The GBS-Control - The Best Budget Friendly 1080p Upscaler for Retro Consoles!
To this day, I love my GBS-Control upscaler. I originally started this journey with a RetroTINK Scart2X, before moving onto an OSSC. When I started the Retro 500 series, the OSSC wasn't the most compatible and the bob deinterlacing wasn't great for UA-cam content. After gaining some soldering confidence, I decided to build a GBS-Control!
This video is intended for potential users who want to both play, stream and/or record their retro games; this is why I've added a little post-processing such as cropping and zooming. You can crop and resize with the GBS, however, if you want perfect integer scaling without the line filter, then resizing won't look great.

The OSSC's Line2x mode has aged pretty well tbh (plz read description)
Переглядів 11712 годин тому
The beginning of this clip is exactly what you'd get from just plugging an OSSC straight into your TV with something like the Megadrive connected. I've then corrected the aspect ratio, cropped the borders and zoomed in during post. I loved my OSSC back in the day and, even then, Line5x was available so I never got to experience the bare-bones Line2x mode as 3x and 4x were my go tos. I just want...
GOD OF WAR in the DEEP SOUTH! It's DANTE'S INFERNO on the PS3!

The Crusades meets Divine Comedy! Dante's Inferno is a bit of a forgotten title these days but, personally, I think it's aged pretty well and is cheap enough to justify its shortcomings.

6:31 - what game is this?
That one is Valis III on the Mega Drive 🙂
That clear acrylic enclosure looks very posh! Did you cut it yourself or was it bought from a hobbyist site?
It was an eBay seller, I just messaged them the dimensions and they made a private listing for me. I think it was less than £10 for the two pieces including shipping so not bad!
I have been using the GBS-C for few years now, hooked up to a Fujitsu CRT Monitor, oh boy it is really something else. Specially devices that output Component video, such as PS2, GameCube, Xbox, Wii, I swear it is insanely crisp compared to anything that I have ever seen, I highly recommend it to anyone! Plus building a Gbs-c is a blast!
I love building these things! There's something special about plugging it in and seeing that it actually works!
Love my GBS control upscaler, brought a pre built one tho. The best upscaler for the money, it is brilliant.
Humpy dump ftfw!
i really hate this, when that triggered, i always wait until the timer runs out.
I used to love this game! Slight cock up saying all the characters are original as I believe Olaf from Lost Vikings is in it as a secret character. Also, there's an MSU-1 version with the actual songs included which is cool! Great work as always Tunners!
Thank you! The "original" characters line was just a dig at the fact the characters are completely uninspired lol. There's the random punk fella, the wolverine ripoff and the western catgirl too. If anything, Olaf has the most original design out of them all! I didn't realise there's an MSU version!
Honestly a huge fan of this game on the Megadrive but I recently played this snes version and I hate to say, it's slightly better.
The Megadrive at least has a better resolution as you can see more of the track and it also has Radar Love... I just wish the Follins had arranged the Megadrive music too!
This is my favourite game in the series, and it even helped me through tough times a few years ago. It’s almost like an acid trip on a cd. And as someone with ADHD… that statement’s actually kinda true, and it’s probably why this series appeals to me so much lol You REALLY started the video with that cutscene too? Insane lol
Haha I never even realised the connotations of that scene when I was a kid! The series, and this game in particular, has a certain, timeless magic to it! Unfortunately I'm too old and it's to expensive to get an ADHD diagnosis but I'm all but sure I have it!
One of my absolute favourite games!
0:56 my favorite carachter❤❤❤
I beat this game like six years ago and to this day I still have literally no idea why Good video!
You're way more hardcore than I am! I swear I was developing RSI recording the footage for this!
Was a great video they made!
tunnotron3000, This video is fantastic! I liked it a lot!
I've been thinking about getting it but guess I'm gonna spend my money on the original
I've played both games and love them both as my favorite Fatal Frame game in the series. But for the remaster, I will say that they could have done better with the motion controls, especially if they added the Wii Motion Plus feature in the game. There are other Wii games that did a much better job at using motion controls like Metroid Prime Trilogy for example. I didn't mind the 3rd person camera perspective too much. Even though I preferred the fixed camera angles from the original game, at least they redid Mio and Mayu's outfits and they look more detailed imo, so I didn't mind it too much. And the ghost hands, compared to Fatal Frame 4 and 5 they were really easy to avoid in this game if you just spam the A button as you're grabbing the item as Mio would automatically pull back if a hand tries to grab her. As someone who grew up on the Wii and PS2, I had very little issues with motion controls in the games I played, at least for me. I understand that most people are not a fan of motion controls, even though this remake had poor motion controls compared to other Wii games, I had to adapt to it and get use to combatting ghosts with it despite the game running at 30fps. Between the original and the remake I prefer the original game because of it's better controls compared to motion, the fixed camera angles, the ending theme song "Chou", and the nostalgia of it being an early 2000's PS2 game. Compared to the original, I do find this game to be more visually stunning, especially what they did with Mio and Mayu.
Thanks for the comment, glad to see someone else who's a big fan of the second game! I stuck with this remake as much as I could but it was physically painful due to the way you had to move and balance the Wii remote. The lighting system has definitely improved but I think I prefer the Xbox Directors Cut instead for this.
@@tunnotron3000 I did notice that for some reason you can't hold the cursor still in camera view no matter how flat I held my controller when it came to precise aiming. Something that should have been improved in the game as well. I've never played the Xbox version, but I heard that the game does have a fourth ending and a new difficulty.
Yeah it's always difficult to convey controls in these videos but I've also noticed that. I also noticed that, when Mio spins to take a photo of a vanishing ghost above or below her, the camera quickly moves back down to the horizon. I can't imagine that makes completing the ghost list any easier!
@@tunnotron3000 Yeah, that part was more challenging to catch ghosts. Because I played the original game a lot, I had to memorize where and when the ghosts would appear and orientate my controller in the right angle before it triggers. But you had to have a quick reaction.
Literally on 12 views as I type this comment, well predicted!
No one else is allowed to watch this video or I'll be exposed as a fraud!
This video is proof that standard VHS isn't really as bad as people make it out to be, especially with a four head deck + HiFi capability (tape speed won't mess with your sound in a HiFi capable unit). Quick tip: If you're feeling lucky, you can really get some major "VHS effect" artifacts and glitching by playing around with the tracking. You'd have to be careful when doing it cause you might completely throw the tape out of alignment if you do. It will only work during playback, but it's a thing you can do when capturing the tape to digital for some added messiness. If you're feeling extra lucky, gently crinkle various points of the tape a bit, or scrape a small magnet against certain points of the tape (not the entire tape though; you don't want to completely erase everything now). You'll get some truly gnarly results if pulled off correctly.
"A little known band" hahahaha Good video!
CVG's Complete Guide to Consoles had screenshots and a preview of a Mega Drive version of Dynamite Dux, But I bought it as a kid and rememver being disapointed that I finished it on my first go. They also removed the bonus levels from the SMS version.
It's such an oddity! The arcade version was pretty brutal, I'm surprised they made it so easy.
@@tunnotron3000Either they were going for a Kids game, or it really needed some rebalancing before release!
Judging by the fact they only released it in Europe and Brazil, they probably couldn't be arsed to do much more with the game once it became functional!
Not terrible for 2mb, but the arcade game is heaps better. This is one of Happy Console Gamer’s most despised titles. Great video, we’d like to get to the arcade version!
Yeah I didn't think it was horrible, is just so stripped back compared to the arcade it's a bit disappointing! Thanks for your kind comment!
Staaaaaaaaaars
He was very helpful on a retrotink discord as well.
One idea I’ve had would be to have a First Person no damage run of Hunk’s mode in this style, similar to the VHSes found throughout both campaigns.
In my opinion tekken 4 takes the crown the beautiful honmaru stage and music with the cool jin white and black pants it's too much for a 2001 game
I remember playing Tekken 4 for the first time, thinking to myself "How could graphics actually get better than this?!"
@@tunnotron3000 yeah very impressive plus all characters had good story too
We need a Code Veronica Remake next, however I feel like if Capcom is chasing the money they will put their focus more towards a RE5 remake. Rumor has it they are working on a remake of both games though??
I love Steve at 3:32 looking like a bad@ss like Leon. I love how Steve and Leon look alike but they couldn't be much more different as characters. Steve Burnside is the man!
It is funny seeing you describe Code Veronica as B-Team: The story goes that it was originally going to be the true successor to Resident Evil 2, and was intended as such, up until it became apparent that Capcom were obligated to release the mainline series on PlayStation first and foremost. The Resident Evil 3 we know today, the one featuring Jill and Nemesis, actually was intended as a Gaiden spin-off but got promoted through circumstance. In anycase, you're not alone in wanting a remake. I feel Code Veronica takes the design philosophies of RE2 and goes mental with it, for better or for worse. Someday I should play the PlayStation 3 version of Code Veronica since it apparently has an overhauled realtime lighting and shadow system, besides the obvious niceties that come pre-requisite with a seventh generation HD remaster and all that.
See that's what I always thought but if you check out around 12:46ish in this video with Shinji Mikami and pals, they mention that they created CV as something for Sega fans after they couldn't port RE2 to the Saturn: ua-cam.com/video/ID3tBEDfeeo/v-deo.html I've been playing the HD version and the lighting system is definitely good though it can get a little too dark in some areas. Then again, the PS2 game is like one of the greyest games I've ever played lol.
Happy Big 3-0, Tekken! :)
I'm pretty bad at fighting games but I own over 80 of them and that's only my physical fighting games. Overall I probably own over 100.
its not that bad... at least compared to SF1/SF2 Vanilla and Virtua Fighter 1. I agree about the difficult, but the PS1 Tekkens are plagued with that (looking at you Jun). My fav game for the PS1 trilogy still is TK2 (story, music, stages) and TK3 for the gameplay.
Oh it's definitely not a bad game! You can still feel the Tekken essence in there and, once you work out which combos actually exist at this point, you can still have some fun with it. Tekken 2 definitely has a special place in my heart, I was so happy when I was finally able to get the full game!
As someone who was fortunate enough to have skipped Tekken 1 almost entirely at a younger age, I don't feel quite as strongly about it as maybe Tekken 2 or 3. Unfortunately the AI quirks make playing Tekken 2 (and arguably Tekken 3) more difficult than they should be as well, although I am not exactly the best player of fighting games either tbh.
I'm glad we have stuff like the ghost AI in newer Tekken games as they don't seem to rely on cheating and breaking the rules. At least Tekken 1 is nowhere near as bad as SSF2 Turbo!
This game isn’t bad but a down grade
Agreed, it's not awful but it's just such a let down compared to previous titles. I was about 7 years old when this game released on the Mega Drive and I was sooooo hyped for it!
This should be retconned as the very 1st(canonically) sonic game
you should know better than to make a thumbnail like that in the year of our lord. personally i think you should be put into the void never to be returned
2:51 - Well, that's an awkward-looking animation.
But isn't SLP or EP mode more common than LP mode?
Not sure about elsewhere but in the UK most common VCRs had either SP or LP. I wouldn't be surprised if they were "simpler" names for the SLP or EP etc.
What camera do you use? what model? is it really VHS, or is it "VHS"?(like MiniDV, VHS-C or some)
This was just filmed on a phone, a Moto G8 Power, I think. It really was VHS, a cheap Akai PAL VCR and a very well used cassette.
Lee really got the balls too sweaty 💀
His infinite kicks have always been peak for Tekken. The game encourages cheesy strats like it, but I maintain the first two games aren't actually that fun to play anymore. Tekken 3 still holds up amazingly well however.
Yeah the jump from Tekken 2 to Tekken 3 was phenomenal, it really became its own thing in both a gameplay and style sense.
lol
Wow. An £8 capture card with the MS2130 chip that captures a clean 1080p60 picture in proper stereo sound? That's quite impressive. I've had this little device for 5 months and hoo boy, it delivers. By the time I'm writing this comment, I bet that more UA-camrs, big or small, will look into this capture card (the one with the MS2130 chip, not the old MS2109 chip that's already been talked about numerous times) and make a video of it for everyone to see. Overall, you did a fine job with this video. You deserve more subscribers. 👍
Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying it. It's crazy how much more affordable capture cards are these days.
Did you notice picture too dark using GBS Control or Washed out? What Black color space are you using in this video, RGB Limited or Full? What model of GBS control?
For this video I was using the GBS 8200 (black buttons). The VGA to HDMI converters never seem to be exactly full or limited. In this case, I just set it to whichever looked most representative of what I was seeing on the monitor. If Limited seems to crush the blacks, try Full.
They also had animated shorts. Most of them are up in UA-cam
What resolution and RGB hdmi black interval (limited or full) are you using on tv? I said it because on fullrgb the image become extreme grayed or blue to me, just look perfect black on limited but clips black details.
I think a lot of the VGA to HDMI dongles have an issue where they're never quite Limited or Full, sadly! I ended up using an OSSC in the end as it handled the black levels perfectly. I think setting it to limited and adjusting brightness in game might be the best you can do with the dongles.
Dude this song is fucking dope. This is basically a music video.
Great review!
Found some with usb c ! Are all those cards having the same chip also having same specs and performance ?
I'm honestly not sure! So long as it mentions that exact chip you should be ok. I've heard that the USB-C models allow you to capture to a mobile phone but I can't confirm that!
What music is this??
It's just a track I threw together because I needed some background music 🙂
what song?@@tunnotron3000
A Tunnotron SONG Included with in the review? Blessed. This looks like a fun platformer!
There is no way the Xbox 360 is old enough to smoke. Thing can't even handle room temperature.
Maybe all those 360s got the red ring of death because they couldn't regulate their heat due to the coolness of smoking ciggies.
