    For anyone trying to repair a power supply issue, I recently did 2 and both were the SMPS failing to start up. The cause was a faulty electrolytic capacitor that provides inital power to the L6599AD SMPS controller. The capacitor is located in between the MOSFETs and HVDC capacitors on the top side of the board (usually under glue), C83 on the schematic. It's a 10uF cap on the schematic but 100uF 16v 105DegC was installed on my board. Replaced it with a 100uF or greater 16v 105DegC capacitor and it powered straight up. 50 cent fix!

    Buzz Feiten uses their pickups exclusively. His neck pup in super warm yet clear. If you want to open up the sound of that guitar, I suggest a Dimarzio Norton - DP 160 which was originally designed to extend the tonal range and power of standard output humbuckers without going over the top. It's more modern than a PAF sound: the benchmark Gibson Les Paul/Marshall combination yields more midrange crunch and high frequency pick harmonics than vintage-style pickups were capable of putting out. Norton is really good for opening up the sound of mahogany set-neck guitars. Reb Beach used it on Dokken's live from the sun and I believe it was in Neal Schon's PRS for several years. The harmonics are insane. If you really want to blow the doors off the house - try the Leslie West Humbucker from Dean.

    Thanks for running through this. Would like to know if there was a discernible difference in tone/headroom. As far as hum, that just where the second gain stage kicks in. By lowering the bias, you may have lowered the gain so turning it up gives you the same volume and crunch at a different spot on the dial. But ears are the final judge... I plan to check my DSL 20 now that I've seen you do it. Always thought these adjusted themselves, but as you demonstrated, they can get out of whack and need to be reset.

    • @Garriuw

      For what I've read from EVH website Frankenstein Pickup do not match Fender and Floyd bridge spacing. Generally for Fender and Floyd you need 52,6mm pickup (DiMarzio call it F-space and Seymour Duncan call it Trembucker) against the 49mm. Otherwise Wolfgang Bridge pickup has the correct string spacing for Floyd or Fender bridge. Consider also that Frankie pickup is very loud. I believes that is the reason why there is not much gain drop in low and high E string.

    These are both very solid pickups, but I prefer the JB. I find it has the right blend of brightness and smoothness. I think the EVH is just a bit too spiky. I've been using JBs since 1986, when I got Kramer Baretta in which the JB came stock. I've owned a lot of pickups but always gravitate back to the JB. It just works so well with every genre and playing style. It's a pickup that's grown with me through all the years.

    Great advice. I never attempt to adjust.action because I don't have the guitar string height measuring tool. When I take in my Les Paul for a set up and have it restrung I end up paying 6-10 bucks for strings as I usually buy them in bulk and get the cost pretty low. Then I end up paying $100 for a truss rod adjustment and the tune-o-matic bridge adjustment (which is obviously far less labor intensive than the saddle adjustment on a strat style bridge. Don't get me wrong, it always plays great but I believe that within a handful of adjustments it is something I can accomplish in 15 -25 minutes. I just can't just the $300 when I bring in my SG and 2 Les Paul's every 3-4 months

    i own the frankenstein and the 78 model. The 78 model cleans better and has more grain when you push the distortion. I think if you are looking for something nasty but which cleans well the 78 model is better than the frankenstein. The 78 model is almost a copy of the es-335 paf that was in the black and white frankie. The only difference is that it was short alnico V instead of long alnico 2 : Seymour duncan can't sell the exact real deal unfortunately.

    • @patrickwilliams2530
      @patrickwilliams2530 11 місяців тому

      @@ruggie.74 well when Seymour began to sell the 78 model they called it the Duncan custom and Eddie gave a phone call to Seymour Duncan telling him to stop or he would come with the lawyers and a lawsuit. Seymour knew he couldn’t sell the exact same thing so he just made a variant which sounds close. The magnet isn’t the same as the original and the construction of the pickup too. The 78 model is the closest copy of the humbucker which was in the Frankie in the 78 album. When Eddie began to use the Floyd rose he changed the humbucker and used what fender calls the Frankenstein humbucker. It was used for fair warning and women and children first.

    I think they put as much expense as possible into the rest of the guitar and “cut cost” on the pickups given pickups are often changed. I just got a new S2 McCarty 594 singlecut for $1400 from the CME. Given all the hardware is the same as the core and the main difference is the wiring and pickups and thickness of the top of which I prefer the carve of the S2, I don’t mind changing that for 1/3 the price (1400 vs 4700 for a core). Also consider PRS sells their pickups for $500 which is 25% the list price of a S2. Is it a “bummer”, I guess, but maybe I’m just not phased by it because I went into it eyes wide open

    You did a great job, Tom! I really like that you A/B'd the pickups clean in all pickup combinations.
