After Bremen from Masters of the Air
WW2, mission by the Bloody 100th Bomb Group to bomb Nazi submarine pens in Bremen Germany. Features surprising return of Blakely’s B-17 crew to the base .
During the 90-minute battle returning to England the Blakely’s gunners downed 9 enemy fighters. His B-17 was seriously crippled with 2 engines out, over 1,200 holes from flak, machine gun bullets & cannon shells. Just a Snappin felt to have crashed in Germany but miraculous piloting brought the B-17 back. Crash landed far from the base. Delayed on return to base. Everyone thought they were missing in action.
Pilot Blakely, navigator Harry Crosby and bombardier James Douglass returned unexpectedly.

B-17, 100th Bomb Group, Black Week Bremen Mission "Just a Snappin" October 1943
Mr Blakey, thanks for this great video. My distant relatives had a cigar shop in Bremen that was destroyed during (I believe) this raid. That part of my family had three sons who served as German Infantrymen and I have one of their diary’s their adventures from the western front to the eastern front and back to the western front. All three survived the war. I’d love to find out more about the Bomb damage in the ground in Bremen. All my relatives who I could ask… have passed on. Thanks again for your great research and video.
great info thanks i live near Thorpe Abbots and have been there a few times i rate any airfield in East Anglia that Americans flew from as sacred ground
Why did they make they make the Ball Touret gunner area so SMALLLLLLL !!!!!!
My great uncle was a belly gunner in David Miner’s crew his name was Varden Ione Butler. March 6th his crew got shot down on their 25 mission. They flew on the 8,9, of October. I believe their plane turned around on the 10th of October they were in the 418 squadron. Where could I find the planes that turned back that day??
Wow!!!! Excellent video! Very informative! Thanks to your father!!!!!!
The British RAF had been bombing Germany since 1949. Just in case it slipped your mind old boy.
1939!😁
Are you sure that the attack on Munster was focussed on military targets? That does not accord with other primary source evidence which suggests that the central aiming point was the steps of the Munster Cathedral at noon (timed for when the civilians would be leaving church after Sunday Mass)
My great uncle flew Just A Snappin to Hanau on October 4th 1943 just before the mission you highlighted. It was his second mission. Thank you for the presentation!
Crew Member of the Hells Belle / wrote the script for Stalag 17 / Ponderosa and Hunter
Have read the book, 'Masters of the Air', very good...
Just a snappin' is a legend to those who have heard the story
Really enjoyed this comprehensive mission history. Outstanding tribute to the effort. Shame some of these brave men did not survive. You did them proud with this memory
Jim, well done!!! I enjoyed your presentation enormously. I almost feel I know you dad because two days ago I finished reading Harry Crosby's wonderful book. Before that, I read Masters of the Air from cover to cover, gleaning new insights from every page. What your dad, his crew, and all the other veterans of the "Bloody Hundredth" accomplished at such great personal cost is nothing short of astonishing. The scale of it and the courage required are without equal. It's a point of pride that the Nazi war machine never turned back an Eighth Air Force attack. How does a grateful nation and a saved world ever say sufficient thanks? I'm 70 now and have been supremely humbled and profoundly grateful to those of the "Mighty Eighth" since I was a kid. To those who made the supreme sacrifice, those who came home with shattered bodies, and those who returned intact but forever changed by their experiences, we owe everything. We will forever be grateful.
I'm a 62 yr old Canadian and the older I get the more I appreciate the sacrifice these men and women made for us.Not seeing family for 4 yrs the loss of crews and friends every day the absolute sacrifice these great people made so we could have the life and feeedoms alot of these men didn't get to see. And they were 19,20-24 years old. God Bless Them!!
Outstanding. Thanks. Semper Fidelis...!
Speaking of Bremen being "flak city"? Should have reviewed the early March, '44, Berlin missions.
We definitely need to remember our true past history, and not bow to those who want to destroy our Constitutional Republic. Thanks for your video. 😇
Thank you for this complete and instructive vid. It's one of the best I've ever seen. Many thanks to you and the all the men who flew in the 8th.
Thankyou for this
All aircrew where very brave men in world war 2 with the way the world is now viruses drugs wish it could have been better
My uncle was Charlie Via (my mother's brother). The courage of the crew on this and other missions was unbelievable. I've read A Wing and a Prayer as well as the article in True Magazine. Thank you for producing this and keeping their sacrifices alive in our memories.
