very true. I agree with you. It depends on the level of students and how you approach the concept. Introducing this new concept of pi with grade 8 students is quite difficult. In the third chapter of Grade 8, we introduce the concept of irrational numbers. To explain irrational numbers like square root of 2, we usually use a calculator to show them its decimal value and tell them that even the calculator cannot give you its exact value since it is irrational. But you can get its value to some extent using a calculator. This is the reason why I said using a calculator to get the value of pi.
