Buried Alive: Scottish Folklore Between Life and Death - Stories of Scotland Podcast - Episode 104
Stories of Scotland return with our weirdest Halloween episode yet. We examine the freaky folklore of people being buried alive, from the founding of St Columba’s Iona Abbey to the spooky sinister Lady with the Ring lore.
We consider whether horses in the attic are truly the best possible way to tell if you are being haunted. This episode ties Scottish legends of being buried alive to European traditions and even goes all the way to America.
Is Taphophobia an irrational fear, or something that can help us understand wider ideas about the human experience, life and death? Listen for top tips on how to survive your burial.

My great grandfathers grave is on top of Tomnahurich hill. He was an auctioneer in the 1800s. His name was George Hamilton. Other members of my family are also buried there. There is a street beside M&S called Hamilton street which is named after him and the family business of Hamiltons auctions which used to stand where Morrisons supermarket is now.

Very well done, as a very proud Scot's Highlander, most refreshing to hear the awful truth and unspoken details about Culloden's aftermath, the so called "Pacification Of The Highlands!" Growing up in Lochaber I always felt our culture had a wealth and richness no money could buy. So many still ride along on the mythology and fancy associated with the Battle, as a Burnsian I visited the Battle Field and the sobering feel similar to Glen Coe is still chilling and unsettling to this day.

The pictures of the places you were talking about instead of just scenic views of Scotland. don't get me wrong. Scotland is beautiful. However, when you're talking about these places, I don't even know what they look like. help me understand better 🙏

22:22 Sir James Douglas (also known as Good Sir James and the Black Douglas) also tried to take a heart (in his case, of Robert the Bruce) to Jerusalem in the Holy Land of Israel and passed away in his efforts to aid the Iberian Reconquista. Remarkably magnificent men of history.

I have Johnston forebears, particularly Gilbert, senior and Gilbert, jr. who fought for Bonnie Prince Charley at Culloden. Gilbert, senior was wounded but father and son escaped to Northern Irelandand from there to the North Carolina Colon😊was where Gilbert, senior’s older brother, was the royal Governor! Some story! And I am satisfied it is more or less a true tale. Scots are a hardy lot!

War crimes. The actions of the Hanoverian army after the battle of Culloden, on the field of battle and off...today we would call them war crimes. Atrocities. Violations of international human law. Crimes against humanity. Mass genocide. Forced depopulation and transfer is one of the (many) things of Slobodan Milošević and his allies were charged with. This is not ANY different.

My great aunt said she thinks it was changed from Johanson. But nope, I'm Scottish/Irish. Ancestry from the Johnston/e clan. So this all all new and exciting for me. I am descended from Clan Johnston of Caskieben. It is my understanding we descend from the Border Reivers but around 1350, a Stiven De Johnston split off and formed the Caskieben branch in Aberdeenshire. What was that life like? Was it completely different from the Reiver life? Thanks and terrific video!!!
