    That is one of a kind. If you ever get the chance, try catfish skin as well. Various snakes are fun too. I used to like collecting a few pine snakes native here in Michigan, they have a beautiful black and white checkerboard pattern on their bellies. Really eye popping when you spray the clear lacquer on after they are tanned, oiled, and dried.

    These turned out wonderful. Nothing beats the real thing. You have an interesting fur machine. What is the brand? Most of mine are Bonis. The needle bar on yours appears to have some spring action. I know part of your hesitation to manufacture coats is logistics, but you're repressing your talents that are pounding at the door. Take your gift and run with it!! You have the spark, turn it into a wildfire. Customers will pay the shipping for the ruff fitting, then travel to your location for the final. The travel to your location is part of their experience in the process of that custom-made coat. I promise. Sleep on it. Then do it. 💪

    • @darlingleatherandfur
      @darlingleatherandfur 8 місяців тому

      It’s a Techsew 202, I don’t have any mechanical skill, so when I was looking I was nervous to buy a bonis in case it didn’t work, so I went with the new option. I do have vests on my docket this year! I appreciate your faith in me for coats! We’ll see when I work up the courage to tackle them.

    • @briarpalek9254
      @briarpalek9254 8 місяців тому

      @darlingleatherandfur Either you are insane or I am. I can see no barriers standing in your way for coats. A coat is simply a vest with sleeves. Your skill level is obviously past the "beginner" level of manufacturing coats. I know there are a few reasons that create hesitation. 1st and foremost is having enough of your own fur to play with. Buying a couple of bolts of sail cloth will work for replacing the fur and still create the same result until you build your confidence. In my case, I owned a fur dressing business. There was very little tanning expense, plus running our trapline supplied all the fur. But that was an uncommon luxury. In most scenarios, a person doesn't have that advantage. But at least you have a husband that traps, and I have a hunch he would like nothing more than a reason to triple down on his efforts if he enjoys as much as I have over the decades. As a fellow that's likely old enough to possibly be your grandfather, I know skill when I see it. I compliment your work because I can appreciate your results. I hope you haven't feared that I could be one of those creeps that appear from time to time (and I certainly wouldn't blame you) on this platform. But I wouldn't feel any different about your efforts if you happened to be a man. Actually, it would be easier to comment if you were since it would lesson the possible creep factor for you. I guess that's the risk I take... Anyways, I know of a book that will be of great help if you are interested. My ex-wife of many years ago learned 98% of coat manufacturing from this book. It is that complete. It will show you how to do fully let-out furs and other various furrier skills. Keep in mind that she had zero experience with coats beforehand. In just a few months, she was off to the races and making from 75 to 125 coats a year consistently besides all the small items with very little marketing. There was no internet as we know it today. Perhaps you already know of this book, but if not, here it is. Advanced FUR CRAFTSMANSHIP * IMPROVED FUR TECHNIQUES In All Peltries Commonly Used BY THE PRACTICAL FURRIER by SAMUEL RAPHAEL It is an old hard cover publication out of print, but you can still find it online. Look around, I have seen it priced anywhere from $30 to $300 and worth every penny. Be sure to get this specific copy. There is another that looks similar from the same author, but this has the updates of the time. It takes you from A to Z at your pace. So what's in it for me? Nothing. Then why do I bother ? Because I can, and why not pay it forward when given the unexpected opportunity. Speaking of books, I think I just wrote one. 🤔

    The wallet featuring the round end of the tail is really sharp. It pops and my hunch is you will take many orders for those. They are all skillfully made, but that one is the cherry!

    • @darlingleatherandfur
      @darlingleatherandfur 8 місяців тому

      Thank you! That one is my favorite also. The tail was a smidge too short to have a complete panel, and I didn’t have any extra to splice together, so I slept on it and had this idea the next day!

    • @briarpalek9254
      @briarpalek9254 8 місяців тому

      @darlingleatherandfur That is really interesting. Our dreams can be powerful solutions to problems we face at times. I have had several of those experiences in my past when fabricating machinery for the tannery. Whenever I ran into a real mechanical road block, I would try to clear my mind and think only about the problem as I drifted off to sleep. It is not easy to do, but when you can, it has worked for me, and the same has been true for my wife when she was having trouble solving a problem. And now for you as well. A large part of what makes working with fur&leather is that your imagination is the only limit. Although having the material to experiment with is sometimes a preventative to playing with ideas. I can also appreciate your taste for color contrasting both fur and leather, I have been bitten by the same bug. 😃

    These turned out really nice, and the credit card holder is a great way to use the smaller tail sections. I have no idea if you already make pocket purses. If not, that is another way to use the smaller tail sections. For the guys who no longer use the standard wallets because of the bulk when loaded with plastic and cash. Sitting on a full wallet in the hip pocket gets to be uncomfortable. Cargo pants' pockets solve that or use shirt pockets that are large enough to fit the wallet. I carried a standard bi-fold beaver tail wallet for over 20 years. They last far longer than most typical cow leather wallets. I know of many others who have had the same long-term use from their beaver wallets. Checkbook covers may be another consideration if you are not already doing those. The edges of your wallets turned out awesome. These are all top-shelf quality. If you have trouble keeping enough tails on hand, I know they are super easy to obtain through other trappers if your husband has trouble keeping up with your demands. Plenty here in Michigan, but I know Louisiana has some giant tails if you connect with some beaver trappers in that state as well, if you ever have the need.
