There are people who've had extreme depression and severe mental illnesses that have found lasting happiness and complete fulfillment. And in many cases they used meditation, a regular gratitude/appreciation practice, and selfless service to others as their most effective tools to experience happiness, fulfillment and much better health. In many cases it might be best to see a doctor if one has depression or a mental illness. As the medication doctors prescribe can sometimes be very helpful to many persons. Those 3 things are not the only things that are important to living a happy life but they are 3 of the most important things that unhappy persons overlook and very often dismiss - just like you dismissed them in your comment. A person USUALLY also needs to be eating, exercising and sleeping in a healthy way too. Happiness and health is a holistic endeavor. It is a lifestyle and requires consistent effort and a positive attitude. When we are in a horrible mental state or a horrible situation we can either hold unto our limiting beliefs about what is possible and "fight for our limitations" OR we can choose to consistently practice those things that will sooner or later lead us to experience lasting happiness and complete satisfaction/fulfillment. The choice is ALWAYS ours to make. Humans are not selfish by default. MANY people are extremely generous and giving with their time, energy and money. This is not the majority of people, but it is still a large number of persons. If the majority of people truly loved everyone then this world would be heaven for almost every person. But most persons are not yet sufficiently mature/evolved to do this. But there are still a large number of persons in the world who genuinely care about people and help them without wanting something in return. I personally know several persons like this. Perhaps you will choose at some point to be one of these persons and discover the joy and deep satisfaction that comes to those who help/serve others without wanting anything in return. And discover the joy that eventually comes from a regular meditation practice. I know you will experience permanent happiness and fulfillment after your physical body dies and you enter the Spirit World - the Afterlife - but I wish for you to experience this BEFORE your body dies. You now know 3 ways to do this. The choice is always yours to make. I wish you the best. Take care.
