A step-by-step guide on how to apply your own makeup from foundation to lips. Choose the right products, tones, and application to make your performance stand out!
It would have been good to see her in gray-scale (black and white) after you had finished so that we could see how she would have looked in a 1940's film. :-) Great video, very interesting.
latex isn’t supposed to be that close to someone’s eye. it was almost touching the corner of her eye.
where did you get the wolf nose??
Great tutorial. Complete beginner and I really appreciated the info about shading for different types of theaters.
+Digisciple My pleasure! Glad it could help. I would add, however, if you are in a small theater, I rarely recommend a full face of makeup. This is good for a larger auditorium.
very nice, Andy looks so adorable :)
this is one of the most comprehensive tutorials I've seen thus far on UA-cam, I will be sure to post my experiment here! I can't believe more people don't like/have commented on this video - thank you so much! Well done! One question: what color(s) would you suggest for medium blue eyes (upon appearance) to achieve the 1920s effect? (for more specifics - slight hazel ring around the pupil and frosted tealish, mainly azure w/ light blue flecks)
Thank you for your amazing tutorial. You explained everything to make this doable for us without makeup experience.

This is a great tutorial, but the music in the background is distracting.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
awesome!
I love this! Please, please do a video detailing how you created those perfect lips though please X
Is the castor sealer good to use for any type of painting after laying down liquid latex or only for everyday makeup? Also, what does the spirit gum do? Is it just a glue safe to use on skin? How difficult is it to take off spirit glue?
+Mr. Dude Castor seal is good prior to any type of makeup and acrylic paint. I made a Shrek mask out of foam latex and sealed with castor seal prior to applying the acrylic. It works! Spirit gum is a safe glue for applying prosthetic pieces and facial hair. It's easy to remove with soap and water.
Hi
Where can I buy the wolf nose?? This is awesome
I bought it for $3.00 at the costume shop.
This is seriously so amazing wow
so I'm doing this with a twist-- granny on top instead of red - question - with the wolf nose you used, could she shut her mouth and talk pretty easy?
Sorry! I just saw this. Yes, the mouth opens easily. I want to see your look!
Daniel Klingler I did this look twice this Halloween and both times it was a huge hit! ! However, instead of being red, I was the wolf inside of granny.
I love that Valerie!
Are you on fb?? That's where my picture is. . Not sure how to tag you on Google plus to see it
I would recommend applying multiple layers of the gray make-up because she looks like she's a zombie. You can see some of the flesh color show through, and it looks very splotchy to me.
I agree, but his video is good as a demonstration, which I think is all he meant for it to be, but he should have mentioned what you said here.
Any advice as to how to apply this to darker skin? My wife and I want to go as a couple from a black and white 1968 film. She's white and will be playing a white character, so this tutorial is great for her, but does this same technique apply to me? Any help?
I came across a black women doing this, her results were better than mine, and I'm white. I'm not sure this is workable for everyone. My face constantly looks blueish, but less so on camera. People I ask say it looks blue/teal. Then I run into problems getting good coverage and as i apply more to get good coverage it gets blotchy, and the blotchyness is blue-like in nature. Maybe you just need the right natural skin color and the right product. I've taken on some Halloween projects, i mean sculpting prosthetics and molding them. I was surprised my sculpting skills worked out so well. This doesn't seem probable for me to achieve. I know people seem to have their base grey, then darker and light shades to contour and highlight. However, nobody ever talks about how to get past that blue tint which makes you look like a bad try of doing Avatar. Best advice I can give you is to search "troll makeup", grayscale makeup, pleasentville makeup.
So helpful! I love it! Love the quality, the advice and tips! Perfect, thank you! :)
Oh god, thank you for this! We have a Performing Arts class and I wanted to get a heads up on our next lesson, which is theater makeup. Oh, by the way, are the products you mentioned available in the Philippines? Thanks.
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for some more videos in the near future.
Love it ....
This is really amazing! I would have never thought about doing something like this.
I would like to see a transformation of a male to female and female to male.
In the case of facial hair, I color the facial hair in black and the lips in a light grey. If you cover the lips in black there is no separation. I use Mehron Starblend in Black or you could use a black creme makeup on the facial hair. Apply with a tooth brush. Thanks for watching!
The ony problem I can see with men are facial hair that can get in the way of makeup around mouth and chin area.
In terms of foundation there is no difference. You want to the skin to be gray. As is the case, women usually wear more makeup so would require more contouring and highlighting to replicate their makeup. If you watch my mens video for the stage, basically, that is essentially the same application using black and white makeup for men.
Aren't guys easier to do than women? It would seem that girls would need to have makeup applied to mimic having makeup on with the effect of greyscale. Guys, on the other hand, it is natural skin tone under greyscale.
Question! I'm going to be doing this for my halloween costume (grayscale), and I'm going to be using Kryolan Aquacolor body paint. Apparently it's a water activated makeup that is not cream based. Any suggestions for working with something like that?
Great question Dawn. Honestly, not a big fan of blush on men. Unless they truly are looking washed out. Start with a contour below the cheek bone (per the video). If you need a little color a "coral" tone on the cheek is best. Under lights it neutralizes. I find a lot of school putting way to much makeup on men. If its a smaller theater men may only need powder. Hope that helps!
Great question. As you watch the video there is a clip of male I did for a show. When you apply the full coverage light grey you are removing all contrast. You will need to add that in, even on a male model. As Brooque613 shared, cover the eyebrows with either a black mascara or a tooth brush and black creme makeup. Line the eyes in black. Eyelashes with black mascara. You can use black or grey to contour just under the cheek bones and around the jaw line. That should be sufficient. Thanks!!
I would recommend not lining the eyes as thickly, but definitely do a thicker brow (you can probably even just brush the guy's natural eyebrows with a dark black mascara), and gently build up the shading on the lips with medium grays instead of black. Otherwise, contouring of the face should be the same. If you need a little help, take a picture of the guy in semi-harsh lighting and switch it to B&W - that'll show you the realistic contouring for his face (you can do that for women too).
If I were to use this tutorial for a male makeup, how would I need to change it?
Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely put that in the que!
I would love to see a stage old age makeup!
You don't necessarily need powder to set because "Mehron Starblend" makeup is a water based makeup. It is a powder that dries completely. You would need to use powder if you were using a cream makeup.
Thanks for your comment! And thanks for the tip about snazaroo. I will definitely look into it. Part of the problem was my sponge. As I was filming I realized I had left the sponge at the theater. I can get a stronger application with a seafoam sponge.
but do you use a powder to set it?
thanks for the tip! snazeroo is the most readily available brand here in London :D
this makeup tutorial is pretty good!! i just want to point out that i could still see her skin tone. in the future i recommend using snazaroo!! i paint myself grey a lot due to comicons and such and ive tried a lot of diffrent makeups. snazaroo covers very well, practically melts off of you with a little soap, is very comfortable and stays nicely if you seal it right!!
the model looks very good. and i like your makeup steps! very informative!
the model looks very good.
