Well the First World War was underway and there was a huge military presence here, but the Americans showed up without informing the Governor General. Edmond Morris, now deceased, a one-time Mayor of Halifax, compiled a list of dead, I think 1,982 souls, but these were people who lived in houses. If you died of your wounds months later you were not counted with the explosion dead. One account that I read said that bodies were floating in the harbour weeks after the event. Because the Mont Blanc was not sporting Explosives flags huge numbers of people rushed down to the harbour front to witness a remarkable fireworks display. I wasn't in Nova Scotia when it was decided to send Massechuetts a huge Christmas tree each year but it would be more appropriate to send it to New York.
