Edit: spelling fixes Good thing I found this review piece. I was about to buy them... Getting good gloves for historical fencing is such a pain in the arse nowadays... I got the red dragon Dreadnaughts instead. Good protection but they need to have the rivets changed every now and then.
Girl vs girl
Some questions: 1. How would you modify these gloves to be a bit more protective in those areas of concern you've addressed. 2. What do you think about Purpleheart's version with leather covering the exposed areas? 3. Would you say these are at least decent for bolognese and sabre? That's what I'm on the lookout for mainly, and don't want to shell out double the money for a heavy glove I cannot even use because it won't fit in the guard of a sidesword or sabre.
1. Thicker and more resistant leather and/or padding 2. We have nevr tried anything by Purpleheart 3. Decent or synthetic simulacrums but some hits could be painful. Not advised for steel. For the last year we're been using the SupFen master gloves as general gloves for synthetic simulacrums and they've been working fine.
Sword and Rodela is so cool .I can imagine María de Estrada showing off some techniques to Tlaxcaltec and Texcocan homies in 1520/1521 .
Yes, sword and rotella is often a underestimated combo
What gloves are you two using?
Enrico's should be Fait d'armes, don't know about Luca's

@@saamfvg what's the point of sparring then?

@@saamfvg i mean to fight like if you wanted to kill the orher guy. Put some rubber or something on the blades and swing it to the other as if you wanted to murder him. With good armor and practice I think it is doable with minor injuries. Like, I understand why do it for fun, but if you want to recreate fighting, the most accurate is if it is swung the way it's meant to be. I wouldn't ask this with Jians for ex. while wearing a robe, where you might actually disembowel the other.. but with armor. You can serious.

Grazie mille! Loved the perfect representation & pronunciation.
Glad it was useful!
When Martina went more offensive with the storta, started giving some hits. When deffensive, got wasted. In my opinion.
Ho una domanda ma lo spadone quante è grande?
Quelli usati in questo video dovrebbero essere 140/145cm, il modello standard è una ventina di cm più lungo
@@saamfvg a ok

OOPS
nice chill sparring! :) quite cool swords and skillset you have. I never really appreciated how nice sideswords are.
They are very versatile!
What would you recommend for spada da lato or saber? I've found these guys bulky for my swords but suitably protective. I have taken a bad hit or two but I haven't found anything more protective that doesn't also make it impossible to hold my swords properly. These ones already struggle for me since I wwar Large size gloves
For synthetic or steel sowrd? For synth we're currently pretty satisfied with the SupFen master gloves, while for steel Thokk's turned out to be more protective than these, although just as bulky and more expensive.
This is the first time I see a storta trainer (synthetic or otherwise). Dumb question, but is there supposed to be a dedicated system for storta? I never thought about it, and now I don't know if it's me not paying attention, or if there is none. It's a short sword, so not sure side-swords systems cuts it. So, dussack? Messer? Somehow they seem more appropriate for storta (and hanger type swords).
As far as we know, no, there is system or manual for storta. Messer would be the closest to it and maybe you can adapt something from more recent cutlass manuals.
@@saamfvg Funny enough, out of curiosity, I was just browsing the Del Tin offer of swords. They are selling something listed as "Storta or Dussack". So they see it as being the same, and I can see why. But it's true that in HEMA, if we say dussack, we think Meyer. And you are probably right that (leaving Meyer's system to the side) all these shorter swords and hangers would have been used in the same simple way, just like a messer.
That was fun!👍
It was indeed, even if we had to limit chatter and banter for the sake of the video XD

Yes - no spear expert myself (assembling some spears for HEMA training now) but clear she is new to spear and he is probably quite an experienced HEMA - who knew he had to come in past the tip. My understanding is that a significant advantage of spear is its tip maneuverability - basic go thrust low then high repeat, and it is hard for any weapon to match. See the scholar gladitoria video on spear combat which shows even modest spearman seem to have a significant advantage over even better trained swordmen. The spear was the predominant weapon through history for a number good reasons - including its effectiveness. Liked the low impact spear design for training bamboo and pool noodle - suspect the bamboo is replaced frequently. Thanks for making the video it is good food for thought - look forward to more on spear!
Truth be told, it's not really easy to manouvre the spear and especially other pole weapons with bigger blades like the partisan. They can be unbalanced towards the blade and they're usually somewhat awkward to use. We tried the Blackfencer partisan blades on stiffer pole to be more historically correct, but they were too heavy and cumbersome for Martina to use.
Hi, i'm the guy with the dagger, yes i have more experience than her but still it was not easy: i had to think of a strategy beforehand and when i got really tired at around half of the video it was game over for me. Now i'm wondering if the same strategy works with someone taller, more aggressive and experienced.
@@saamfvg ussually the Spears have short blade or even no longer of 30 cm and this ia not a partisan obvious that with the partisan the fencer should be more trained, and yes Spears has no egual in the right hands, i didn't see the girl stepping aside orntaking distante in the moment that the opponent wants to get closer, as i didn't see her making multiple attacks and changing the attack zone....
@@biobomb93 I come from a koryu back ground, primarily pole arms, but some sword - control/work past the point and be aggressive once you enter like that is about the only strategy I've ever been taught. It gets more difficult the more experienced the spear, even with another pole arm. if she'd been more experienced she'd possibly have ran you around the court. I'd normally attack the lead hand first, but that's because it's closest and was traditionally a lightly armored/easily disabled target. Some food for thought for the spear user (again from a koryu perspective - which may or may not be applicable to your studies) - a cap/padding on the butt end can improve the balance a touch and be used for attack/defense, especially with a shorter weapon like that (step back left and bring it around for a head strike, for example). We generally let the spear pass through the front hand - there were a few times in there she took a step or two when it looked to me she was already in range for a solid hit if the spear had moved through the front hand. It also lets you use the hips as the main driver and not the rear shoulder. Is there something in the sources that recommends a static hand position on a spear? It seems common in HEMA spear clips I see, and is something we rarely do so, especially when staying in our range.
@@vasilemihaicuceu7809 This was literally her fourth time using any pole weapon ;) We currently don't own any spear tips, only a couple Blackfencer's partisans, so the choice was between those and the tennis-ball-and-tape-makeshift-thing that we ended up using.
Circle the tip and push. Dont keep it static. Dont give the opponent time to think. Use your distance to your advantage. Dont be afraid to give ground if its going to give you tac advantage, you have plenty of room.
Nahh, she cant the spear
I guess you meant "she can't use the spear" and you would be correct, it is quite obvious. In fact, that was her fourth time using it 😉
@@saamfvg its not always evident unless youve even watched the spears use by someone who knows how to use it competantly or skillfully for me that was initially.. martial arts movies(yes really) not that wushu is actual combat but it showcases the range of techniques and the use of sliding the spear in the hands for different contexts (true fact its how i first got the ideas when using spear in sparring albeit refined with more common sense footwork and such)
Dude this was sick, would definitely like to see more.
Eventually we'd like to do more
Very nice. Have you ever considerrd making a video on his double sword? Would be very cool to see (if you haven't already).
This kind of video takes a long time to make, we have a couple in the works but we don't know of and when we'll be able to make them...
I got them as a cheap alternative to hard polymer longsword gloves (I prefer five finger freedom to mittens, and in the HEMA world that comes at a price), and so far haven't been disappointed. Admittedly, they aren't of the _greatest_ quality, and the center hard shell could extend down to where the weak spot on the wrist is, but they are adequate, imo, for light to medium sparring if you're not trying to hand snipe. They're also at a decent mid range cost without having to buy clams, hooves, or $400 Gabriels...
Hand sniping is a core of the Bolognese school we study, so...
"entra?? Non penso proprio"
Ce crisi
Pretty harsh review... These gloves are one of the best 1H gloves on the market. Unperfect? Yes but they are as good as Thokks for half the price. What is better for saber or 1H at this time? Not much. Having 5 fingers mobility and perfect protection is something that will never exists. Can't have it all :( Been using these for more than a year now and never got any big injury. It does not matter if you can "feel" a hit. What matters is the protection against serious wounds. Do you have a pair of gloves for 1H that is better than this? Because i can see in a lot of your videos people using gloves even less protective like RD or Kevlar light gloves The only thing i could not try yet are the gloves from HF Armory ....
Those of us who use Thokk gloves said that the SupFen are less protective, not too much, but enough to be noticed at the first use. We don't study saber so we can't comment on that, but we've heard from more than one person that they are satisfied by the SupFen, which is good to know. Again, as already stated in the video, it's not like they don't ptoect at all, but they have significant flaws that could lead to injuries, especially when using steel blades. Talking about injuries, you say that you "never got any big injury", does it mean you actually got injuried using them?
@@saamfvg some hits did sting a little, if hitting some of the weakest spots indeed. Same with Thokks really, but you might be right in saying that Thokks can be slightly better at protection some parts. I can get on with that but it's not a huge difference No gloves on the market can protect you 100% from injury. What i like about these and Thokks is that the protection is "good enough", "nearly all the time" while preserving agility. I can't use a 1H sword without that agility. I can use my longsword with big bulky clamshell gloves like spes heavies, but i cannot do that with a saber or broadsword for exemple. At this time, i don't think it is possible to create gloves that will protect you 100% without impairing your ability to handly your weapon correctly (wrist movements for exemple..., and freedom to position your fingers correctly on the blade). For many years, everybody used Red Dragons because there was nothing better. Nowadays, we have much better options like Thokks and Supfen impact gloves. I think it will be many years before we get something better.
Yes, unfortunately it does seem we are still quite some time away from THE gloves...
They made an addon that they sell with the sf impact resistant glove that fits any glove appearently. It seems like it covers the spots that the glove itself doesn't, so im concidering these for sabre. They seem more dexterous than spes heavies because of the split fingers, but more protective than the red dragons im currently using.
If you do end up getting them, let us know your thoughts once you've had the chance to use them
SPES HEAVIES are entirely different type of gloves. Can't use a saber decently with SH for exemple. So yeah, you have to trade some protection for agility. There is no way around that. ATM , with all these flaws, SupFen gloves and Thokks are still the best gloves on the market for some weapons in my opinion. I would gladly buy something better, but from what i have seen, there is nothing better
Ive yet to see the addon in real life... I''m curious but a bit skeptical about it. It ressembles the old hand of glory gloves that was sold years ago and is still on the website. If i remember well, it wasnt that great.
I use them for my off hand in single rapier if I plan on aggressive hand parries. They seem quite good for that. Of course, rapier is the most polite sword to get cut on the hand by.
Rapier seems to be what they are most suited for
Excellent! Please make more.
Thanks, we will!
Nice fencing. Does it feel weird to have to fight at such a close range with the shorter weapons? Was the hip-hinge forward intentional or just a result of the shorter weapons and feeling the need to push reach? Who made those storta? The guards/hilts are very nice looking. Thanks for the video
All the synthetic simulacrums we use are from Blackfencer. Us being used to sideswords, yes, it does feel a bit odd to fence with shorter weapons, but you get used to it rather quickly.
C'è crisi
The bard should really have to sing, or chant, or play the cittern with one hand while fencing.
Hi! Any update on these?
Hi, we're working on the second part, but long story short they're... lacking. They are almost good for synthetics, but not protective enough for steel.
The raperist needs to focus on the fact it is a rapier not a sidesword. Point attacks, range, small movements. Cuts are almost always a secondary intent
Neither of them is trained in rapier, so yeah, they do use it like what they're more used to.
the videos are nice but the intro is wayyyy to loud :) cheers
Thanks for the review! Now I understand, that these are made for nylon, not for steel.

That was very fun!! i wonder if you could simulate an axe (the Berserker signature weapon) with adding some padding on the end of an already padded stick.
Weapons like maces and axes are inherently dangerous, so we avoid them.
