Omnipod 5 Box Opening - First Tubeless Automated Insulin Delivery System

Leighton got the new Omnipod 5 system last week so we wanted to make a video of opening it up and getting started on the new system. The really cool thing about this new system is that it will automatically give insulin when her blood sugar is high and she does not already have enough insulin to cover that high. It will also slow down basal delivery if her BG is trending down to help prevent lo...

Dance Competition Weekend w/ 8 year old T1D Leighton

We traveled to Louisville Kentucky last weekend for Leighton’s team’s dance competition, Jamfest. Thought we would share some photos of the dances and some videos of our issue trying to keep her blood sugar up in the pool at the hotel. Her blood sugar ran great for dance. She ate low carb breakfast in the mornings which made it a lot easier, plus all three dances were within a two hour period e...

Leighton was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May of 2021. She is 7 years old, soon to be 8. I thought it would be fun to let her do some videos of her diabetes management to share with others. This video is just a pump change of her tubeless Omnipod insulin pump. This has to be changed every three days. If people find it useful, I may do more videos and explain in more depth. I know when Leig...

    The OmniPod can’t be used long-term because of the scar tissue problems that causes I was suffered with it for three years and it wrecked my legs to the point where I will never be able to absorb insulin again there. Tubing pumps are so much better especially if she becomes a young lady it’ll be much nicer to be able to store the pump in multiple different locations and protect her young body from so much scar tissue by offering different types of insertions that can really fit into your life. Type 1 Is not a one size fits all disease by any means. But Tandem is the only way to have long-term success and be able to live completely freely without having to always fear of an over insulin delivery from a pod, a leaking pod inducing DKA landing in ICU on a vent and all the problems with Omni pods. Check out Tandem go ahead and order that it’s so much better and as a parent you can’t trust an Omni pod they overdeliver when they are pressed on they leak they have really awful scar tissue damage and are not worth it go with suing save her body for money money years of scars to come from this disease this can be minimized by using a medically correct pump called Tandem. Tandem not only adjust her basil but it will also administer boluses as well and does 95% of the work for you and effortless 5-6 a1c range start your correction journey at tandemdiabetes.com

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      When you have diabetes, you need insulin for the carbs/sugars you eat to keep your blood sugar from going high. You also need a little bit of insulin all day to cover the glucose your body produces. When we have to determine how much insulin she needs, there are many factors that can cause us to give more than she needs. When this happens, her blood sugar can drop into a dangerously low level. That’s when these snacks come into play. They are used to bring her blood sugar back up and keep her out of those dangerous low levels. This is also why the dexcom device she wears is very important. It helps us determine when she needs candy or some other snack with carbs, without it, she would have to prick her finger many times a day and there would be a much higher chance of missing a low.

      @@ItsyourgirlDJ regardless of whether they’re in america or not. (i’m not american) a drop in blood sugar can be fatal, and packing high sugar and glucose content food can fix a low blood sugar for long enough to either let the blood-Glucose level go back to normal or hold off fatalities until they’re able to get insulin or medical help. diabetes type 2 might be more sensitive to sugar because it’s based off an unhealthy diet but the young girl has type 1 which is something a person is born with and has nothing to do with healthy foods.

    Thanks for sharing the Vedic. It is really useful. My 5 years old son was diagnosed has Type 1 about 3 months and using only Dexcom.I wish to learn more how the ominipod work. My questions are(1) does it hurt when it is injected ? Does it looks like the sensor is Dexcom? Does the automated function mean it injects itself without our program every time when eating ? Do we need to calculate the card he eating for insulin’s douses? Thanks in advance for your sharing . Sam

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      When putting on a new pump, it does poke you for a quick second just like the dexcom but it is less intensive than the dexcom. Leighton uses numbing cream for the dexcom but not for the Omnipod. The pod is a little bigger than the dexcom but same concept with the sticker to hold it on and it is waterproof. The automated feature does not automatically dose for meals so you still have to calculate carbs but you just enter the carbs on the PDM device to dose the insulin. It also gives small doses of insulin throughout the day for basal insulin in place of the long acting insulin that would be given as a shot if not on a pump. The automated feature is there to give extra insulin when running high, basically checks to see if a correction calculation calls for more insulin every 5 minutes or slowing down the basal insulin when running/trending low. Good luck to you!

    They're running on pure sugar at this point XD. It's adorable but obviously very worrying as a parent. I've learned the hard way that preparation goes a long way. Let them get to 200+ before these shenanigans if you can with no large bolus running through them.

  • @jasonnov118
    @jasonnov118 2 роки тому

    Looking forward to the 5 but insurance won't cover it yet :/ Not only at night this is going to help, but when the kid is in school I'd imagine it'd be a lot of help. I can't do temp basals or small boluses from home but with the 5 it could do small corrections to keep them in range if breakfast or lunch doesn't go perfect with bolus alone.

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      Dang, hopefully your insurance kicks in soon, we have been pretty lucky with our insurance. You are totally right that at school it will be great for small corrections. We have had a lot of times already during the day even at home when she runs a little high and we know it is starting to correct so we don’t have to keep checking to see if a correction can be given.

      @@Dailey004 Thanks for the info! Can't wait to get my hands on it. Like, how well does activity mode work? How can it handle the inevitable high with pizza 4 hours later? As a side note, I've been searching youtube for an in depth breakdown of the 5 and you're the only one to show these kinds of details in the software. So, thanks! One question I had, is it true that the dexcom and 5 needs to be on the same side of the body? My son wears his dexcom on the back of his arm, so not sure how well that would work with the pod on the belly or leg. Thank you again and keep on fighting the good fight!

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      @@jasonnov118 hey no problem, glad to help! So we have used activity mode quite a bit already. When she goes on the trampoline, plays in our water slide, stuff like that. From my understanding it basically changes the target BG to 150. It definitely helps but it can only slow down so much. I’m sure for someone who has a higher basal it could help even more. Leighton’s basal ranges from .15-.25. If Leighton eats a decent amount of carbs and gets insulin and then goes on the trampoline right after, activity mode will not slow her down enough, she would need something to eat. I will say it definitely does a great job with some highs 3+ hours after eating. If she starts running high and the insulin is wearing off, it just starts kicking in extra insulin and can bring her back down pretty quickly. It really is a game changer from constantly checking and doing calculations to see if we should give more insulin. We feel much more comfortable letting it runs it’s course and not constantly checking.

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      @@jasonnov118 forgot to mention, we have used opposite sides for dexcom and pump and had no problems with communication yet. Another thing… the PDM seems to communicate further away than the Dash PDM. One last thing that we have seen which is nice: the PDM shows the dexcom reading so sometimes when she leaves her phone somewhere and we have no data on follow, the PDM might show her BG.

      @@Dailey004 Interesting. Sounds like an upgrade in bluetooth for the 5, which dexcom 7 should hopefully follow soon. The range on Dash and G6 is pretty bad. Good to hear both devices don't need to adhere to a certain side so far. The training material never mentioned it?

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      No, we still have to dose for carbs. It really just helps regulates automatically. So if we didn’t give enough insulin for her carbs, it will end up giving more later when she starts running high or will slow down her basal if she starts going slow. It works the best at night to adjust for highs and lows that sometimes happen randomly. If we did forget to give insulin for food though, it would start kicking in and giving insulin as she started to go high. It just would not be fast enough to let it do everything on its own.

    • @robertjones8598
      @robertjones8598 2 роки тому

      I just got my omnipod 5 yesterday. From what I understand, unlike t-slim and Medtronic pumps the 5 does not have an auto-bolus correction feature so it isn’t going to knock down a higher BG level on its own. It is only adjusting and delivering basal and assumes that you’ve accounted for and performed a meal bolus. I wish it would do a correction bolus at some defined point in the algorithm like the others do but it doesn’t. It will protect well against lows, so for a parent of a T1 that has to be a big relief. Provided mealtime boluses are done with reasonable accuracy i can already see that I am going to maintain more consistent levels with fewer lows or having to carb up to stave off a low. For me tubes are unacceptable so I can live with this one drawback I see with Omnipod 5 vs Medtronic and t-slim.

    • @Dailey004
      @Dailey004 2 роки тому

      @@robertjones8598 Awesome that you got yours! Omnipod 5 does do correction bolus, it has been great so far. We still bolus for meals but yes after a couple hours as IOB goes down if BG is high, it will start giving correction blouses based on your target and correction factor (BG - Target) / Correction factor - IOB. This works great at night as well when you have spikes in BG.

    • @robertjones8598
      @robertjones8598 2 роки тому

      @@Dailey004Day 2.5 for me and I’m very happy with it so far. However, unless I’m wrong or this endo T1 is wrong, the omnipod 5 just won’t auto-bolus. However, and particularly with a child, I could see where adjustments made within the basal window could get her back into range. I tested it myself the first night and ate way too many brownies just to see what it would do. It couldn’t get me close to the 110 target because I didn’t put in a manual correction and it won’t auto-bolus as Medtronic and t-slim do. Perhaps going in at 180-200 without a backlog of brownie carbs to deal with it could have come closer. Not a huge deal for me since I can put in even an imprecise correction and then let the pod take it from there. If you haven’t seen it here’s a link to an excellent comparison of the three pumps. Toward the end auto-bolus is addressed. Medtronic and t-slim have different variants of auto-bolus where Pod doesn’t. Last night I was at 190, did a correction and let the system go. With the aid of thee bolus it brought me to 110 and from there maintained an incredibly consistent level. It’s a great thing and I already love it. Best wishes. ua-cam.com/video/QC0-3w1lL88/v-deo.html
