Protein: The Questions with Dr Jeff Bland and Dr Jonny Bowden
Dr. Jeff Bland, President of Big Bold Health, and Dr. Jonny Bowden, our Healthy Aging Advisor, are both experts in human nutrition. Their careers span decades, and they’ve seen all of the nutrition trends come, go, and come back around again. After receiving hundreds of questions during Dr. Bland’s November webinar about the science of dietary protein, we knew the two of them were the perfect pair to take on the challenge of bringing quality information forward. Plant protein vs animal protein? What did our ancestors really eat? Branched chain amino acids? How much protein is enough protein (and does the stage of life matter)? There was A LOT to talk about in this live Wellness Wednesday Webinar.

Yes!! As a matter of fact, it’s very easy, but you have to be careful to not burn the buckwheat. Here’s a quick tutorial: Remove your turkey from the roasting pan to cutting board and allow it to rest. Depending on how much rendered fat you have in the roasting pan, you may want to remove some, but save it, as you may need to add it back. OFF heat, add 2 tablespoons of Big Bold Health (BBH) Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat (HTB) for every cup of liquid. So if you want to make 2 cups of gravy, you would add 4 tablespoons. Mix the HTB well with the rendered fat and drippings in your pan, and place over medium low heat, stirring constantly to ensure everything is well incorporated without burning the buckwheat. Add more of the rendered fat if necessary to ensure a roux texture similar to wet sand at low tide. Once everything has come together and heated up, increase heat to high and add your liquid, scraping the bottom of your roasting pan to get up all the delicious bits! Bring to the boil and cook on simmer for a few minutes to cook out the raw flavor of the roux. Adjust the liquid to achieve the desired consistency by reducing to thicken or adding liquid to thin the gravy. Once you’re happy with the consistency, taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Remove to a small sauce pot and cover with a lid to hold until ready to serve. Bon appetite!!!

Frequency and amount pf of protein ingestion? As a senior weight trainer I seem to best with one gram protein per pound of ideal body weight split up over twice a day. Just listen to my body? At 70yrs I am the oldest OG under the barbell at the Local YMCA. My references are Dr. Robert Wolfe for EAA and Dr. Don Layman for target amounts. EAA and Collagen Peptides as a supplement? Thanks for the Intel. 🏊🏋🏻🎉😊😊😊😊😊

I appreciate everything you've done to make my life easier to understand. I've been an Orthomolecular Nut for over 40 years and at 70 years young, I Thrive, I Wish we could all get our nourishment from the grocery store but we CAN'T. Even the "outer aisle" no longer is as good as it used to be thanks to companies like Monsanto that have POISONED the earth for MONEY! Grow a garden, use your grass and leaves to make compost and FEED the SOIL. God Bless you Jeff and all those who think like you :)

Nice broadcast about protein. I heard that the increase in co2 and warming will lead to starchier food crops, harvests with less protein and less fat. Our best foods come from a cooler, more temperate climate. Unfortunately, that is not the direction we are going in. Vote with science in mind.

I have enjoyed listening to this video although have to admit I haven’t totally understood it totally. I noticed the other commentators know a lot about chemical structures. I don’t really know things like that but I have been told that protein helps reduce inflammation. I have inflammation in my intestines. I can’t digest any flours even gluten free flours result in stomach ache the next day the same for beans so I need very easy to digest soluble plant fibre that will have proteins and vitamins and am trying to understand the big variety of lettuces that exist. Also does sheep cheese have more protein than hard cows cheese is there much lactose difference between hard cows cheese and hard sheep or goats cheese? I find it difficult to know how to control inflammation with my diet and I am allergic to the medicines offered but I know life style is important like stress management and sun light.

Have you reviewed studies on protein intake and brain health? One study shows 112 grams daily of protein resulted in a 12 fold increase in beta amyloid clearance compared to 56 grams, and much higher than 86 grams daily. You have done a great video, I’m hoping for a fantastic in-depth series on protein. No one has done it yet.

What about fructocation and Allulocation? What about the 600 amino acids present in plants which cannot be used for our biochemistry? Some are very similar to proteins we use, get incorporated into tissue and our immune system then attacks the tissue/organs. These are proteins that pass through a damaged gut lining ( caused by plant toxins). Many have been discovered but are kept secret for some unknown reasons. Maybe you could investigate and enlighten us? That would be great! Note that fructose and allulose have poor detection via current HbA1c and serum glucose tests and are about 7.7-11 times more “glycating” than glucose so this could be very important.

I once told Dr. Bland after one of his lectures that I'd been commuting with him for several years, meaning that I had been popping his monthly audio cassette into my car's stereo and driving to work listing to his "Functional Medicine update" series. When hearing my comment, he laughingly shook his head and said "I'm sorry to hear that". Ha ha. How I've missed your polysylabic mumbo jumbo, Dr. Bland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what the GLP1 receptor agonists facilitate them doing. If people could "just" do what you suggest, there wouldn't be an obesity epidemic. You clearly have no clue how some people struggle with the drive to eat. You are very fortunate not to struggle like some people do! Please attempt kindness and empathy for your fellow human beings and refrain from being ignorantly judgemental.

Great lecture, I learned a lot. I like the focus on lifestyle interventions. I'm sure we'll have a great many people who struggle when stopping these medications. There are already studies on how much of the weight loss is muscle mass while on the medication and that weight regain is rapid once people stop them. Fat is fast to regain, muscle is much slower. Why no mention of therapeutic nutritional ketonemia? From my research, it is highly efficacious at reversing obesity and type-2 diabetes. I stumbled upon it over 10 years ago and successfully reversed my T2D. I find it to be highly sustainable and have yet found zero reason to discontinue it.
