What even is Trauma Informed Yoga?
This term is used very liberally in the yoga verse, but what does it actually mean to claim this title?
In today's bonus podcast episode, I get into this, and so much more, with the amazing Grace Tempany.
A powerful Irish presence in our yin yoga global community, Grace Tempany is a Senior Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, a Trainer Pro and Mentor, specialised in yin, functional yoga, and trauma-informed somatic practices.
As a trainee psychotherapist, her lens is inherently person-centred. As a former secondary school teacher, the art of teaching has been her bedrock. Her teaching is built on the foundation of inclusion.
Since she started teaching yoga ten years ago, she has dedicated her practice, research and teaching to providing the most accessible space for everybody to practise being in their bodies, and learn to gain a deeper connection with themselves, their truth, their voice and their own unique and personal journey. She marries pedagogical expertise, lived and felt experience as knowledge, and the most up-to-date research from the yoga, education, and therapy worlds.
She created her own school of yoga because she believes in a deeper and more well-rounded yoga education. She knows that deep thinkers and old souls looking for retreats are yearning for more depth and integration opportunities. And she listened to to the soul whispers nudging her to create a home for many others out there who have yet to find theirs within the yoga community.
In 2023 ISFYT: The International School of Functional Yoga Teachers was born. In the making for at least the last 3 years, it will no doubt continue to evolve for many years to come.

My testosterone levels are higher but not out of the normal range, I had a sudden acne burst a year ago, it is better now. My ovaries are policystic. But other than acne here and there, and hair falling out, I do not have any other issues, and my glucose and insulin levels are good. My endo says I have PCO, not PCOS. What is your opinion?

Just a thought on why i seem to be prone to damp. I understand that gluten adds to damp in general. But for someone who is allergic to gluten, has celiac, and perhaps nutritional deficiencies bc of, in particular potassium, which along w sodium, controls water metabolism, is it possible that a potassium deficit is at the core of poor water metabolism and damp?

I've been doing cold showers every morning for like 6 years. I do it because it legitimately wakes me up quickly and makes me feel amazing everytime. However I wonder if this short shocking exposure creates dampness? Or is it a stimulus that only strengthens the strength of your fire? I find the idea that the body has limited energy, to be kind of depressing. Surely, like in weightlifting, if you give the body a short and hard stimulus and give it a lot of time to recover, this makes the body stronger over time? Anyways, I've also been eating 1kg of dairy every day, mainly using white rice and potatoes as go-to carb sources, eating often protein shakes with frozen berries AND peanut butter AND macadamia nuts... I think I could safely say 70% of my diet has been consistently dampening foods, even my beverages have always been either green tea or coffee with milk (I never drink it without milk). This works fine in the summer, and summer has always been my favorite season. But when autumn comes around I often collapse and have a lot of cold infections in a row. I struggle with clearing my throat always when I need to talk, and a foggy mind, very high anxiety usually, very bad acne on my body (but never on the face). Stool is good and well digested but whenever I eat any wheat products or anything unusual things get pretty loose. I think it's a clear cut case of excess dampness right? Can this also lead to a tendency towards colds? My girlfriend literally never gets colds meanwhile I get like 6 of them in a year sitting right next to her. She is from a warm country and her skin is always smooth and dry. I'm more nordic and I'm always sticky/sweaty/weird LOL

OMG....I can attribute the health issues I have had for several years to my dampness-inducing diet. I was heavy on sweet morning smoothies, citrus and cold fruits, nut butters for breakfast. Mostly everything I have been eating has contributed to an imbalanced spleen and body dampness. This video is very helpful. I've been making yogi tea (ginger, cardamon, clove and pepper) to warm up my digestion and have it in the morning as well as roasted dandelion root tea. There are several things I need to change ASAP! I have been warming up my oat milk for my smoothie but another Dr on UA-cam said to eat food, not drink it and banana is considered cold in TCM. I have to revamp my entire approach to food.

I'm sorry, but I think you may be swinging too far the other way - there is such a thing as excessive normalization. Let's not normalize true pathologies. Ankle dorsiflexion *is* innate to us, look at any newborn. Unfortunately our modern lifestyles have made us lose it as we age. It is becoming an increasingly rare skill that needs to be trained, whereas cultures that normalize the Asian squat rarely deal with this issue. I appreciate the spirit of "we are all special and unique", but there is also wisdom in ancient teachings that shouldn't be glossed over.
