I just found out about concentric pots, they're very cool. On a side note, who is the artist of the music in the background???
That’s just some iOS jam thingy I made. iPad stuff. Check out Jakob Haq. He’s the iPad music app guru
@@ticktockfool I had a feeling. I really like the music, good job! And thank you for the reference.
Might as well use a switch, the stock volume pots on my American Fender Jazz don’t blend, you can’t hear the lower volume p-up until it’s turned up 85-90%.
@@michaelanthony9068 I hear ya. That’s 50% of the reason why I make all these different models is because of those borderline useless pots that Fender uses called J taper pots. You’re right. They’re basically on off switches.
Great video - I'm definitely interested in this for my TF bass! Question for you though - have you experimented with series/parallel wiring on the TF bass? I've seen some use a telecaster-style blade switch with a fourth position for series mode, but I'm also wondering how a Free-Way 3B3 blade switch would work - it would give you a total of 6 positions with out-of-phase options as well.
Yeah, a free way would give you more options. S/P, phase etc. Yes, played with S/P on various J basses and PJ basses as well as out of phase. Completely viable sounds if you need them in a J or a PJ.
I'm using cts 450g series 250k both . Hand built.
Hey. Do you relic your plates? I have an old 60s fender.
@@alexkidd4144 I keep old plates that I come across. Message me on reverb or eBay and I’ll send you a pic of what I have.
I put one of these in my Modulus VJ4 and I Love it! It has performed perfectly for years in coastal conditions. I can't recommend it enough.
@@davidwhi2703 that’s awesome! Great to hear!
2:05 that p-bass be sounding like 🪳🥾 11:13 🤣
Ya well, then you don't have any control on the blend.
@@jethrofrancis1470 that’s the point
7:57 dat lick
Hahahahah;)
@@ticktockfool Actually more like 7:55. That whole phrase, could you break down how you approach playing something like that? I know it's jazz, I just can't string phrases together like that yet
@@tudore_jams I think of them as little phrase with target notes that I’m going for. Basically I’d dance around the F on a G7 and target the E on the following Cmaj for example.
@@ticktockfool I see. Little phrases, being mindful of leading tones and chord tones. It sounds so good, and inspiring to see lead bass playing! Thanks
@@tudore_jams check out some of Jens Larsen’s videos. It’s bebop oriented with great explanations
I'm building a Jazz Bass. I've bought a set of noiseless single coils for it. I'm wanting to install a tremolo bridge.
It would be nice if the video content matched this innovative idea.🎯
Were those white cables in the center lugs representing the hots of the pickup?
@@judasbrain6599 if I have cloth wires sticking up, black or white, they are for the end user to connect their pickup wires to.
@@ticktockfool that’s wild. I always thought the middle lug was the output lug! This video literally just helped me so much
@@judasbrain6599 it depends on more than that! This is independent wiring not dependent wiring! Be careful!
@@ticktockfool no I’m with ya! So the pickups don’t interact with each other’s vol/tone. I’ve just been drawing out a regular concentric pot layout and adding the 3way to the circuit. But THIS is what I wanted
Hey man these are awesome. Your stuff has been popping up in all my relentless searching for help on a diagram. Would you be willing to talk me through one? Concentric pots, 3 way pu selector, coil tap for the neck (Novak bs-ds). Is neck to coil tap, to pots, to selector and out OR neck to coil tap, to selector, to pots and out? Thank you for any of your time!
@@judasbrain6599 this is a severely complex little build. I do these in my head but the real trick is how to assemble them. I’ve got a “solder blog” in here somewhere building one. This is not an easy one.
@@ticktockfool think I just found a couple that should help. I’ve done a lot of partscasters with standard Fender applications, but wanna go all out for this jazz bass
Fender should make this.
Blend knobs rule. The fact you can set your tone and use a master volume is really handy.
So I made one of these last weekend after seeing your descecration version and decided I don’t need the pickup selector and started writing this before seeing you mention it at 1:30. You’re not paying yourself enough for these things! I’m not selling them but it easily cost me €150 for the components alone. Also I tried to tweak it, I thought about using 50s wiring instead of the kinman treble bleed, nope the tones then interfere. No trebble bleed? Then it takes ages to dial in a nice sound. There’s so much work that goes into these circuits. I should have just trusted you and bought one right out. But I guess then I wouldn’t appreciate how great it is.
Also I missed the resistors that you install at 46:30 and therefore retroactively had to go back and add them in. And squeezed everything together on the 4 hole plate with the two pots next to each other which was horrendous planning on my part (it fits if you use cheaper caps rather than your big bulky oil cigar tubes).
Im gonna do something similar to my crappy old peavey milestone 😁
This is awesome.
this is great idea. would you consider sharing a diagram? happy to contribute, i just dont need the parts
While not technologically new, so much emphasis is placed on pickups and even onboard pre-amps that something so simple (and powerful) as adding pots as a tone sculptor is overlooked. This little mod is like having 3 different Jazz basses in one instrument. Can you get it with a nickle plated cover plate?
All I have are standard chrome, Black, and gold
Wow, that's cool!
As a fellow tinkerer and Jazz bass user, I love seeing your experiments.
Hahahaha awesome
Another Awesome job Jeremy ! The one you built for me is doing a great job. Thank you so much !
@Jeremy Carriger what value resistor on the output connection?
The treble bleed is a 150k in series with a .001 uF cap
@@ticktockfool what about the resistors being soldered around the 40 minute mark?
@@ticktockfoolstill curious what the resistors at 40 minute mark are if you wouldn't mind sharing please.
Family recipe
@@ticktockfool I figured but thought I would ask anyway. Thanks.
That is another level of looping man, great! I came here from Eastwood guitars reviews of this guitar... Still don't know if I am about to buy Tenor or Tenor Baritone, but love how it sounds in your hands, keep going!
Very interesting project!! Is it possible use a "no load" tone pot like a CTS 250K Blender split pot (vintage audio taper 30% curve)?. Greetings from Italy!
Great question. You could add any type of pot you want to something like this. I’m not sure about the push pull pot though. I’m not sure if those are safe to open and cut the carbon tracking.
@@ticktockfool theoretically this kind of tone pot can be bypass the tone section at the maximum position. The result can be a super wide sound without tone section influence. Theoretically. but I didn't know the compatibility with your diagram..
Can this be done for a Fender Mustang guitar (not a bass)?
Of course. Contact me on reverb to work out the details.
Why hasn’t anyone done this for Fender guitars with a HH pickup layout?
hold it still and move your hand
this is so cool, thank you for showing your process!!
Cheers! I’ll keep these coming. … and get a lapel mic 😂
any tips for concentric pots
Can you please do a demo of the Execration?
That should already be up here. Is it not working? Anyway, I’m planning on updating most if not all of these videos. Too much rambling from me.
Just wanted to write a review after ordering the Desecration in case anyone is looking to get one! While looking for ideas for rewiring my Fender Player Jaguar PJ bass, I stumbled on this video. This wiring harness hit all the points I was looking for, separate Volume and Tone controls for P and J pickup, 3 way selector switch, and Series/Parallel switch. When I decided I was ready to commit to buying, I messaged Jeremy to ask a few questions regarding pot and cap values. Jeremy answered very quickly and we discussed how the wiring would affect the brightness of the pickups. He gave me options for which capacitors to install in the pickups, I went with .033 capacitors. Jeremy built and sent out the wiring harness very quickly. Within 3 days the order arrived. The Desecration was very easy to install and my initial reaction was this was precisely what I was looking for. It took a few days until I could crank my Super Bassman to really test drive the sounds I could get. From a pure P sound with the 3 way switch on the P pickup and in parallel mode, I was hooked. Flipping the series switch and adjusting the tones gives me the ability to dial in a nice passive humbucker sound that is not exact, but close to a passive Sting Ray sound. All in all, a week in and I'm extremely impressed with the Desecration and highly recommend it and will look to Jeremy for any future wiring for other basses.
Hi do you have same system pj bass?
Yep! Contact me on reverb with some pics ready and we can get you set up.
Always fun to see your new creations.
Cheers! Appreciated! 🙇🏻♂️
Resistor?
I don’t understand.
Sorry sir, what I meant was that you used resistors and capacitors, sir, if I may ask?
@@Playman311 sure! 250/500k pots and .047uF caps
There should be something like this for a Gibson SG Bass. The stock setup is not good. V V T. However, if you adjust the bridge or the neck pickup just a bit, it's like turning it off. It's much worse than what I hear in my Jazz Bass. The SG Bass has no nuance so I resort to playing it full on :(
Sounds like it has those J taper pots in there. Basically on off switches, right?
Yes. Why would Gibson do that?@@ticktockfool
@@jmasno5 cost savings? That’s where a lot of companies can save cash is in the electronics. Plus they figure most players crank everything to ten anyway so… that’s my guess.
How is this blender dual pot any different than using 2 separate volume pots to get a blend balance? Are you using Red color "liquid Electrical Tape" to dip the treble bleed components?
One knob. Faster blend. Yes. Dipped to prevent any shorts to ground. Tone cap just for looks.
@@ticktockfool you mentioned in the video that the Bourns pots has a different TAPER compared to the CTS pots taper. So what type of Taper to use for the Blender pot?
@@waynegram8907 the tapers are the same in regard to the blend knobs. Taper changes when you add a treble bleed to volume pot. The volume pot becomes halfway between linear and audio.
@@ticktockfool yes the treble bleed changes the taper and also alters the voicing of the pickups
Will this plate fit most non American made fenders? I have a chinder bass that plays great with new pickups in it now. Still has a dull sound with a bit less volume than my other bass with same pick ups.
It should fit. One guy told me that it was the tiniest bit off on his G&L due to his pickguard but, shouldn’t be a problem. I couldn’t tell you why your getting less output without seeing under the hood but, I bet that is where they are saving money wink wink
Sweet tone. What pups are in the bass?
Joe Barden Electronics
Some of us prefer the ability to "blend" the pixkups and not completely switch off one or the other. So instead of a switch. 2 V knobs or a volume knob, blend knob and tone. So this control plate gots to do something special😂
Wow, I really like this. Will be ordering one soon.
I installed this control plate on my Jazz Bass and it sounds really good. A+ quality soldering and he even put leads on the hot terminals to make soldering on my end easy. Included screws and shrink tube also.
demais!!!
how about shipping to Phillipines?
How about learning to spell Philippines? 😆
I plan to rewire a Tele this way but with a 5-way super switch.
Have you done this? I'm currently doing that to my Godin Session Custom S-S-S, with the standard pickup combos going to one control stack, an extra pickup going to the other stack, and a switch to separate their outputs with a stereo jack.
I'm leaving my Fender basses as they are. Thanks but..............no one needs a toggle switch on a bass and you lose myriad good tonal options doing this, especially for recording.
Hey I think I just found you on Reverb. I’m looking at a passive harness for my j bass. I forget the name of the model I’m gunna get but it’s the J plate with the S/P volume pot
Switch or blender pot?
Thanks for this video !!!
I did this along time ago on an old pj vm jaguar bass, only I had a barrel style out so I was ale to do dual volumes and a single cap still. Still a very good jazz bass sound and could instantly solo the p bass pickup. Doing it this way with a single volume plus the treble bleeds is pretty redundant. Bass players don't really use their volume as a tone shaper and also don't instantly select pickups as guitar players normally do. Idk just silly but hey I'm not kgonna knock anyone for getting their bag.
