Why we calling women “females”? Lost my interest right there.

Although Nosferatu is visually very good, there's no background to Nosferatu's character in the way that there was for Coppola's Dracula. Stephen King did a better job of ripping off Nosferatu for his Salem's Lot vampire than Nosferatu has done in ripping off Bram Stoker's Dracula. As to diversity in horror - whatever your background is, you have to show intelligence in writing it first. Diversity for the sake of it doesn't work if it's not smart. There's a good reason why Western audiences have picked up on horror and thrillers from Japan and South Korea in recent years: because their writing is smart.

For me: 10.The First Omen; 9.Marley; 8.Civil War; 7.Immaculate; 6.Bad Boys 4; 5.Dune pt2; 4.Kneecap; 3.Deadpool & Wolverine; 2.Trap; 1.Smile 2. Tough keeping Venom and Blink Twice out. Didn't see, but wanted to, Juror no.2 and Beekeeper - they sound like my type of movie and might have made my 10. Didn't see Mufasa and Wicked - and don't want to.

Just finished watching this and I don't understand the hate it gets, I am absolutely kicking myself that I allowed myself to listen to the critics and not watch this in the cinema. Profound and totally thought provoking, got me questioning my own thought processes and judgement. Some scenes I felt were a bit "meh" but generally still a brilliant film. With an underlying yet clear message! I agree with you J very very brave from Todd Phillips.

Watched this film a while back due to your recommendation being an avid boxing fan. Really enjoyed it and felt like it filled in a lot of missing parts of what i thought I knew of George Foreman. I never really disliked young George in the film due to how hard a life he had, so many obstacles in his way but he punched his way through hehe. Great review and keep it going bruh!

My family and I loved the film and Rafiki was fantastic - the spiritual glue!!

But Taka / Scar… I’m literally crying 😭😭😢 Reprimanded as a cub for saving a stray, although he “always wanted a brother”… …. then losing to Mufasa in the race to the tree (disappointment #2) ….then being a coward in both dad’s and mum’s eyes when he ran away from the attack (disappointment #3) ….then trying really hard to get the girl, but he got no ‘riz and Mufasa has to help him out… ….not being brave enough still when it came to protecting said lioness…. ….getting a freebie when Mufasa says it was Taka who saved her…. ….not being the smart one who thought of covering their tracks in the snow…. ….then the final blow, Sarabi works out it’s all Mufasa’s doing and poor Taka loses all hope of ever making his folks proud by marrying a princess 🦁😭😭 “Never underestimate the power of jealousy and the power of envy to destroy!” 😢 This cub could’ve done with some positive affirmations 💔

Presumably Lex has managed to do a deal with Superman's enemies that has helped turn people against him. Crypto the dog might be an engineered k9. Gunn is possibly taking a lead from Guardian's Rocket to bring a bit of levity to the story.

I went to see the film with someone who looks just like you. Exact lookalike and same name. We loved it! 🤣

Denzel's performance was out of Training Day's conniving-crook-given-authority Alonzo, especially in finality it appeared like he could've said the lines from Training Day - "You took off my arm, Lucius...I'm the Emperor! I run Rome, you just live here!..." To compare Mescal with Crowe: Mescal's performance was primarily of a farmer, a sometime reluctant defensive fighter (made as such through advances by Rome into the part of north Africa to which he'd escaped as a youth): His rage for what befell his wife drove his gladiatorial spirit, whereas with Maximus it had been primarily as an offense driven general with ambition to settle down as a farmer, then gladiator (driven by similar rage). Maximus was the more skilled and experienced fighter. Thus Mescal's character and performance was apt for his background. Pedro: Needed as the offense driven general Maximus was, holding his ideals, but disillusioned by the two pansy boys running Rome, and the glue which linked Lucius to his previous life. All in all, not as good as the first, but good nonetheless.

The movie's conceit is personifying psychological trauma and making it viral. Very creative, I think. The horror is an emergent part of what the character Riley has to do to rid herself of her affliction. A very smart script.

I've had pleasure encountering a couple of good of very good horror movies fairly recently - it the very good category I would put The First Omen, Talk to Me which you already mentioned and now "Smile 2". I agree with you that primarily it is a drama, the horror elements in this movie are just its "clothes", its essence is psychological struggle of the character, actually just like in the movies, one feature and one short which preceded it. Naomi Scott is excellent as the lead and funnily enough the other two movies I mentioned also work largely because of exceptional lead performance by unknown to wider audience actresses, Nell Tiger Free and Sophie Wilde. While I would say Smile 1 is not obligatory viewing it gives "Smile 2" better flavor. Just like a short "Laura hasn't slept" gives better flavor to "Smile 1"

Full disclosure: I haven't watched the new show; I came here hoping to get an idea of how it is. That being said, I wholly disagree with your suggestion that "girls will never like batman as much as boys". The MOST enthusiastic batman fans I know are girls (I'm talking full, classic anthologies on the shelves that have been read multiple times, seen ALL the shows and movies, and reading/watching marathons every time it's "bat" time of year). I'm not saying that girls are the majority of fans, but I'd argue that the majority of Batman fans don't even watch the animated shows or read the comics these days. There's nothing about being a woman that precludes someone from enjoying well-written fictional characters. "I'm not ok with show's that I want to watch as a boy being 'diluted'" is such a weird stance. The idea that "Batman is for boys" is such a corporate marketing idea. Batman is for everyone. Storytelling is for humans. That doesn't mean everyone is gonna enjoy every story, and that's fine. But trying to make Batman 'for boys' is no better than trying to make Batman 'for girls'. The best stories, the ones that get remembered and passed on aren't the ones that were made for a given audience, they're the ones that are true to their narrative and characters and let them come to life in ways that make us see them as real. Comic characters are some of my favorites because they get the genuine opportunity to explore their own characterization through basically infinite contexts. The idea that being true to that character means they'll always be exactly the same and identical in every form is so... boring. It's comics, man! There's so much fun to be had in seeing how our favorite heroes and villains change and react when details in their universe are tweaked!

On Shyamalan casting non-whites in central roles: He doesn't need to "advocate" for anyone. He's picked the bankable talents for the lead in his big three: Unbreakable, Split and Glass. I wouldn't question Shyamalan's motives to do what he wants any more than I'd question Jordan Peele's. The alternative extreme is currently Disney where everyone is "advocated for" and any white man role is that of an inept sissy boy. On the question of Lady Raven: A very talented singer. Perhaps the cool by which she handled the situation at the end of the concert was what led to the claim that she's not a good enough actor. But her reactions were apt for the role. She didn't emote hysterics. I suspect Lady Raven could've been modelled on Ariane Grande who didn't break down and on the whole outwardly kept cool after the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. So, "nepobaby" maybe, but good enough for the what was expected of her. I look forward to see if Shyamalan uses the characters from this film further. I suspect he might.

The droids, Ash from the original and Andy (after he had his disc replaced with the directive to serve the interests of The Company), were the most engaging characters. The female lead was the the Sigourney Weaver survivor; in these films it's obvious who's going to be Alien food fodder. There was a reference to Prometheus (a welcome one, I liked that movie) in the creation of the hybrid. Overall a decent movie - disagree with you in that I think the final third was the better part - not as good as Alien and its sequel, not as good as Prometheus which had a more ambitious scope.

It wasn’t bad but wasn’t great. By the end of the first act I didn’t care if anyone of the characters died. Unlike the other movies, there was no connection to the crew. Given, this could be due to not being in the target audience. This has the same issue as the Prometheus films in that it just expects the audience to already be invested in the characters rather than developing characters so that the audience can develop a bond. My conspiracy is that if a character is fully developed it runs the risk of alienating 😎 a proportion of viewers. Also as you mentioned, characters made some boneheaded choices that seems to be a carry over from the Prometheus films.
