I initially wanted to go as small as possible, but still something big enough for EDC and for a weekend trip maybe. Ordered the 14L but send it back after a week. I found it a bit too little for a weekend trip bag. Unfortunately, I didn't realise you could open the day pack compartment down to the camera part. I don't carry much gear, so I could have used that additional space for what I needed. I'll probably order the 16L now... or thinking of trying the 14L again lol . How tall are you? just to get a feel for how big it is?

I’m 5’8”. There is a section in the vid where I talk about height and back length. About ½ way through I think. I think the 16 is perfect if you need to carry a bit of stuff - eg for me it’s a 400, 24-120, filters, Osmo etc. The 14 is perfect for a walk around pack for a day when you don’t need much. Basically you need both 😂

The main reason that a 50mm lens is so small on an old SLR is because the mirror-box takes up about 1/2 in from the back of the lens to the film plane. A modern mirror-less camera has no real need for the extra length. The lens designers use extra elements for superior optical corrections, but if you just stick the old lens on an adapter, then you see that extra length used by the adapter (which is mainly an empty tube) and you get the same picture you did on the SLR. If you take most 50mm lenses and measure from the front of the front glass element to the sensor plane (or film plane) the distance is probably going to be similar.

@siwphoto Yea I have a 50 for the Canon, I do love it. Just that the 5d mark ii is not the most street friendly camera 🤣 . I do also find that 40/50 is great for a cityscape, it allows to feature the subject while cutting out unwanted distracting buildings. If that makes sense 🤣🤣

Thanks for the reply Martin! Yep I think it’s probably a good idea to have at least ½ a plan. I’ll try it 😂 However also, it never ceases to amaze me that you can just go out for a random wander and still find okay images. Okay, often they’re not going to win any awards, but if you enjoy the process and are reasonably happy with the result, you’re winning I’d say 👌

Same here! I find that when I plan, it all goes pear-shaped anyway, but then sometimes I think maybe it's a good idea... especially when you're trying to shoot film footage as well. I may experiment!

I've started planning more and more over the last couple of years. I'm finding that it significantly increases the chances of getting better images. I still regularly go out without a clear plan, usually hiking with the wife, and let my successes (and failures) fuel my planning process.

I think I may give this planning malarkey a try! At least I can start a film without saying "hey guys... got no plan today"... for a change!

Hi Si, cracking debut I'd say. You followed me on Insta so I thought I'd have a quick gander and see what you're up to. Definitely some nice images in there under challenging conditions. I tried a first video last year, but it's yet to see the light of day. Greetings from sunny Bavaria and looking forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks loads for checking in and greetings to you and Bavaria! Hope you manage to get your video live one day too :) It's certainly a lot of effort, for little or no reward, but if you enjoy the process like I do, and the odd person gets something from it, it's a win.
