I was in the Corporate Relations Team of The Post Office Corporation back in the 1990’s when Royal Mail started to expand into building purpose built sorting offices on major rail routes. These were to accommodate both the new trains and to facilitate mail getting into the PRDC at Willesden. My last role, before moving into broadcasting regulation, was to organise the official opening of Bristol Parkway. I recall we had produced a leaflet, intended for distribution to post offices, which told with some excitement our plans to move the majority of road transported mail into the new network of trains. The leaflet, which had been approved by the very top had been printed and the first box delivered to my office. I was to give copies to the board members and the transport team ahead of their distribution to the post office network. I gave the leaflet a quick glance, not having been involved in their production. I then said to my boss, “aren’t we moving from road to rail?” To which she gave a resounding “yes!”. I then pointed out to her that the leaflet, the text of which had been through several senior managers hands, clearly said the opposite. Snatching the leaflet from my hand she hurriedly read the message. Without hesitation she told me to telephone the printers and get them to stop the run. I did. 20 million leaflets were pulped! They should have kept them. They would’ve been right now! What a sad state of affairs. First the TPO went now this… disgraceful!

Oh no. That’s so sad. They shouldn’t have to retire. They’re one of the reasons post gets posted worldwide. These trains are helpful to deliver post to certain areas where ever they are. I hate it when these trains retire or get scrapped. 😢😢😢

Actually, mail trains might still continue, as some Class 321's have been re-used by Swift Express. They better preserve at least ONE Class 325, or I'll be FUMING.

The only time I ever saw one of these was during a trainspotting trip to Crewe, where one passed through at speed. I didn't get to capture it. I've seen one, and so I'm happy. Shame.

Another moment of "progress" for the UK 😣 Sad to see, but probably inevitable with the ongoing digitisation of the economy. I will miss seing that distinctive red and yellow livery on the railways. I do hope this doesn't equate to more lorries on our already congested and badly maintained roads!

I'm surprised to see that the UK were still running mail trains in the first place. I mean the French withdrew the TGV Postal in 2015 and here in NL we don't have mail trains anymore since 1997 (Germany stopped in 1997 as well), all citing (a lack of) cost effectiveness. So very surprised to learn this, but I think it has become inevitable with how few letters are being sent these days.

So, Government try to force people away from cars and onto rail and buses but huge company Royal Mail dispenses with rail and goes to road transport.

Noooooooooooo, I loved the 325 mail trains. Mail rail has it's viability and it's honestly saddening to see Royal Mail fail to keep these running, since it's not like they're a lost cause or anything. Guess they really like those delious fumes from those enviromentally friendly lorries a bit too much. F to pay respects.

I didn't realise yhey were finishing so soon. I'm even happier then that i managed to get one at Milton keynes central when i was last over on the 12th.

Gosh didn’t even know Royal Mail would seize operations after 200 years. This is historical, would’ve definitely made a journey to see this for the first and final time. I missed the 68’s withdrawal and I wouldn’t have missed this for anything. The 325’s should be converted to passenger trains like they did for the 769/799’s.
