The Music of Erich Zann by H. P. Lovecraft Review and Analysis
The Music of Erich Zann is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft. This is definitely my favorite short story so far. I love the scene of the run-down pedestrian street up a steep hill with twisty houses. I love the two main characters - a poor, struggling student and an elderly musician. I love the idea of a music battle.
There are a LOT of spoilers in my discussion, so be sure to read The Music of Erich Zann.

The Tomb by H. P. Lovecraft Review and Analysis

The Tomb is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft. This is one of Lovecraft's simpler stories. We start with a young man in a mental asylum. He proceeds to tell us he's been put there because he's been spending every day and night in a nearby tomb doing things he can't really talk about. There are a LOT of spoilers in my discussion, so be sure to read The Tomb. hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction...

The Picture in the House has great details about the rural New England location. It introduces the environment of the Miskatonic Valley and Arkham. I enjoy those aspects of the story. The African aspects - not so much. Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family is quite a strong presentation of the views Lovecraft had about women, about minorities, and about the taint of a spoiled family bloodline. god bless u, previoulsy I was struggling to fix this issue with no idea, then accidentally I came across your tutorial. Really helpful and easy to follow.
This is something that should be so obvious but isn't lol thank you for saving my fanfic bindings
Lifesaver! Thank you!
I think what HP Lovecraft was trying to say with the story. Is that all of our lives more or less are kind of like Joe Slater, we live in most cases dull tedious existences full of monotony. But this doesn't exclude the fact that perhaps in another realm the one of dreams we may live totally different. A vagrant on earth could be a president in his sleep state while shunned by all while awake. Also in the story HP Lovecraft described the waking State as that similar to something like simulation theory now. Apparently in the story the Earth is just a byproduct just a foggy memory a dream of your real self that is far greater and far more advanced traversing the rim of the Stars far away. The super being inside of Joe Slater is so refined but every night he still had to return to the Earth and live out his life as a pathetic man. Maybe that was HP Lovecraft trying to say no matter who you are demigod or joe slater life is always flawed and we must go through things that we don't choose to be put on us.
Thank you for this short but spot on video!
been searching for simple tutorial for this. Thank you very much, really help with my thesis' format :D!
This was so helpful! Thank you!
Why didn't you use mirror margin?
Yes, thank you!
you are a life saver. thank you. :)
It absolutely does NOT go downhill there's the haunter of the dark, the shadow over insmouth, the mountains of madness, the silver key, the horror at Red Hook, rats in the walls, pickman's model, the dunwich horror, the thing on the doorstep, the call of Cthulhu, dreams in the witch house, the outsider and many more but I do tell people it's important to read the silver key it does so much to kinda explain lovecraft himself
HP LOVECRAFT IN NOVEL,BOOK,STORY IS RACIST WHITE MEN,RACIST NAZI,RACIST JEWISH,WHITE SUPREMACISTS, PRO NAZISM, PRO ZIONISM, BUT IN MEDIA,NEWS,NEWSMEDIA,SOCIAL MEDIA,NEWS CHANNEL,MOVIE,UA-cam IS MR PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA. Because HP LOVECRAFT CAT IS MR PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA STEPFATHER.

How did you get the image like that in the first place? That is what I am struggling with.
So simple yet can mess an entire thesis. You saved my life
This is one I haven't read and the title is confusingly like another story
Great video, just what I needed starting out. One question. For setting Left/Right gutters for multiple pages, instead of messing with the Header Settings "Different Odd & Even Pages," why not back in the Layout/Margins/Page Setup window Margins Tab, under Pages where it says Multiple pages, just set that to Mirror Margins?
Great video
very helpful!

cool book how can i find/read it?
It should be on all platforms, here's the Amazon link - www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJH6X5FM/
Thank you so much for making this!
I'm glad you found it useful!
Just read this and the whole time I felt like I was on the outside of an inside joke Thanks for explaining it and bringing me a bit more inside the joke
This is a challenging story for that very reason. Lovecraft is writing 100 years ago and he's writing about HIS favorite old-time authors from many years before that. At least in our "modern times" we still have a sense of who Tolkien and CS Lewis and so on are, so if I wrote a story involving my dream-meeting of them people would have half a chance of knowing what I was talking about. The further back in time you go, the harder that becomes.
I’m just a little confused how this could both be part of dreamland and also prehistoric earth
This is one of the first stories Lovecraft ever wrote and I don't think he was even thinking about what the story fit into long term. He'd written a story about creepy castles with an immortal evil guy. He'd written a story about wanting to hang out with writers from the 1800s he liked. So he was just writing random things in those early days.
Does this still work the same after 3 years and v2? How do you deal with footnotes? Paragraph CAP etc? Unfortunately Affinity still doesnt have Epub function...
This is my favorite poem
My mother can still recite this one from memory :). Lots of people love this poem!
My birthday is also January 19
Very cool!
Thank you Ma'am.
You're welcome!
God bless you Lisa!! I was stuck and going crazy!
This is one of those things that people need to do all the time and it's hard to figure out. I had to figure it out for my own project - I'm glad my how-to is helping others.
Subscribed! Enjoying you experiencing these stories for the first time and sharing your thoughts
Thank you! I've read some of Lovecraft's works before but only a handful. It's interesting to read his library from the beginning and watch the progression.
Good Analysis 👍
Thank you. Polaris was definitely an interesting story.
I also started going through all stories of Lovecraft, only in German. It's nice to have your reviews I recently stumbled upon, please keep it up❤
It's interesting that you're reading them in German. So much of Lovecraft is about his specific word choices and the inflection of those words. I wonder how well that translates into German.
@@workfromhomelisashea yeah, I try to be as close as possible word by word with my translations I also compare with other German translations. Translating it directly from the original - as German often uses more words to describe the same than English - sometimes makes for very very long (and unpleasant) scentences some other translators of various publishers have simplified. But I like it so, it was just his style. (And maybe mine)😁
Ah, I think there was a misunderstanding at first: I do the readings and my podcast about it in German, but ofc I read the original to do so :)
Thank you, it worked! But now I have another problem; how can I separate them with a period in between?
What I would do is add a period and space before the second line word / phrase. Visually on the chapter page itself it will look like a cool formatting presentation.

God bless you Lisa

Great!! Synopsis new subscriber
I found it really interesting how Lovecraft - a person who lived in Providence - was so strongly repelled by all things watery. And that he then wrote about a sailor character who had this revulsion.
Three years since your video, and Publisher is no closer to exporting to ePub. Why is that? Vellum makes the process easy but is expensive. Apple Pages (free) handles text and graphics beautifully and exports to ePub with the click of a button. Indesign is expensive and cumbersome, but even it gets the job done. Affinity Publisher … nada. I have been asking Affinity for years now.
Very good analysis! I agree 100% I'd always assumed that every descendant (male and female) was cursed and died early, but that it just took a few generations of those around them to notice. I also got the drift that the decaying château and lands immediately around it was mostly all that Antoine still possessed and most of his fief had likely been abandoned or taken over by other nobles nearby, but you're very right that Lovecraft never specifies this anywhere. Antoine exists in that strange sort of narrative stasis that so many early weird protagonists seemed to occupy... never having to worry about food, clothes, shelter, cutlery, or even noblesse oblige but also never advancing or improving his state. Even if the family servants (except Pierre) have all fled the sinking ship... you're right, where are his apples, potatoes, goats, and chickens? Where are his sisters and cousins and nieces? A few years ago I took a stab at improving this story myself (since it's in the public domain), but I confess I still ignored this perfectly sensible expectation that a lot of the extended family would very likely still be around. I think Lovecraft was trying to depict terrible loneliness and loss of privilege (apparently his own family was fairly wealthy but lost almost everything during his parents' and his own generations). He captures that pretty well, even if he does so by sacrificing a lot of believability. Nonetheless, it's probably far better than anything I wrote at age 18 ;)
Yes certainly as a teen Lovecraft was writing this to work through his own very real issues of loneliness and lost wealth. And you're right, he was a fairly talented writer for that age!
Thanks a lot!
I'm glad to help!
Thank you for the short and concise insight on the story Much appreciated 👏
I enjoyed this one as an insight into Lovecraft as a lonely author who didn't really feel like he fit in with other people in his group.
Finally! Someone with a clue that explained things clearly. Hallelujah
I'm glad to be a help :). Book gutters are fairly foundational to book layout.
thank you, it reaaly helped me
I'm glad you found it helpful!
thank you
You're welcome! I do this quite a lot so I figured it would help others out.
Really a life saver, thanks a lot.

Great. Can you use different fonts for the first and second line of the chapter header?
Yes absolutely, you can have the two different lines have whatever fonts or sizes or colors you wish - ua-cam.com/video/yhTLcuwlRD8/v-deo.html
❤
awesome tutorial -thanks Lisa!
I'm glad it was helpful!
I use Kindle Create, it even has an option for image-heavy books where you can upload the print-ready pdf (the one you exported from AP and the same you use for paperback/hardcover publishing) and get a perfect replica of the printed book. I know this isn't good if you mean to publish outside Amazon but, if you're going for KDP anyway, Kindle Create makes everything way easier.
thank you so muchh this really save my lifee❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm glad you found the tutorial useful!
Thank you so much! You are a gem!
