    Hi, could you tell us the ratio of linseed oil and Gamsol in that medium thank you in advance

    • @cameronschmitzfineart
      @cameronschmitzfineart 27 днів тому

      As a starting "lean" oil painting medium I use roughly 2 parts Gamsol to 1 part Refined Linseed Oil. (Or you can also do 3 parts gamsol to 1 part linseed oil). As I layer my paintings over and over, and over the duration of time and when paintings are in the final stages where parts of the painting have thicker layers of paint, I modify my medium to become "fattier" where I am adding more refined linseed oil into my medium mixture. The proportions become more like 1:1 ratio. If I am wanting to paint over thicker, impasto areas of paint my medium becomes even fattier to be 1 part gamsol to 2 parts refined linseed oil. The nice thing about starting with a simple relatively "lean" recipe of either 2 parts gamsol to 1 part linseed oil or 3 parts gamsol to 1 part linseed oil is that you can easily modify it to become fattier over time, when you want to build your painting "fat over lean". In my courses I talk more about this, as well as other options for medium mixtures. I hope that helps!

      YES, exactly! We need duller, less saturated areas in order to accentuate the vibrancy of our other color notes in the painting, and vice versus!

    Thank you for this video. Barbara confirmed my instincts; I walked away from a teacher who praised student work that looked like hers, and openly criticized in a group of students those that were unlike hers. I expected to learn processes and techniques, not how to be a clone.

      Our individual style as artists is the most important thing that we bring to the world. Art is the voice artists use to tell their personal story. I love to see artists at any level challenge themselves to experiment and step outside their comfort zone to learn and grow!

    I am catching this interview many months later. Loved the interview, and of course Joe's artistic quilts. I wondered though how Joe finishes the quilts for display - does he still use wadding? Quilting patterns? Frames for mounting the quilts?
