper to do when I did it. I was able to score a complete drop out for $2100, had to return motor due to a broken piston then bought a crate motor ls1 from GM
Seems to be a freakin awesome project to me. lookin forward to more YT content in the future ❤ regards from an another ls-swapper😊
My question is …If I put a 5.3 vortec pickup engine in my Firebird & change all the stuff that’s needed to fit f-body (like alternator, power steering ,water pump ,brackets etc.) What wire harness should I get ?
Would also need f body oil pan and balancer I believe as well. I'd go with a factory harness, custom gets pricey. I had parts from a donor when I did mine. Lots of options to wire the motor tho
@@evanhall19 yes I had to get the f body oil pan too. Thank you for taking the time to respond!
@@evanhall19I’m doing the same thing with a 5.3 in a 99 firebird .. should I get the factory Ls1 harness and also the Ecm ? Any help would be greatly appreciated sir .. thank you 🙏🏼
@EricAtkinsonMusic after a quick search most people had a ton of issues trying to use anything other than a factory harness, as a truck harness has the PCM on the other side of engine bay. I would also find the correct pcm for the car as well. Less hassle, unless you have HP tuners to adjust a truck pcm to work in the firebird
@@evanhall19 so I’ll just get me an ls1 99 trans am harness and pcm and go that route..I have all the fbody parts adapters brackets and stuff and I’m not sure what size transmission is in mine ..it’s got a super big pan but will I have to change the transmission as well .. also that injection 2 wire is already hooked up on mine for some reason
im doing a 6.0 swap on my v6 any tips and parts i will need to get it done
I have a newer video going over roughly what I did, a donor car would make it way easier. Need the v8 K-member, accessories, harness, ECU, Radiator, transmission lines (if auto) gotta add a wire to the fuse box so all the injectors will work. The v8 harness plugs rights into the v6 body harness. The v6 cluster will work with the swap, ran mine for about a year before swapping.
Ok so I’m trying to hook up the inj-2 fuse where did u draw power from? My fuse block is empty on both sides
Well about that lol, your gonna have to add a pin. I went the lazy way and just jammed the fuse down over the wire. One side of the injector 2 fuse location is hot (mine was)
@XenoSeven86 now that you've asked me this question, my install is now bothering me..... guess I'll order a pin to install into the fuse block lol
@@evanhall19 I just went to a pick n pull and grabbed one off a Tahoe. But yeah think it’s called Multi-Pak idk the number 150/250?
Hay man clean car! Do you remember if you had to do anything for the VATS?
Just plugged in the V8 ECM into harness and it worked
@@evanhall19 Great I have a stock PCM and was about to order one with VATS delete. U just saved me some money
As long as it's a 99-02 F-body should be simple ecm swap, with the added wire for the added injectors
@@evanhall19 ‘01 V6 A4 swapped to ‘01 LS1 M6 can’t wait to fire it
two questions. 1) did you upgrade the fuel pump? 2) where does the fuel line with the green cap go?
I did upgrade the fuel pump and the line with the green cap is a EVAP line. Also within the last 2 weeks got around to replacing the v6 fuel lines with v8 lines. So everything is now correct
@@evanhall19 thank you for the reply.
How did you get the cruise control module to wire up?
Never hooked it back up..... I do miss it!
@evanhall17 ahh that's about where I'm at
@@williamkosarek780 I still got the wiring tied up in front of the fans for the electric throttle body.
What wiring harness did you use?
It's just a stock 99-02 camaro/Trans Am engine/transmission harness, they plug right into the v6 body harness
Wish I found your channel earlier! Watch my latest vid, my shop ran a different fuel feedline setup. I think your system works better than mine cause I have warmstart issues caused by steambubble build up, I think.
I have not had any start up issues with my fuel system set up. only need to change mine to AN fittings to be safer Yours is clean BTW.
How difficult was the swap as far as like making sure everything matched up and if there’s any conversions needed? I have a 2001 Firebird I was thinking about LS1 swapping someday and was just curious what all I’d be getting myself into lol
I made a new video, hopefully it helps answer some of your questions
@@evanhall19 Oh bet dude, thank you!
How much would you think you spend for having it like the way you have it right now I have my 01 firebird and trying to do the same as yours just curious about how much $ would I need ?
Did the ls compressor fit in the factory mounting location?
With motor slid into factory location it did not. We will eventually get a top mount style. The motor mount adapters we used did not allow enough space. I think if u make your own it will fit, but frame normally needs notched
Hey buddy swap looks amazing I’m going to be ls swapping my 1969 c10 this summer and was wondering what motor mounts and header you ran thanks
Speed engineering C10 ls swap shorties, and ICT brand ls c10 swap engine mounts. Could not run low hang AC compressor with the engine mounts
Hey buddy, Who did the install for you? Looks very nice..how much did it cost ?
My dad and I swapped it ourselves. I can't remember the cost. We ended up having to have the engine fully rebuilt after the seller lied to us.
@@evanhall19 oh man that sucks...but it came out real good, truck looks and sounds 👌 👏 👍
@@ricardoeaglertowing570 thanks man. Been a good truck! Been in the family since 1986
What all did you have to change in order to do the swap ?
How much did it cost to swap
Its hard to say now... i did it back in 2012. I went the expensive route and picked up a ls1 crate motor from GM Performance for a little over 3k. Got the transmission, k-member(with suspension), accessories, wiring harness, and a radiator for around $1,100 from a local salvage, spend 500 to have 4l60e rebuilt by a friend i worked with at the time. Im still driving the car, body has over 200,000 on it now, motor i lost track of.
What stereo console is that? I think I want one.
jensen vx7020, its pretty old. Works good though
nice build. I have a 2000 Pontiac firebird v6. just wondering did you use the same v6 rear end. if not then which rear end did you end up using for the v8 swap. thanks!
Original 3.08 open diff that came with the car. Has survived my lead foot for the last 8 years lol
I think cleet would have beat him despite blowing the motor!
the name is now hemiroid!
Thats good. Poor Finnegan lol
Can you give me info on what all you did cuz I’m trying to figure out how to do Ls1 swap in my 02 v6 firebird and everything and everyone says it’s hard to
I used this guys methods. I think pictures are broken now. Took me two days to swap from a running v6 car to a running v8 car... whoever says its hard is not intelligent ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1165822-99-l36-v6-01-ls1-v8-swap-w-pics.html
Sounds killer, What exhaust is that?
I think i had had a magnaflow muffler welded to the original piping... now i got full exhaust. 1in7/8 speed engineering headers and their 3in true dual stainless exhaust with bullet mufflers. I have a newer video of the car
Evan Hall Awesome Thank you so much
So the dash gauges and that worked with just the engine harness?
Yup. I ran the v6 cluster about a year before finding a low mileage v8 cluster (which shows 160mph)
What wiring harness did you need for the swap? I bought a cheap v6 Firebird for $250 and I was told today that it’s going to be a pain in the butt to swap an LS motor in it. They also told me that I’m going to need a K member from a Trans Am. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated!! Beautiful TA by the way!!!
As long as its a 99+ its super easy. 98 might be the same. Just use the engine harness from a camaro or trans am. Yes you will need the v8 k member as well. This swap took me two days to do in my dads garage without a lift. The harness plugs right into the body harness as well.
Evan Hall thanks! The Firebird I bought is a 2000. I talked to a performance shop today and he made it sound like it’s a huge headache to swap over but from what I’ve been reading by a lot of guys who have done the swap, it doesn’t sound that bad of a job. Thanks again!
Nice, anymore vids?
Not any current ones. This motor blew up and he is now rocking a LSx 427 thats pushing a little over 600hp to the wheels. Built 9in rated at 1500hp. Equally upgraded clutch and t56 as well
How much that cost
Originally was gonna cost $2100. Got a deal at a salvage for a Engine, transmission, subframe, ecm, wiring, and accessories. Motor ended up knocking and gave it back, got $1000 back then spent $3000 for a GM performance LS1 long block (which you cant buy any more). So id say a little around $4500. Getting a brand new engine hurt the wallet the most lol
You wouldn't happen to know if this could be done the same way in a 96? I'm not sure if GM made any changes to the wire harness between 96 and 99?
I believe 99-02 is all the same. And maybe 98. 97 and below you have to change quite a bit of wiring to make a ls work. Havent looked to much into it
I've been thinking about getting a firebird and putting an LS1 in it. How does it hold up at high speeds if you run it fast?
I've had it up to 130 pretty easily. I don't have Z rated tires so i don't do it very often. Its a runner though! Itll handle the speeds just as good as the Trans Am/Z-28 counterpart. Its my daily so i try not to abuse it to much.....
Evan Hall Yeah I hear ya. When I finally get mine, I plan on putting some new cams and headers in the ls1
What did you do for the front cradle? Use the V6 or did you get the LS cradle? How much of the wiring harness did you use from the V6 or did you find a complete LS harness? I have done tons of engine swaps but looking forward to my first LS swap. I to have a 99 Firebird currently with a blown up 3.8. were you able to just change the bell housing on the 4L60 from the 3.8 bolt pattern to the LS pattern? Any insight you can give would be great.
i got a complete lift out from a 02 Z28. came with craddle, engine, transmission, accessories and harness. as long as you get the F-body LS1 harness it plugs directly into the body harness of the v6 car body. only got to add one wire to make it run. had it running in two days on a weekend
Evan Hall you didn’t have to switch out the radiator or fans?
Evan Hall what wire did you have to add to make it run? Was it the wire splice on the passenger shock tower to get power to bank 2 injectors and coils?
Angelo Edwards I need the answer to this as well what wire is it mine is only firing on bank1
Christian Del Bosque you’ll have to look at the wire schematic. Basically all your doing is splicing into power that feeds bank 1 with bank 2. The main issue is the bcm (chassis harness) is still V6 and the 6 cylinder cars only has 1 fuse that powers all 6 coils and injectors. Well with the LS that side fuse on the body harness will work but it only sends power to bank 1. AL you have to do is get power to bank 2 and that should be all the wire management don’t take my word on that tho
No way I also live in oklahoma I have so many questions for you on how to do this
I have a 1999 V6 firebird and I'm in the process of swapping the Ls1 in. I have a donor car... What are all the things that I need to be looking at? Please hit me back ASAP. Personally email ariesnation1990@gmail.com...
Devon Lewis use this guys build. he did an excellent write up. its what i used. ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1165822-99-l36-v6-01-ls1-v8-swap-w-pics.html
Evan Hall Hell yeah you the man bro. The donor car is in fact a WS6 2000. I'll post video and pictures soon bro. Again thanks man
Devon Lewis i didnt have a donor lol. so i skipped changing the fuel lines. figured out a way to return fuel to tank another way.
Evan Hall cool bro... so you kept your original electrical harness?
Devon Lewis the body harness yes. engine harness came with the motor. all u gotta do is add one little wire from engine harness to a live fuse location and itll start right up. took me two days to finish the swap. easiest swap ever
Nice work. We're doing a v6 to lt1 because there's a couple a those available to us. Like to do an ls though.
