    I really liked this video. You guys have such great chemistry. Hope you make mroe videos together in the future. When it comes to books I prefer plot driven over characters but that doesn't mean I can't read a character driven book, it's just that I'm okay with a story having two-dimensional characters or superficial characters as long as the plot is good, but I'm less forgiving of a story when it has good characters but a bad plot. I'm pretty much the same with movies. When I rediscovered my love for reading books 20 years ago I started with a lot of sci-fi books written in the 19th century-because they were public domain by then, and I absolutely loved them, and in most of those books from that era there's very little character development. I mean development as in characters that feel fleshed out, and alive. The main focus was always the plot, and I was perfectly fine with that! When you think about it, when someone is telling you a good story, it's all about how the person tells it and how good the "plot" or events of the story are, and I think this carries over to novels too. You can have a writer who writes pretty but if the story is bad at its inception, then the book won't hold your attention, and vise versa. You MUST have both qualities reach a certain level or standard for a novel to be enjoyable. Each person will have their own baseline but I think that if one of those qualities lag too far behind the other, it'll make any person stop reading it, no matter how forgiving the reader is. That Joker film was amazing. Definitely one of the best performances in cinema, but it's Joaquin Phoenix so there was no doubt his performance was going to be good. You should check out another movie of his, a low sci-fi/romance film called "Her". J.J., you cracked me up with what you said about the Catcher in the Rye. I've known about that book from about the time I was in high school, if not before, and just reading the bookk's description it's never been something I can convince myself to read. Just sounds so boring. Maybe if I give it a chance I'd end up liking it but there's SO MANY BOOKS on my list that I want to read that I'm more interested in that I just can't justify reading it now. hahaha.

    • @kimmorist
      @kimmorist 5 місяців тому

      I think you and I are definitely on the same page when it comes to character driven vs plot driven. And I did watch “Her” years ago and it left me feeling a little… icky? Haha idk I think maybe that was the intention with the film. I’d like to rewatch it though. And yes, don’t waste your time with Catcher in the rye!

    Over the past few years I've heard and read writing advice from different popular and published authors (past and present), and also what their specific workflow might look like when compared to others. One thing I kept coming across what's the sentiment that most of what you write or ideas you come up with will be bad. You have to keep practicing and figuring out what is bad or wrong with what you wrote and improving upon it. Creative writing is a grind until you finally can pick out a precious gem that you will be proud of. Your dad is absolutely right, it is a learning! Practice makes perfect. I wish you the best of luck and I'll be supporting you along the way.

    PATIENCE: I am the most impatient man you'll likely ever meet. But, I have learned in the world of writing, you must have patience. BELIEF: Believe in yourself. You are right about where you should be in the current stage of your writing career. Doubting yourself can be crippling. From what I've seen thus far, YOU ROCK!!!!!!

      Absolutely! Patience and belief are a couple of the virtues I had to refine on my writing journey. Both will get you where you need to be in the end. 🤘🏻
